Mandi Paul who has only just returned to angling after a two year layoff following a serious illness had a cracking starting session at Grey Mist Mere that ended up with her landing a superb specimen tench and a PB of 7-6-0. She fished a maggot feeder with imitation maggot on the hook. Sadly her partner Mark Aitchison did not fare as well. Steve and Paul Briddon along with their friend Malcolm Wilson shared an eleven tench catch with. What made it even more special was that Malcolm had never previously caught a tench over 6lbs but finished with three over that weight and five in total. All fell to maggot feeder and red maggots. Dan Millington reports a catch eleven tench on Thursday morning with the best weighing 5-15-0. He was using a maggot feeder and some left over maggots and when they were running low he mixed in casters to extend his session.

New member Andy Beddeson was absolutely thrilled with the work that had been carried out by our volunteers at Fosters Lodges in Wigan, so a big pat on the back for them. He was likewise made up with his first WAA session which started off with rudd to 6ozs, roach 8ozs, and a chub of 1.5lbs that gave some serious stretch to his light elastic. Pole-fished maggot accounted for around 15lbs of fish and as he said he had "a great day."

I have had a late report of a 28lbs common carp caught by Joe Walters from Rixton Claypits that was taken on a spicy peanut boilie. Tench and bream are also feeding well and the water is definitely worth a visit.

A sleeping bag has been found at Grey Mist Mere if the owner contacts me I will put them in touch with the member who has retained it for safe keeping.

Anyone who is saving Sainsburys Active Kids vouchers for our juniors would you please either take them into Cheshire Angling or drop them through our HQ letterbox at 52 Parker Street as they finish next week and we must exchange them for equipment soon after.

Don't forget if you have a night permit you can only book on between 9am and 6pm. Messages left outside these times will not be accepted. Also please note our night permit fisheries are largely on private waters and members are not allowed nocturnal visitors on these from either non-members or members who are not booked on the fishery at that time.

Following a few gruelling sessions on our waters Neil Plunkett decided to take my advice and try Rixton Claypits. Well thank goodness he could not go wrong! He caught thirty seven bream with half a dozen or so easily over 3lbs, in fact he weighed one rather than guess which sent the scales round to 4lbs so he was underestimating. He also included a tench between 3and 4lbs before he ran out of bait. All were caught on the feeder, moistened micro-pellets flavoured with chocolate and hookbaits were luncheon meat, pellets, or pepperoni hair-rigged on a 4inch hook length. New member Kev Hendry also chose Rixton as his debut fishery and wasn't disappointed. In his four hour session he caught continuously bream, tench, and roach alternating between sweetcorn, maggots, and bread.

New member Tom Young visited Cicily Mill Pool for the first time and was impressed with the excellent condition of the fish and indeed the water as a whole. It is nice to get that feedback from members on first visits. Using a method feeder loaded with pellets a fake corm on a fine fluorocarbon hooklink he had six bream.

The beauty of fishing on a canal is partly the never knowing what you are going to hook into next. On Sunday Julian Lowe was fishing on the Bridgewater just up from Watersmeet on the Kraft Arm feeding pellet and fishing over it with both maggot and caster. Fishing the pole with maggot on the hook the first fish he caught was a pike about 6lbs neatly hooked in the scissors. This was followed by an eel around 2.5lbs which fought like a tiger; a change to double caster resulted in half a dozen bream. Then he hooked into something that shot off like a train causing him to sprint along the towpath pole in hand to keep in touch with the fish. After a tussle with elastic at full stretch he slid his net under a common carp of about 12lbs. 

I really cannot believe following all the warnings and publicity regarding the dangers of fishing beneath overhead power cables that we still have anglers putting their lives at risk. A young angler was reported last week blithely fishing directly beneath the high voltage cables on Grey Mist despite our clear enough ruling: - "Fishing is not allowed beneath or within 30metres distance either side of overhead power cables."
