13th April 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

At our monthly committee meeting on Monday it was an easy task to choose the recipients of our Catch of the Month prizes with Jeff Mobray taking the senior member prize with his capture of the famous Cicely Mill common at 30-12-0 and Mike Spavin the junior prize with a 23lbs common from Rixton Claypits. Both receive more than they can carry in Bait-Tech products plus a Korda carp care kit.

At our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday Lenny Dutton took the honours in a low weight but close event with 3-13-1 of small roach and gudgeon. Jim Byrne was runner up with a similar catch for 2-11-7. Paul Bibby notched up his first taste of any coin for some time when he struck into a lightning fast bite and landed an old leather purse containing £3.70.

Lee Emsden reports that some big bream are being caught from Sandiway Large Lake with the smallest at over 10lbs they are really impressive fish. I believe one was so large that the angler could not get his hand around its back! Tench ranging between 5 and 8lbs are also showing up in catches although it is quiet on the carp scene.

For a trial period throughout April, May, and June anglers can fish the small Lake at Sandiway for two consecutive nights to open up the potential of this picturesque and productive Association owned fishery. With a limit of ten anglers there will be plenty of pegs remaining. It is important that when booking on for night fishing at Sandiway that anglers clearly state the lake they intend to fish, i.e. large or small would be sufficient.  Also in the interests of fair play anglers cannot fish the lakes more than five days in any seven.

Grey Mist Mere is still producing tench catches with fish to 6lbs and one angler on Monday had four carp with the best a linear of 23lbs but interestingly he also caught one of the new mirrors at 14lbs. It is vitally important that anglers send in pictures of both sides of these fish in order that we can monitor their growth rates as more are ordered for the end of the year.

Please continue sending in your catch reports as they are valuable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, night permits, and new memberships (these can also be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk )

6th April 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Junior member Mike Spavin reports catching a cracking mirror common carp from Rixton Clay Pits last week. The fish weighed in at 23lbs exactly and took four hair rigged worms in a savage take. It is his second carp from this popular fishery the previous also a common was 15lbs. Good mixed catches of skimmers and roach reported over the Easter weekend taken mainly on maggot. A few tench are showing but nothing like the numbers that the fishery is capable of producing.

Old news I know but definitely worth a mention is that a little over a week ago Tom Thornton had the big mirror from our Sankey St Helens Canal fishery. This fish seems to have taken up residence at the Spike Island end of the canal and has been caught a number of times lately. It weighed in at 32-6-0.

Member Ian Royce has been targeting Worthington Lakes for the past eighteen months and just fancied a session on a smaller water. In contrast his chosen venue of the D fishery at our Fosters Pools mini-complex was a mere puddle, but as Ian discovered size isn't everything. He reckons that he had his best days fishing in many years with roach, rudd, chub and carp literally crawling up the rod from the start of his session. Waggler and loose-fed maggots was the successful method.

Worthington Lakes are pretty quiet at present and the best catch I have heard was eight carp, but small roach and a few bream are still responding to small groundbait feeder tactics. As a matter of interest as the tale is told there are supposed to have been barbel stocked into Worthington Reservoir (the one near our car park) many years ago. Has anyone caught one and when?

Thanks to those members that responded positively regarding the unauthorized introduction of golden orfe into Woodshaw Reservoir that I mentioned in last weeks column. Their actions minimized the probability of them interbreeding with our resident fish stocks although members should remain alert and retain any such fish contacting me immediately.

Our team of volunteers was out in force over the weekend at Phoenix Park Lake clearing swims and removing masses of weed and water borne litter. It was great to see that there was very little of the latter that is largely due to the positive actions of our bailiffs and park rangers. Spring also has seen our ongoing peg reconstruction work under way again after the winter period. The loss of the gudgeon bank area was a blow but as more pegs are re-stoned and improved it will redress the balance. Our bailiff reports good numbers of pike are being caught but they are generally single figure fish.

Please keep sending in your catch reports as they help both fellow members and your management committee in their continuous fishery evaluation. Tel. 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
