8th March 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th March 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett has rekindled his interest in Rixton Claypits where a fortnight ago despite watching a motionless tip for 2.5hours he eventually had the first tentative nibble, the sort where you think it is a figment of your imagination, but the result was a decent bream. Seven others followed, most around the 3lbs mark, probably over 25lbs total. Method was cage feeder packed with damp micros and corn or Pepperami on the hook.

Stuart Peters decided last Wednesday was probably his last chance before the end of the season to travel to one of the big rivers and with the Ribble having recently had a flush of water through it decided it was time for a crack at 'heart attack hill.' Tactics were simple, maggot feeder with bunches of live and artificial on the hook. By mid-afternoon at the end of his session he finished up with six chub to just under 5lbs, a brace of barbel to 7lbs, plus a couple of roach. As he commented, "An enjoyable session on a cracking venue."

Last Thursday morning after three day sessions on the bounce Daniel Donlan was more than happy when he landed his first Appleton Reservoir carp. Double pop-up corn and PVA pellet bag with attractor was the successful method.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished this week at Mersey Walk end of the river and although there were no mega-weights everyone caught with the exception of one, but no name no pack-drill😊 Organiser Jimmy Byrne was the winner from peg 58 with 3-9-0 made up of thirty small roach caught on groundbait feeder and white maggot. Roy Everson in second place took advantage of his end peg 56 draw and only just missed out on the top money by a few ounces with 3-7-0. Thirteen anglers fished.

Our weekly Disabled & Over 60's Match on Monday had a change of venue to the Stage Lane end of the Bridgewater where as it turned out if you were not on the bream there was no way you could win. Jeff Stoll drew near Oughtrington Bridge and fishing pole and bread punch tactics he landed two decent bream to which he added a tiny roach for good measure sending the scales round to a winning weight of 6-1-0. Ron Durr took second place from the next peg where he also managed a bream plus roach for 4-14-0. Fourteen anglers fished. It was nice to see octogenarian WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks back on the bank where he took a section win with a single perch but was more than pleased to beat the 'younger' anglers. Keep going Geoff, I'll be joining the 'over the hill mob' soon.

1st March 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st March 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sometimes it takes a youngster to show that if anglers get it right fish are there for the catching even in such atrocious weather conditions as on last Thursday when it seems they had four seasons in one day. Cameron Daly aged 9years who normally prefers to fish for pike was persuaded by his dad Ste to try his hand at tench fishing on Grey Mist. Set-up with a maggot feeder using three red maggots on a size 14s hook he fished four rod lengths out and only ended up breaking his PB three times! Cameron caught tincas of 6-3-0, 6-5-0, 6-9-0, plus two further fish of 5-11-0, and 5-14-0. As for Ste, on the day he was demoted to 'camera kid,' tea-boy, and using his words, 'netting Noddy'.

Steve Wright fished a session at Appleton Reservoir on Saturday kicking off at 10-40am after setting up with a cage feeder and double maggot at 30metres and also baiting up another swim at 50metres. After a while and no action, he switched to the furthest one where he got his first indication of a bite on double red maggot. A change to a maggot feeder filled with a little groundbait, maggot, and caster saw him soon slip his landing net under his first fish, a cracking 1.5lbs roach. More bites followed as the fish moved in on the feed and Steve ended up with a further dozen roach between 6 and 10oz and a 1lb roach to end the session.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was back on this week but the river was still carrying a fair amount of floodwater making bites few and far between. John Ashwin fished a feeder and white maggot for a perch and roach catch for a winning weight of 2-1-0. Ray Boden fishing the same method was the runner-up with 1-5-0 of small roach. Thirteen fished.

Monday saw our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Moore with members taking part being hopeful of a few more fish than previous weeks. Winner Stu Patterson drew the Tramps Grave peg which produced a bonus 1.5lb perch along with a few roach for a weight of 1-13-0. Second placed George Barber aka 'The Breadman' caught a few roach caught on the white stuff for 1-3-0. Fourteen anglers fished.

HALTON PLANNING OBJECTION:  We have had several previous attempts (once by Halton Borough Council in 2002 and lately a second attempt by developers to take away our use by Warrington Anglers Association members of Red Brow Lane that gives the only reasonable access to fish the Bridgewater Canal which we have leased and enjoyed for decades.

Members are advised to avoid fishing the Weaver Navigation on Saturday 5th March 2022 as Runcorn Rowing Club are holding their Spring Eights Head competition event.

Working Parties: - Rixton Claypits on Sunday 6th March 9am start. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours to help with further peg improvements are more than welcome.
