I received sad news this week that former Warrington Anglers Association committee member and Vice President Geoff Brooks passed away suddenly last week. He was a keen angler to the end coming second in our 4^th September Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater at Stage Lane,  but was suddenly taken ill on his way back from the fishing shop last weekend. I have a nice image in my mind of Geoff now meeting up again with his old friends Stan Deakin and Ernie Hutchinson and arguing over who gets the best peg. Our condolences at this time to his wife and family.

Jeff Ditchfield enjoyed his trip to the River Wyre last week where fishing a stick-float and maggot he caught plenty of small chub and dace, a couple were real specimens, ending his session with a nice brown trout.  

Mike Pritchard changed his normal Saturday Mersey session at Victoria Park to the Kingsway allotments stretch last week. He fished a waggler with mainly red or bronze maggots for a round fifty roach, five perch, and a couple of dace. He had a few better sized roach on caster.

Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner aka The Dynamic Duo decided this week on a visit to our Moore Quarry fishery where that had not fished for around two years. They both tried a feeder but float-fished maggot was the most productive. Dave ended up with a rudd, thirteen roach to 1lb, and five perch to 1.5lbs. Ken came second with a perch and thirteen roach.

I managed a couple of visits to the Weaver Navigation this past week where it was nice meeting members who were more than happy with their catches and complimentary of the work carried out by our mystery volunteer. I kept it simple, pole at 5metres with balls of groundbait laced with red maggots resulting in almost a roach every cast, a couple of skimmers, plus a few perch, even a chub around 12oz. Biggest I have had from this fishery but there must surely be some specimens. Anybody?

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. The winner Peter Jones drew peg 7 and fished the pole catching a few fish on pinkie but the majority on caster for an all roach catch of 5-12-0. The runner-up was Al Faulkner who wasn't too far behind with 5-5-0 of roach from peg 10. Al fished pole and pinkie at 11metres. Sixteen anglers fished. 

Our Sunday River Mersey Championship members match was at the last minute due to road closures changed from Victoria Park to the Mersey Walk stretch of the river. Jimmy Byrne drew peg 58 and fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to end up with a weight of 12-9-0 to win the Championship. He included a bonus 3lbs bream and 4 skimmers to add to his catch of around thirty roach. Nick Roberts took second place with 10-11-0 from peg 60 where he stuck to the pole all the match catching a small bream plus roach and perch on caster. Twelve anglers fished.

The 'experience fishing' day which took place as part of The Thelwall Festival celebrations last Sunday afternoon on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge was a success. After weather warnings of rain our expectations were not too great but it held off and the keen youngsters and their parents started to arrive in numbers at 2pm. Everyone who fancied a go did…including some mums and dads with the vast majority catching either a roach or perch on maggots which many had never handled previously. Not so now as most youngsters overcame any fear and ended up feeding their fishing swim, a few even took some home. One youngster left a crocodile on my tray (it was a toy) so if you contact me, I have kept it safe and will hopefully get it back to its rightful owner asap.

Anthony Rough decided on a Sunday morning centrepin session on the Dee at Worthenbury and unlike some had no trouble negotiating the bumpy track in his van, although I wouldn't advise it in any car with low suspension. Loose-feeding maggots with double on the hook he had bites throughout the morning although nothing of any size he caught grayling, small chub, trout, and countless dace. Nice session and beautiful venue.

Members are still catching perch and pike on the Bridgewater Canal, more often than not lure fishing like Ged Richards who managed to land four perch and two mall jack-pike on Saturday morning from the Lymm area. On Sunday Paul Harrison reported catching a few perch on a red worm type lure.

Last weekend Paul Martin fished our River Ribble stretch at Hurst Green for the first time and braved the walk downstream to his chosen peg. His intended quarry was either barbel or chub so he cast in his luncheon meat baited hook accompanied by a pva mesh bag full of pellet and meat. Barely five minutes later he struck into a fish which took him 15minutes to land…a hard fighting 15-3-0 pike.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall trees in torrential rain, thankfully those taking part managed to tackle-up before the heavens opened. Tony Carr who hasn't fished our matches for some time marked his return with an impressive win, a catch of five bream plus roach for a weight of 16-15-0. He drew to the right of entrance to the canal opposite Euclid Avenue and fished the pole catching initially on bread but swapped to worm and caster. The runner-up Dave Blears drew the peg next door with 6-12-0 made up of two bream plus roach using both bread and caster. Fourteen anglers fished. 

Our Sunday Mersey Series members match was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and saw Harry Billing draw end peg 56 where fishing the pole at 11metres with pinkie on the hook he left the rest of the field trailing with a cracking net of roach, perch, and a few skimmers for a winning weight of 19-8-0. It gave him a 10lb margin over second placed Ray Boden who weighed-in 9-5-0 made up of roach and perch from peg 47. Harry's win made it a consecutive double whereas Ray has claimed the runner-up spot for the past three weeks also fishing the pole and maggot. Reportedly there was only one decent sized bream caught throughout the match. Twelve anglers fished.

Warrington Anglers Association have teamed up to support The Thelwall Festival celebrations on the afternoon of Sunday 17^th September when we are offering a free 'experience fishing' day on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge between 2pm to 4-30pm/5pm. Access to our carpark and the canal is via the dirt track opposite All Saints Drive, Thelwall.

Anthony Rough spent a three -session in the rain at the Mount at Buckley on Monday afternoon pondering the wisdom of leaving his fishing brolly at home. Fortunately, the fishing was good which took his mind off the wet conditions. He ended up with lots of small perch, plus a few better stamp fish plus three carp. All were caught on a waggler rig with prawn on the hook feeding some leftover casters from a recent river session. Thanks, Anthony, for clearing litter left by what I would describe as poachers.

Regular contributor Mike Pritchard was out on the early pegs of the Mersey at Victoria Park for his Saturday escape session. Using his homemade floats, he fished one and a half rods out in the shallower water with either caster or maggot on the hook. He ended his almost 4hour session with seven perch and forty roach up to 8oz. He reports a good number of bream rolling towards mid-river.

The Dynamic Duo (Dave Gardner & Ken Hewitt) were out again this time they decided to give High Legh a bash. Ken fishing a waggler had a slow start eventually catching a perch followed by an epic fight with an 8lbs carp which he eventually landed. As they were packing up, he landed another carp of 6.5lbs. Dave alternated between a waggler and maggot changing over to a method feeder to end up with fourteen roach plus a 10.5lbs mirror carp which was attracted to his homemade groundbait with prawn on the hook.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne drew peg 1 on the Northwich side of the bridge and ended up with a net of (as he describes them) 'dumpy roach' caught on red maggot then caster, initially down the track and then across at 11metres in the shallower water for a winning weight of 7-13-0. Second placed Ron Durr drew in Billinge Marina and caught some quality fish on pole and maggot at 4metres for a net that sent the scales round to 6-10-0. Eighteen anglers fished. 

Our Sunday Mersey Series members match was fished again this week along the Victoria Park stretch of the Mersey. Note there is a change of venue next week to Mersey Walk thanks to all the work carried out by volunteers during the past week or so…great job guys. Harry Billing took first place with a cracking net of roach and perch fishing the long pole and maggot from peg 27 for a weight of 18-1-0. Whereas Ray Boden fished the pole at 9metres to take another nice net of roach and perch for 15-7-0 to hang on to second place again. Thirteen anglers fished.

Gary Chadwick was on the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton this past weekend targeting the quality perch that the canal holds. He had a good 10lbs of perch plus a few nice roach on worm before the boats started moving.

Also, on the predator trail over the weekend, Stuart Atherton was on the Bridgewater Canal between Walton and Moore area where fishing small FFS lures he ended up with some plump perch and a cracking looking pike which put a fair bend in his rod.

The Dynamic Duo (Dave Gardner & Ken Hewitt) were out on Friday, this time the River Mersey was their water of choice near the Kingsway allotments. Ken had a mixed bag of roach and perch, best 10oz, all caught on the pole and maggot as unlike his mate he had not even a twitch on the feeder. Dave had a 3.5lbs bream on his first cast baited with a 6mm krill pellet, but then only a few more knocks, then lost one. He also had a dozen decent roach on his float rod with double maggot. As always, no matter what the result they enjoyed their four-hour session.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane, Lymm. With most of the action coming from the first four pegs Rod Fraser was the winner with 5-5-0 from peg 4. Despite this area normally being good bream pegs, none made an appearance but Rod fishing the pole and caster put together a net of chunky roach plus perch. It is great to see our Vice President Geoff Brooks back in the frame taking second place from peg 1 with a similar mixed net of fish caught using pole and mainly pinkie for 3-13-0. Eighteen anglers fished. 

Our Sunday Mersey Series members match was fished again this week along the Victoria Park stretch of the Mersey. The bream were not exactly in a feeding frenzy but the winner Neil Buist aka The Engine managed to snare two decent sized bronze beauties to add to his half a dozen roach and perch for a total weight of 12-2-0. With not much action on the pole Neil had fished mainly a groundbait feeder and maggot. Whereas the runner-up Ray Boden having only caught a perch on the 'long rod' decided to change over and stick it out on the pole at 9metres alternating between maggot or pinkie on the hook to produce a mixed net of roach and perch for 11-8-0. Seventeen anglers fished.
