14th July 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Worthington lakes are continuing to provide excellent sport with double figure catches a regular occurrence.  Dickie Wernham and Ernie Hutchinson went on Sunday for a session and were as enthusiastic as every about the place, just fishing waggler about eight foot deep with caster or red maggot both anglers caught steadily, skimmers to 2lb , roach to 1lb+ and some really good perch to 1.5lb as well as being snapped off by bigger fish a couple of times. The perch particularly pleased Ernie because they were in immaculate condition the coloration really striking which must be due to the clear clean water they are living in. All were caught quite close in so pole would probably have been just as successful.  They also paid a visit to the Bridgewater and reported that it is `fishing its head off' plenty of roach, skimmer bream and again some really good perch on maggot and caster.

After a long absence from fishing, she used to fish with her Granddad when she was a child, new member Jenny Carter  ventured on to Cecily Mill pool to get back into the swing of things. Fishing a whip close in to the reeds and feeding red maggot and hemp Jenny had a good catch of roach to 8-10oz and three nice crucian carp to 2lb.

Statham pool provided a surprise catch for Steve Gray at the weekend fishing pole and red maggot at eight meters he had been catching roach and skimmers happily for a few hours when a better fish on which he thought was a chub took his bait. After a good scrap he netted an eel which was two foot long this was followed shortly after by another of almost identical size again giving a good account of itself and a bit of a challenge to his light tackle. We have been trying to find a table of eel weight to length ratio's and nearest we can come up with is that it was probably about 1.5lb if anyone knows of a definitive table for eels we would be interested in getting a copy.

There are decent catches of tench most in the 5-6lb range from Rixton but the carp are proving to be elusive the story is much the same at Grey Mist. The Forsters pools D&C are doing well plenty of small fish on pole and maggot with odd bigger carp showing.

The river Wye looked to be in less than top form to Alan Bashford recently and he was doubtful that he would catch at all however  despite it being very low he still managed ten chub and two small barbel. I am guessing by now the river level will be somewhat higher!

The there has been a pollution incident on the river Trent at Alrewas apparently a problem at a sewage works in the vicinity, we are still waiting to hear if or how badly our stretch has been affected.

The Mersey was in flood on Sunday so the match was quickly moved to Spike Island on the Sankey canal at Widnes. This turned out to be a pretty good choice and winner Mike Thornbury put 15lb 4oz of rudd, roach and one eel on the scales. The majority were caught on waggler. In contrast the junior festival match was dire and the juniors struggled for bites Luke Boden took the honors with 11oz of roach.

7th July 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The rivers for the most part have been low and quiet for the last while but that looks set top change in a big way judging by the thunder storm which is raging and the torrential downpour accompanying it as I write. The Dane has been notably quiet, with Andy Leech having the best catch last week of four chub two at 4lb and some grayling. However the rain there yesterday should have already have improved things dramatically.

Steve Plant's recent a red letter day when he achieved his new personal best tench on feeder fished red maggot, just netted him another in the shape of the Bait Tech ` Catch of the month' prize of £100 worth of quality bait and a Korda Fish care kit. The 9lb tench which was part of a trio of tench narrowly scraped in when our committee discussed the merits of the various entries. Commiserations to the other entrants but don't forget there is now another prize for July up for grabs.

We are running a junior open match on Saturday at Ackers pit to coincide with the Stockton Heath Festival. Consequently the fishery will be closed to members until 4pm. The match is open to young anglers age fifteen and under. Entry will be by ticket because the number of pegs is limited to twenty six. Tickets are available from Cheshire Angling, Thelwall Lane, Latchford price £2 the entry fee will all be paid out in prizes for the winners. Please note anglers must be competent to fish unaided as it is a competition and not a coaching session.

Our junior and intermediate teams were out last weekend representing us in the Angling Trust National championships at Cudmore, the fishing was not great and there were no trophies heading back to Warrington this time but they all did their best, enjoyed the experience and were a credit to the Association which is exactly what it's all about!

One of our members had a nasty experience at Sandiway last week he was enjoying the peace quietly watching the family of swans sedately swimming around in the sun when all hell broke loose. The three black Labradors and a golden retriever plunged into the lake next to his bivvy. The swans in their panic become entangled in his rods and line and eventually caused it to snap which left the female dragging line behind her much to the anglers' distress.

He shouted to the offending dog owner to control her dogs which of course should have been on leads on the public footpath anyway and not marauding around on our property.

Needless to say she didn't hang around but disappeared at speed without even a word of apology leaving him to try his best to free the swan alone. The line has since been removed and the swans are un-injured. Anglers would usually get the blame for such a scenario, and sadly not the stupid, irresponsible dog owner who has no regard for other people or wildlife.

There will be a work party at Bicton this weekend to upgrade the fencing and trim the car park and replace the gate so if anyone is interested in helping out please let me know. There are more planned for some of the other welsh waters too in the near future and we will be calling on our local volunteers to get involved.

Don't forget to let us have your Catch of the Month entries for July and keep the catch reports coming please.
