14th October Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

 

The Bridgewater canal between Edge Lane and Brooklands Bridge at Sale which previously was not covered by our license has now been added and completes the stretch from Preston Brook right through to Morley's Bridge Leigh (A580 road bridge).

 

 The two mile stretch is now open for members to fish and match bookings are being taken.

 As on the rest of the Bridgewater canal `members only' is the rule, bailiffs will be giving the area extra attention. The only exception is pre arranged match bookings where non members may be included on payment of a day guest member's fee. 

 

Last weekend the river Dane gave a good indication of potential grayling sport this coming winter although quiet earlier in the week the river hit form when there were a few anglers there to enjoy it. Best catch of grayling fell to Ray Newton who had nineteen all around the 1lb mark trotting maggot. Paul Edwards on the same method had 5 chub to 4.5lb Nigel Anthony had nine chub to 4lb plus grayling on small pellets.

The Mersey was on good form for the Sunday match too, when 19 anglers put 85lb of fish on the scales only eight members out of the 27 who drew tipped back and didn't bother to weigh in.

 

For members enjoying tackling the Worthington Lakes at Standish a bit of good news this week in that  the use of ground bait in feeders is now allowed. This should make connecting with the large bream shoals a much better prospect.

 

Although Ackers pit is looking great and the paths and outfall are completed please note it is not open for fishing yet. More tree work and construction of pegs is due to begin, any members willing to volunteer to lend a hand will be most welcome. If you are interested in being involved please get in touch. Stocking will be continuing gradually throughout the winter when the right fish become available cruciens, roach, rudd and tench are all on the wish list. We will be adding some tench which I have just ordered in the next few weeks….they are coming from `down south' and are health checked fish straight from the fish farm…. expensive but we want good healthy stock for Ackers.

  We could have moved tench from some of our other waters but in order to do so and comply with Environment Agency rules we would need to kill a sample batch of fish for health checking because Ackers Pit has an outflow into another watercourse. For this reason alone it is imperative that the fish are from an impeccable source with minimal chance of spreading any new disease or parasite for the future wellbeing the fishery.

The river Mersey was in flood on Sunday so match organiser Bob Campbell took the decision

on safety grounds to use the reserve venue of Appleton reservoir. The result was a very productive match with good nets of quality roach taken on feeder and either single or double maggot. Alan Faulkner was almost 6lbs clear of runner-up Jimmy Byrne with an impressive weight of 17-2-5.

 

Our junior members swept the board in the September Bait Tech catch of the month competition the main prize of over £100 value has been won by 16 years old Dom Radley with a stunning 10lb 3oz tench caught from Grey mist. The olive green beauty fell for a tiger nut flavoured boilie topped with sweetcorn and hit the bait only seconds after it had reached the bottom. It beats his previous personal best by over 4lbs and the picture will be on our web site shortly.

 

 The £50 value junior prize goes to newly joined member Edward Parr for his 15lb 4oz mirror also from Grey Mist Mere. This was a short lived personnel best as a 16lb mirror followed in the same session. Edward submitted the 15lb 4oz fish because he judged it to be a more attractive fish albeit slightly smaller. Both anglers also receive a Korda Carp care kit to enable them to apply treatment if required to any of their future captures.

 

Thanks to all those who submitted their pictures and don't forget keep those entries coming in for the October competition. You've got to be in it to win it!

 

Good news from our growing on pool is that all species are thriving, especially the carp which are the protegeny of Horseshoe Lake fish. They are now well past the pastie size but it will be a few years until they will be ready for stocking into our other fisheries. Hopefully we will be taking out some of the tench and roach which have thrived on their high protein diet for introduction to Ackers Pit. The whole project is a joint partnership with Ineos Chlor.

 

Prior to this past weeks monsoon conditions some quality chub and barbel have been showing on our Association owned stretch of the Ribble. Brian Percival had a personal best chub of 5-8-7 and barbel to just over 9lbs. I have had a few reports lately of anglers encroaching on others swims, either by wading or in the case of coarse anglers simply setting up too close.
