10th March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Joe Dagnall took the individual top spot in the Warrington AA Local Winter League despite suffering from a severe dose of dehydration. He fished pole and punch bread for a mixed net of skimmers and roach. Andy Lewis from the next peg followed closely on his heels with a similar catch putting 8-6-0 on the scales. Clampits took the team honours on the day with 24 points. Teams overall with only one match to fish looks to be a certain win for Warrington Red who only need to turn up to win the league flowed by Cheshire Red, with Clampits and Cheshire Gold battling for third place.

Our Sunday National Squad fund match on the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton really produced some astounding sport on a wild and windy day. Committee member Graham Belton drawn on the basin put 9lbs on the scales to win with over 1.5lbs to spare. He fished a mixture of punch, casters, and worm for a net of skimmers, roach, and big perch. Neil Davies had a similar net for runner-up spot with 7-6-0. Craig Richie's catch of eleven roach taken on caster and waggler tactics could have possibly won but a few missed bites proved expensive.

Grey Mist Mere is still producing some reasonable tench catches but only a few carp have been reported.

Martin James had a good session on the River Dane on Sunday netting eleven chub in the 3.5 to 4lbs range. He moved swims a few times and used the simple but deadly method of free-lining a chunk of bread. A few small grayling also being caught on maggot.

Just a reminder that the coarse fish close season closes at midnight on Saturday 14th March so if you fancy a last chuck we are running the very last match of the season on this sad day, draw 8am Victoria Park.

3rd March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

There have been mixed reports from the River Dee but the best was a catch of sixteen grayling for over 23lbs. This quality catch was taken by member Alan Coles from our Shocklach fishery using a maggot feeder and double red maggot on the hook. George Green fishing at Worthenbury reports eleven to 4lbs taken on the stickfloat and bronze maggot.

The world loves a trier so after a number of attempts the fish of the month competition for February was won by Jamie Hankinson with a capture of a superbly marked pike of 16-12-0 caught on the 21st February from the tiny River Wyre. The fish fell for float fished smelt.

Keith Green just missed out with a personal best tench of 6-9-0 from Grey Mist Mere, better luck next time Keith.

A rare report from our Moat Fishery by keen member Dave Brinkley who after battling his way through brambles thought he had found the fishing equivalent of the lost world. His first cast with a tiny Mepps resulted in a swirl of a big fish as it missed the lure. However the second cast was met with a vicious take which saw a 6.5lbs pike in the net. This was soon followed by a smaller jack after which Dave had to leave for home but with a return visit imminent.

The Mersey match saw a change of fortunes with a few more fish on the feed which pleased regular Paul Harding who put 2.5lbs of roach on the scales for top spot. Runner up Mike Thornbury was only a few ounces light with a skimmer bream catch.

The Macclesfield Canal national squad fund match at Scholar Green was won by Ros Whiteman who included a cracking perch of 2-7-0 taken on caster in his 5-7-4 net. An all roach catch of 5-2-12 taken on bread punch by Gary Mannion placed him second. The average catch was over 3lbs per man.

The membership booklets have suffered a delay due to printing problems but are now back on track and are due to go out this week. We have separated the maps from the booklet and produced a superb colour map book complete with post codes for satnav owners. Although we do not condone drinking and driving they usually refer to the nearest pub as fisheries as a rule do not have post codes. If paying by post send only the membership booklet for payment.

Bailiff Pete Copsey has organised a working party on our Rixton Fishery on Sunday, 15th March 2009. Meet 9am on car park.
