30th July 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last week saw a massive high tide on the Mersey which appears to be responsible for the sudden upturn in sport on the river, looks like some of the fish lost to below the weir after de-watering episodes early in the year have been able to return upstream. Judging by the match results from Sunday Jeff Shaw had top weight of 10-9-0 and his Dad Jim had the lowest weight of 6lb 6oz over 60lb of fish were caught. According to match organiser Bob Campbell there were some good roach and quantities of dace caught and if they can just be allowed to stay in the fishery the dace fishing next winter will be second to none!

The Dane has also benefited from the rain showers and thrown up some decent catches the most notable reported by Ron the bailiff were to Dave Jones who had eleven chub the best 4lb and some nice grayling all on caster and Steve Hammond who had several chub best was 4.5lb.

Last week saw the removal of the final blot on the landscape at Ackers pit when the pile of mud and silt near the outfall was removed to make the bank side more uniform to accommodate three more purpose built pegs. The bonus for members fishing while the work was being done was that the water colored up and catches improved significantly!  There is more bulb and wildflower planting scheduled for around the perimeter of the Ackers site planned for early September thanks to a Green Machine grant which we have been  lucky enough to secure

Rixton Clay pits has been producing some quality tench catches the best specimens in the last couple of weeks weighed in at 9lb 11ozs and 8lb respectively. A lot of tench are caught on boilies by the carp anglers, who almost as a matter of course keep their carp catches a big secret, will occasionally disclose a bit of tench info!  There are other members using a variety of baits and catching well bailiff Peter Copsey recommends luncheon meat to visiting anglers as it almost always scores however he says maggot and pellet also work well. There are some work days being planned to improve and repair damaged pegs so some areas may be closed off from time to time while the work is done.

It is really great to see how well our very newest anglers are developing and enjoying their new sport in this year's intake of minnows. It must be said all thanks to the commitment of coaches and volunteers alike who turn out every Tuesday night, pass on their knowledge and the tips and skills learned in some cases over decades, in a bid to set these youngsters on a path to a lifetime of angling achievement and pleasure.

Last weeks winner Ryan Brown had a lovely all perch catch. One of the youngest at only six year old Luke Chambers fished bread punch a new method to him. Although at times he struggled keeping the bread on the hook he persevered and put 2lb of gudgeon and roach in his net, despite only fishing close in on the near shelf. In fact the first eight all had over a pound of fish.

21st July 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

This has been a funny sort of a week so far the weather has been from the sublime to the ridiculous one minute a deluge the next the sun `cracking the flags' as they say. The fishing has been the same we have had a couple of reports which are phenomenal but we are sworn to secrecy  for the moment to lots of snippets from many waters, odd carp from Grey Mist and Rixton best from the `Mist' 25lb and an 18lb mirror to one of our younger members.

A fair few tench catches from the usual venues Rixton, Cecily Mill and High Legh. The rivers are still not performing to their potential especially the Mersey although there have been some reports of good roach catches from the Dee and Worthenbury Brook. Chris Edwards had some good roach and chub sport with a couple of small barbel nothing massive but a good day pleasure fishing all the same. Martin Cunliffe had some nice chub from the Wyre between 4.5lb to the best at 6.5lb last week all on luncheon meat and to carry on from last weeks theme an eel which measured from nose to tip which was four foot long!

Thankfully the weather was kind  for the final match on Monday in the Woodshaw junior series in which brothers Shaun and Liam Gaskell with 47 and  40 points respectively  took first and second places overall with Josh Kinley in third place on 37 points.

Our dedicated bailiff team headed up by Trevor Gray and Barry Walsh not only keep the Wigan waters up to scratch but still find time to encourage local junior anglers by staging this series of  eight matches  through June and July. They round it off with prizes and trophies for the winners and a BBQ for all the competitors and parents the sun shone and a good night was had by all thanks to all concerned.

On the same vein next Tuesday evening to coincide with National Fishing Week we would like to invite any children who want to have a go at fishing and have never fished before to come along to our regular Minnows session at Euclid Avenue in Grappenhall. Numbers we can accommodated are  limited by equipment available so please book in advance with Helen Dagnall at Cheshire Angling on 01925 635486 to avoid disappointment.

Wide Hole at Poynton has been fishing quite well with a member Michael Burdock reporting he has had excellent pike catches throughout last winter and recently good bream to 3.5lb on feeder with maggot or worn on the hook, plenty of small roach and perch and a he witnessed another member have a nice mirror carp of about 25lbs. It's well worth a visit although crayfish can be a nuisance sometimes in the summer the added bonus is he has also volunteered to take on bailiffing the water because he was disgusted after he cleared up six bags of rubbish last weekend left obviously behind by picnickers and poachers.

On a more serious note this week we have had incidents of poaching on the opposite bank to ours on the Ribble reported to the EA by one of our members. Someone helping himself to fish from Statham Pool which again was quickly reported by a member and our bailiffs were able to attend, advise the individual this was not allowed and return the fish to the pool.
