24th February, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Carp are starting to feed at Grey Mist Mere with a few fish coming out over this past weekend. However surprisingly it is the tench that are providing the best sport with one angler catching thirteen ranging from 4 to 8lbs on boilies. This fishery holds tench to over twelve pounds which understandably grow fat on the high protein baits intended for their larger cousins.

The River Alyn has produced some good catches of small grayling and chub this past week to maggot and small stick float method. The Dee looked perfect as I drove over it on Sunday and most catches reported include a few dace and small grayling. Ian Rother bucked the trend with nine chub ranging from 1.5lbs to 3lbs taken on double maggot and feeder at Worthenbury.

The dynamic duo, Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham never cease to amaze, especially as their combined ages exceed the years WAA has been in existence. They fish our waters every week without fail and are a cracking advert for our club. Their latest venue was Worthington Lakes where Dickie opted for a groundbait feeder and maggot approach whereas his partner predictably chose the waggler and loose-fed maggots. On this occasion both methods scored equally resulting in good nets of quality roach.

After March 14th the two lakes (Arley and Adlington) furthest from our car park close until June 16th with only the little fished Worthington remaining open throughout. Perhaps this neglected large expanse of water may throw up a few surprises as being the lowest of the three reservoirs fish are bound to 'filter' through the system. It was evidently stocked with barbel in the past so who knows? Reports please.

The match scene has seen some vastly differing results over the past week with the national squad fund event on the Macclesfield Canal scoring the best. The winner Kev Green had a good net of roach taken on bread punch for 4-14-0 and only a couple of ounces separated the first three anglers with other backing weights over 4lbs. If you fancy your chances on this venue it's on again this Sunday (see Coming Events for details).

17th February Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

What is it they say about Friday 13th being unlucky? Well it wasn't such a bad day for Warrington Anglers members as it saw thirteen common carp released into small Sandiway so continuing our ongoing stocking regime. The health certified fish were lower doubles supplied by Quiet Sports Fisheries. All were in pristine condition and apart from two which will be very easily identifiable in the future they were like peas in a pod. Once stocked into their new icy cold home and after acclimatization after their long journey in the nice warm insulated transportation tank they slowly glided towards the weedy depths.

So far the growth rates of previous stockings in the small lake has been very impressive, however more feedback from members is essential. We don't need to publicize your catches but we do need the information to provide continuous monitoring. The future is in your hands! Thanks to Steve Cannell who just happened to be fishing on the large lake at the time for helping me release the fish. Steve also doubled as official photographer and surely can't be any worse than my wife! We're awaiting the pics.

The 'Dynamic duo' Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham have been out and about again despite Dickie's recent ducking in the Trent & Mersey. Last Wednesday saw them on the Bridgewater canal at Lymm both settled on adjacent pegs and proceeded to fish.

The result Dickie had 10lb plus of quality skimmers, Ernie blanked with not even a bite. It is apparently the first time in twelve years that Dickie has beaten him! Rumor has it that Ernie is devastated and some say has lost the will to live….. But joking apart they will certainly be providing us with more entertainment soon, and it just shows how tightly shoaled up the fish can be at this time of year.

We received a report last week of a minor fish kill on the Trent & Mersey Canal which involved a few hundred small roach. It is unlikely that the localized 'pollution' will be found on this occasion but at least it flags up the locality if by any chance there is any repeat. Many thanks to the members who reacted immediately by informing ourselves and the Environment Agency. It is always important that the person who is witness to such an incident talks to the Agency direct.
