10th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sadly, I report the recent death on the 30^th August 2019 of former committee member Geoff Gauton who aside for being a keen volunteer on our working parties also held the post of head bailiff for a good number of years. His last big job for WAA was to replace our signs on all Bridgewater Canal Bridges using his pike fishing boat which he also used to patrol the canal. Geoff was also a well-known pike angler and an active member of the Pike Anglers Club. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife and family. His celebration of life is to be held at Warrington Crematorium at 1pm on the 18th September 2019.  

Mersey maestro Jim Gannon rang me on Friday absolutely buzzing following a cracking catch from the Weaver Navigation where the previous day he had dragged himself away from his favourite river and made his first visit to this fishery. Fishing a waggler set-up and maggot he enjoyed a fish almost every cast which included roach, bream, skimmers, chub, and rudd.

Mike Morton enjoyed a session at Wide Hole and was so impressed with the bream sport that after chatting to Dave Frangleton our local bailiff Mike kindly offered to help him in cutting back and opening up some new pegs. Worth a trip to this Association owned fishery as the fishing can be great as the fish move in from the canal for sanctuary.

Similarly, Dave Smith made his first visit the Dee on Tuesday and despite describing the track 'an adventure' certainly soon forgot this minor difficulty when he caught five grayling, loads of small chub, and several larger ones.

Following the recent pollution and subsequent fish mortality at Statham Pool it is heartening to hear that on Sunday Ian Kennedy caught two carp, a common and a mirror and lost two further fish. More reports please.

Both Saturday and Sunday Members Mersey matches are back on this weekend where the Saturday one really needs more anglers to take part for the organiser to continue running them. See draw details in coming events below. Thanks to Peel Ports for the care they took in dropping the river level to enable the removal of debris from the weir control gates caused by vandals.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was held at the Bridgewater Canal on the Daresbury Laboratories stretch where in form Rod Fraser who drew an end peg repeated his success of the previous week with a catch of caster caught roach and perch for a weight of 4-3-12. Alan Brown who also drew an end peg took second place with a net of smaller fish alternating between bread-punch and pinkie for 3-7-0. Sixteen fished.

Many thanks to the dedicated groups of member volunteers who attended working parties at Sandiway Lakes last Saturday. More are on the cards so watch this space.

Sadly, I report the death of longstanding member and well-known local angler John Dagnall who after a very brief stay in hospital passed away on Friday. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. Johns funeral will be held at Warrington Crematorium, Walton 12-20pm Tuesday 24^th September 2019.

On Saturday Alan and Angeline Oates waded a good distance down the Alyn from Rossett Bridge section using nymphs (olives and red tags) and later in the day dry flies, only trout on this trip, but some lovely sections of water covered. Earlier in the week Kevin Oates had fished the lower section with maggots and had some decent sized grayling. 

Following the recent pollution and subsequent fish mortality at Statham Pool it is now open to members again and I would really appreciate any detailed catch reports. Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time.

This weekends Mersey matches have been cancelled due to essential work required on Howley Weir to clear debris in control gates caused by mindless vandals. I have been in touch with Peel Ports who will be starting to lower the river level as slowly as practicable on Friday as they have to finish the job before Friday 13^th September 2019.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished again at Kingsway Allotments saw match organiser Ray Boden clock up his third successive win on his favourite pole and maggot method. His net of roach and perch that sent the scales needle round to 5-6-0 was way down on his previous weights. Pete Jones was in second place with 4-10-0.

Sundays Mersey match fished at Mersey Walk ended up as an individual event which was won by Neil Buist with a weight of 11-8-0 made up of a bonus 3lb bream plus skimmers taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Ray Boden took the runner-up spot with 10-14-0 of perch and roach caught on pole and maggot.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was held at the Trent & Mersey Canal, Billinge where local angler Rod Fraser who drew the wide enjoyed a comfortable win with a net of silver bream and roach for 7-2-8. He fished pole and caster. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with a catch of roach, perch, and gudgeon for a weight of 4-13-8. There were a good number of weights in the 3lbs plus range helped no doubt by the increasing numbers of gudgeon that have made a comeback this year.

Please note that there is a working party at Sandiway Lakes on Saturday 7^th September on both fisheries. Carl Wallace is running the one on the small lake meet around 10am on the first car park. Carl will be there all day for general tidying up, trimming, mowing, strimming etc. Anyone got any gear please bring it with them. Andrew Hewson is running the one on the big lake, and the same applies, again meet around 10am second car park. Everybody welcome, any time that you can give will be much appreciated.
