12th December 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th December, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett has set himself a challenge for the last couple of years to try to winkle out a tench from Grey Mist Mere during December. The weather forecast this past week didn't look too promising however on Wednesday Neil managed to time his visit just before we had our first taste of the winters snow. Casting a small maggot feeder around midway to try to find fish that had woken up resulted in a tentative bite and soon a grumpy 5.5lb tench lay in the landing net. One bite, one fish, but good fun and mission accomplished.

It is not very often that both Bridgewater Canal and Mersey matches don't take place but the freezing weather conditions this week saw both cancelled. Although matches are advertised it is wise to check with the organiser that they are still on until this weather improves.

Committee members Ade Green and Mike Dench decided to give both the above venues a miss and set out instead for Appleton Reservoir. Targeting roach they both fished a small ground bait feeder with maggot or double pinkie on the hook and soon started catching small roach. A change by Mike to corn on the hook with a few grains in the feeder saw him up his catch rate with a better stamp of fish. Ade had to leave early but Mike was still catching and stayed on undeterred by the sudden snow squalls. He reckoned he had thirty plus roach, the majority between 6-8ozs for a weight of between 12 to 15lbs.

I really would welcome a few more catch reports, please email to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

5th December 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th December, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Dylan Coyle aged 9 years is now coming up to his third year as a Warrington Anglers Association member and from those early beginnings he has become an avid angler and caught a fair selection of different species. Although he had as yet to catch his first pike. After trying for the past two months a recent short session and change of venue to Statham Pool finally brought success. Dylan's sprat dead bait was taken by one of these toothy predators and after a brief fight the pike lay in his landing net. It is one of those angling milestones that will be in his memory forever. Well done Dylan.

Twenty-two members fished our Annual Disabled & Over 60's Prize Match held on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge on Monday. Catches were made up of mainly roach and perch with the better results coming from pegs between Houghs and Walton Gardens Bridges. Lennie (end peg) Dutton took the winners purse for the second week in succession and weighed in 8-4-10 which is a cracking catch for this time of the year. Barry Chambers on the adjacent peg was in second place with 7-12-11. Everyone received a prize.

That well known saying that 'age is but a number' certainly holds true for octogenarian Norman Gannon who had the fish of the day and the biggest weight during our Mersey Sunday Series and failed to get in the money. Unfortunately, his catch which gave a good account of itself on light tackle was a salmon around the 5lbs mark which do not count in matches. Jimmy Byrne took the winners purse with 3-6-0 of small roach taken on a ground bait feeder and maggot. I expect it was some consolation that Norman's brother Jim took second place as rumour has it that they share winnings.

This is vitally important and the duo are collating all your information. Also noisy scaring measures may be employed where required.
