8th September 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th September 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Dave Connor reported an enjoyable Wednesday session on The Mount where on his first visit he fished the pole alternating between double red maggot and caster for a cracking catch of over thirty roach to around a pound plus a tench. He played a carp for ages but just when he thought he was winning the fish had other ideas and snapped him.

Our Wigan bailiff team report that Mowpin despite being a small fishery is producing single figure carp, crucians, and small rudd. Local angler Chris Roberts can personally back this up as on Thursday he fished pole and maggot for five carp, best around 6lbs, a crucian, plus plenty of small rudd. Although on this fishery youngsters need to be a member accompanied by an adult member from the same household, they can take one aged 12 years or under to our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery on a one to one basis for free. Sport there may be a bit patchy at present but roach and skimmers usually oblige.

Mike Pritchard went for his usual Saturday session on the Mersey, setting up on peg 6 where he initially struggled with only a few roach and perch so he moved down a couple of pegs and started catching immediately. The river was carrying a tinge of colour and he fished waggler close in alternating between maggot and caster to end up with over thirty roach and perch plus a skimmer.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was drawn this week at Victoria Park and fished downstream of peg 34. Local rod Jimmy Byrne who is rarely out of the prizes was the winner with 8-13-0 of roach and perch. He started on bolo loose-feeding maggot but after an hour and a half bites slowed and a change to the tip and groundbait feeder saw him start catching again. He added a bonus skimmer of 1.5lbs and more roach and perch and a late change back to bolo brought a few more and fifty plus fish overall. Second placed Ray Boden had the same mix of fish, a few on the pole, but caught his fish mainly on the feeder and maggot for a weight of 6-3-0.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match on the Trent & Mersey Canal saw local angler Rod Fraser the winner with 6-2-0 of roach and perch plus a solitary skimmer taken on pole and maggot. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up and not too far behind the winner with a similar catch taken on maggot or caster for a weight of 5-14-14. Seventeen anglers fished.

1st September 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st September 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Ben Haughton aged 12years has been a member a few months and his catches so far only included tench and bream despite targeting carp which had eluded him. This Bank Holiday however whilst fishing at Grey Mist with his dad Darren his luck changed when using Sticky Baits krill boilies, he struck into a fish that when it started taking line, he knew without doubt was his target species. The fish fought hard but with some encouragement from his dad and an aching arm he landed his first ever carp which sent the scales round to 20-4-0. When the fish was finally in the net Ben was shaking with excitement and will never ever forget this catch and neither will his dad because it also smashed his own PB. I understand that parental envy was only momentary😊   A round of applause from the member fishing opposite also added to the occasion. Well done Ben….this is just the start.

Working party volunteer Terry Stringer went out for a well-earned days fishing on Wednesday choosing the Weaver Navigation as his chosen venue. However, on arrival he spent the best part of an hour before setting-up making room in his car for the tent and associated rubbish left by morons who aside from poaching had no regard whatsoever for the countryside. Terry was later justly rewarded with a catch of roach, perch, skimmers, gudgeon, and rudd. Nothing big but nice fish and plenty of them on float fished maggots. Thanks Terry.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished this week at Mersey Walk upstream of peg 45 and saw some divine intervention from the Angel of Prosperity for Jim Gannon who was the clear winner with 10-8-0. Jim fished a ground-bait feeder and maggot for his catch of skimmers and small roach and included a bonus 5lbs bream in the last 5 minutes of the match. It was a Jimmy's week as it turned out with Mr Byrne taking second place with 7-13-0. Twenty-three anglers turned out but bites were definitely down on previous weeks and there were a few DNW's (did not weigh's).

Bank Holiday Monday saw our Disabled & Over 60's match held this week on our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery where plenty of room was left for other members not taking part.  This week saw a tie for first place between Ron Durr and Jimmy Byrne when they both put 10-6-12 on the scales. They both included a decent crucian each with the remainder made up of roach and skimmers taken on pole and maggot. Third placed Ray Boden was only a skimmer light from an outright win with 10-2-8.
