Easily the most interesting catch report this week came from Grey Mist Mere where Paul Knowles (still in shock) landed Houdini at a weight of 29-5-0. The fish didn't fall for any well-known or homemade carp baits, not even from a baited-up swim, but simply it beat a resident pike to take a lure meant for this toothy predator. On Pauls arrival at his peg, he spotted a pike that he had disturbed heading slowly out from the bank and cast his Savage Gear self4play 9cms rudd pattern lure towards the fish; as it sank out of sight the line tightened and his rod arched…fish on. He soon realised it definitely wasn't the pike and half an hour later the biggest carp and in fact his biggest fish ever lay in his landing net. Nice one Paul.

The Environment Agency Fisheries has been out again on the Trent & Mersey Canal today (Tuesday) for another session with aeration equipment in an effort to combat the pollution which is slowly flowing down the waterway from the direction of Northwich. They have to date saved thousands of fish and everything crossed that this pollution will be beaten. Thanks guys. Even better if the person responsible is eventually found and gets their just deserts!

Eric Simms reports a short but productive morning session on Arley Reservoir where fishing an open-ended feeder and double red maggot he soon landed a couple of roach but then the bream moved in and he ended up with twelve fish, the best around the 3lb mark. All in three hours.

The annual VS carp stocking took place last Thursday morning where Moore Quarry received seven fish, all over 19lbs with the best 20lbs on the button. Small Sandiway were desperate for a common so were well pleased with the C6 fished which weighed in at 21-4-0 plus a mirror for company. Big Sandiway received a boost stocking of sixteen fish, eight of which were over 22lbs and the biggest at 24lbs. Thanks to the small but dedicated band of volunteers who turned up and got the job done without a hitch.

Jimmy Byrne was the winner of this week's Sunday Mersey Match Series fished on the Victoria Park stretch. He drew peg 26 and fished a groundbait feeder and maggot at around 15metres to kick-off with a decent skimmer around the pound mark followed by perch and roach in the 6 to 14oz range for an overall weight of 7-11-0. Alan Morris was the runner-up fishing the same method from peg 34 with 3-13-0 made up of a brace of skimmers plus roach and perch. Sixteen anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match this week was at our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery and saw local rod Alan Birchall the winner with 7-12-0. He fished pole throughout with maggot and caster ending up with a bonus 2lbs bream, plus skimmers, roach, and perch. Jimmy Byrne took second place with a weight of 6-15-0 which included a 1.5lb bream and eight skimmers on the tip and single maggot. A change to the pole added a few roach and perch. Seventeen fished.

The annual carp stocking with V S Fisheries C6 fish takes place on Thursday 4^th November 2021 starting 10am to 10-30am at Moore Quarry after which to Sandiway Lakes. Members welcome as always.

Scott Broadhurst and his mate fished Wide Hole for the first time on Sunday but were not put off by the relentless heavy rainy conditions. They managed a load of nice roach, perch, and a clonking bream easily 6lbs. Whilst trying to show off his catch Scott slipped and ended up in the water accompanied by his fish which amused his friend and a fellow angler. Still a great day in the worst weather conditions.

Andy Corr enjoyed another session on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall on Sunday catching loads of roach on bread punch.  A bit further up the canal Billy Sanders fishing in Lymm village was targeting predators and ended up with five perch to just over a pound on small Berkley lures.

Mike Pritchard fished his weekly Saturday angling escape on the Mersey last weekend, setting up on peg 8 along Kingsway allotments. The river level was high but he still ended up with nineteen roach to 14ozs plus a solitary perch fishing a waggler close in and alternating between double flouro-pinkie and bronze maggot and pinkie.

Phill Dawson fished the Alyn on Friday for the first time hoping to catch his first ever grayling but cut his visit short due to the weather. Undeterred he was back the river the following day with his dad and was rewarded with two of these beautiful fish often referred to as the lady of the stream. Dad managed only one but it was the biggest. Enjoyable session in picturesque surroundings.

Dave Saunders spent a few hours on the River Vyrnwy at Llansantffraid on Wednesday afternoon enjoying a session lure fishing before the rain came and water levels became too high to fish. He only managed a couple of fish, a pike on the second cast around 6-7lb and then right at the end as the light was fading, a corking wild brownie which was promptly returned. Both fell to a small 5cm Salmo minnow trout lure.

Nick Burrows was the winner of this week's Sunday Mersey Match Series fished on the Mersey Walk stretch from peg 71. He fished a whip to start off with some chunky roach to which he added a decent sized skimmer and a bonus bream of around 4lbs for an overall weight of 8-3-0. Pete Jones was the runner-up with 5-6-0 made up of roach and like the winner added an essential bonus 4lb bream. The river was understandable running through due to the heavy rain which saw some anglers really struggling for bites. Fifteen anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match this week was on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road saw a low attendance due to the monsoon conditions. But things got even worse when most anglers reported not having any sign of a bite seeing a few fish on the surface gasping for breath with the odd dead one floating by it soon became apparent that something was seriously wrong and the match was abandoned. It turned out that there had been a pollution incident resulting in a fish kill in the marina at Billinge with dissolved oxygen levels down to 3%.

There is another working party at Cicily Mill tomorrow, Wednesday 3^rd November 2021, 9am start. Thanks in advance to all who attend.

There is a working party on Saturday 6^th November 2021 at Sandiway small lake starting at 9am. Also, the Beech peg will be closed for improvement work on Saturday so any member fishing there overnight Friday will need to vacate by 8-30am. All volunteers more than welcome.
