Fwd: Guardian column

August 9th, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian notes

Again this Summer the Koi Herpes Virus commonly referred to as KHV is appearing on various  fisheries one in  Cornwall a county where many anglers from this area take their holiday,  a couple of fisheries in the Midlands also  are affected.  Today we got notification that has been found to be causing carp deaths  in Fleetwood Reservoir in Lancashire.

This is a particularly nasty and virulent disease which as  the name suggests comes from ornamental koi carp imports. This made the recent discovery that some irresponsible person had stocked at least one koi carp  illegally into Moore Quarry all the more worrying..

If you have koi,  goldfish or in fact  any fish in your garden pond and don't want them anymore please re home them responsibly, not into the local canal, river or lake where they can bring any number of parasites and diseases to the native fish stocks. KHV  affects all carp and carp hybrids. If a water becomes infected it has to be closed down until the outbreak is over and then it has to be monitored .

The virus is very easily spread by anglers. The best way to avoid spreading it to other fisheries is for all anglers to dry their nets, net bags, stink bags and unhooking mats between fishing trips. For further information  there is a list of affected fisheries on the DEFRA/ Fish Health Inspectorate website. Please don't inadvertently bring it to any of our waters.

Thanks must  go to the members who turned out for the work party on Big Sandiway last weekend they managed to get plenty done, although a few more hands would have been appreciated,  they cracked on and  rounded the day off  with a barbecue.

Committee member Ade Green thought the bream were finally back on Saturday when he hooked one of 3lb in the Saturday Mersey match which he went on to win with 10lb. Sadly it was just a stray and the rest are still in hiding the rest of his catch were small roach and perch all on pole and maggot.

The Disabled & Over 60's match this week consisted wholly  of nets of small roach although the weights were not huge the anglers were kept busy.
Ackers pits is giving good roach sport for members as is Statham pool with an  occasional single figure  carp. High Legh carp and small tench and Woodshaw are all providing good sport there have been some nice common carp coming out of  Worthington Lakes too.

Still reports of good barbel catches in from the Ribble at Hurst Green for members prepared to take that long long walk.

2nd August, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Barbel have been feeding on our stretch of the Ribble at Hurst Green where Seven Gledhill has been enjoying the excellent sport that this fishery can produce when conditions and approach are right. Steven sent me some really good photographs of some of his catch which included six barbel to 11-3-2 and another which just crept into double figures. He also had a decent sized chub which he did not weigh and reckons it was over 6lbs …. It looked closer to 8 for my money. Steven rang the changed bait-wise and caught on pellet, boilies, and luncheon meat. He was at the venue again on Saturday night and caught two more quality barbel and a few chub.

Paul McConnell thought that he had written off his session on the river when his car broke down on route to the venue. However being so close and his car fixed he managed to fit in an hours fishing and all his pearlier problems were soon forgotten when he landed an 11pounder.

Geoff Maddock introduced his mate Mike Louch to the pleasures of fishing on the Mount at Buckley on Sunday where Mike landed carp just short of double figures. This fishery is full of fish with the best specimens being roach over 2lbs plus quality tench, bream, and perch with always the chance of a rod bender by way of a carp or two, the latter nor massive fish but nevertheless good sport if you are simply after a good days fishing.

Match organiser Ray Boden found that once again Kingsway allotments worked for him when he collected another win in our Saturday Mersey Series with 10-7-0 net of roach and perch caught on pole and maggot tactics. Second placed Rod Frazer fished the same method but fished caster to weigh 7-2-0.

Sundays Mersey Series was won by Neil Davies who caught on pole and caster throughout for another roach/perch catch weighing in at 7-4-0. Runner-up was John Green with a similar net of fish for 6-13-0. Certainly the bream shoals seem to be conspicuous by their absence and I have more than a sneaking suspicion that a Hilbre Island predator is responsible.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal saw Vice President Geoff Brooks put together a winning net of silver fish for 5-0-8. Certainly great to see Geoff back in the winners place collecting the coin. Stu Patterson was in second place with 4-2-6.
