8th January 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Rees Sweeney fished the river Wyre at Churchtown and worked hard fishing the stick float and maggots in eight different swims. He set-up with 1.5 lb main line and 1lb hook length with an 18's barbless hook and double maggot at the business end. Rees started approximately a mile down from the bridge. The first two swims nothing, the third a small brownie, likewise and a minnow the next, two small chub and another small brownie, zilch at the next two swims, but there was a day ticket angler on the far bank who had caught 2 chub using bread and small pieces of meat. Undeterred and simply enjoying being on the river he inadvertently saved the best until last by catching 8 Chubb, 2 trout, and another minnow, and lost two decent fish. He had a brilliant first trip out of the year with his fingers crossed for the rest of 2019.
James Griffiths enjoyed his visit to the River Dane at Holmes Chapple where in a two-hour session trotting maggot down his swim he caught 12 grayling, a tiny trout, plus a chub of 3-12-0 which gave a good account of itself on light tackle. One of the grayling was this year's fry which is really good for the future.
New member Alex Theobold snatched a short session on the River Alyn and fished stick float after digging out his centre pin reel. In an hour he had three grayling and two brownies on maggot more than happy with his first visit. It is also worth a visit to the main river as the Dee is in good fettle at present and worth a trip if you fancy a crack at the grayling and chub that seem to be on the feed.
Mike Pritchard fished 'the dead length' on the Bridgewater Canal and had over twenty roach some of which were chunky caster fish. Pike were striking along the length and towards the end of his session one had a go at the fish in his keepnet which is now in need of replacement. Another angler who came for a walk down the length told him that he had a really good session on bread punch at London Bridge.
Our Sunday Mersey Series at Mersey Walk this week saw committee member Mike Dench clock up an early 2019 win with 9-3-0 of roach and perch. He had only one small roach on groundbait feeder but a change to pole and pinkie fished at 13metres saw him catch from the off. Whereas Roy Everson caught his fish using both groundbait feeder and bolo with maggot on the hook to take second place with 7-7-0. Eighteen fished.
The first Disabled & Over 60's Match of the year saw excellent catches when local rod George Barber aka 'The Breadman' fished his favourite pole and bread punch for a cracking winning weight of 14-7-10. He caught roach and hybrids plus a surprise perch of 2-13-0 and lost a bigger one at the net with not a maggot in sight. Stu Bryan on the next peg took second place with 12-5-9. Ron Durr thought he was in the main money but only managed a section win with what would normally have been a winning weight of 9-7-5. Jimmy Byrne hadn't had a bite until a boat went though adding a bit of colour to the water and he then managed 4-9-7 in around an hour and three quarters.
