8th March 2011 Franks Column

8th March 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Well done to both our teams who on Sunday both won their respective matches in the first round of the Angling Times Supercup Competition. Our Warrington Blue Team fished on Meadow View against Penketh & Old Hall Angling Society whilst our Warrington Black Team battled it out against Richmonds Gold on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton. Our confidence in putting two Intermediate young anglers into each team was repaid when they all won their sections. Not much pressure the next match eh lads? Please see our website for full results.
The weekly Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal saw results hit by the heavy frosts with joint first places going to George Barber and John Sharp who both weighed 2-0-8. Twenty members fished but the 'weights' were restricted to just a few pegs where the fish were shoaled up. Currently cormorants are increasingly becoming a problem and the sooner the Angling Trust secures some tangible solution the better.
Sport on the River Dane improved from the slow start on Saturday with anglers reporting chub to 3lbs, grayling, and even a few trout.  There has been a lot of damage to various parts of the bank by the recent floods so if this is your favourite fishery we are looking for any volunteers. Please give me a ring or drop me an email.
On Friday I managed a days fishing on the Dee accompanied by Paul Prescott an avid carp angler who had never previously fished on a river. I headed for my favourite bagging up swims at Worthenbury. The river was in sight when disaster, the recent floods had gouged out a section of track. Finally across and parked, two previously set-up float rods with matched centre-pins were soon out searching the swims. Two hours later with not so much as a squashed maggot I could see I was slowly losing any hope with my conversion strategy.
A quick change of venue to the Dee/Alyn confluence was going to be my last chance. A change of tactics saw Paul in semi-familiar territory using a feeder rod set-up which after a few casts resulted in his first ever dace. This was followed by a series of cracking grayling to over 1.75lbs and another first. As for myself, well I continued running a stick-float from the mouth of the Alyn up to Pauls swim regularly taking grayling, sometimes from virtually under his feet. If size matters then Paul clearly won the day, but irrespective we had a good days sport. Successful bait was bronzed maggots which judging by the state of his hands and face was another first!
Sport at Grey Mist is still dominated by tench however a few carp have been reported both stockies and original fish to 17lbs. Similarly tench and the odd carp is being caught from Rixton, best a mirror of 16-8-0.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 1st March 2011 Franks Column

1st March 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

What a difference a couple of days and a few miles made on the Bridgewater Canal comparing the results of the Warrington Local Winter League on Saturday at Walton and Mondays Disabled & Over 60's match held at Grappenhall.

In the local league Neil Buist had yet another outstanding win with 9-13-0 well ahead of runner up and rising young star Jack Bellis on 5-13-0. Two days later it could have been a different venue as local match ace Jimmy Byrne needed only 1-9-0 to take the main money. Weights then dropped to 14-8 of tiny perch put on the scales by John Sharp.

Still hot, in fact sizzling according to reports on Ackers Pit with two anglers on Sunday having between 40 and 50 carp apiece, all mirrors except for a solitary common. I understand that the same pegs produced over 40 fish to other anglers earlier in the day. Martin Egan had a late session for an all silver fish catch of  rudd and quality roach. Don't forget it's strictly barbless hooks and no keepnets on this fishery. Would the young angler who left behind a small tackle box on Sunday give me a ring.

Andy Smith made two visits to our River Wye fishery last week, on the first occasion he had 5 grayling on the feeder and 3 on the stick-float, all were around 2lbs. On Thursday fishing a different swim he had 8 grayling to 1-8-0, a trout, and 4 chub on legered meat. In the late afternoon he fancied a change and cast a float-legered sardine towards an overhanging willow and within only 5minutes an 18lbs pike lay in his net. He cast back to the same spot and thirty minutes later another of 17-12-0 lay in the net. Some brace eh?

If Sandiway Lakes are your favourite venue, why not join our group of members who are single minded in their efforts to make this fishery quite simply the best. Their objective is 13 new pegs completed within March plus the re-stoning of the oak tree car park and access track. Interested? Give me a ring or drop me an email and I will pass your contact details to Barrie Sheppard who is coordinating the works.
