27th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Phil Brown fished another session at Appleton Reservoir last Thursday and lost a carp on his first cast, and then nothing until mid-morning. He landed four carp in total all taken on 16mm krill boilies feeding using a small mesh bag of free baits cast about 30 yards out.

I don't get many reports from the Macclesfield Canal so thanks to Gary Chadwick who fished at Astbury for his dad's three-year anniversary to be rewarded with a lovely catch of big perch and roach all taken on worm down the track (middle). I definitely agree with his comments that this is an underrated canal.

Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt aka The Dynamic Duo made a return visit to High Legh Fisheries this past week with Dave being determined to catch whatever snapped him seven times on their last visit. Starting off with a float rod and maggot brought a roach thirty seconds later and then alternating between the float and method feeder resulted in a further nine perch. Ken on a method feeder using his own particle bait and sticky toffee syrup with chilli pawn. Between them they caught mirrors 7lbs plus, 12.5lb, 5-3-0, plus more roach. Other members fishing also had a carp apiece. Another enjoyable session.

The Disabled & Over 60's were out on their Monday match at Daresbury Labs this week which saw weights down but the winner George Barber aka The Breadman put together a net of roach and a few perch on bread with a few on pinkie for a weight of 2-15-11. George Barber was close behind with a similar catch for 2-7-12 to take second place. It was a small turn-out with only eleven making it to the draw.

Thanks to the small but dedicated band of volunteers that turned out at Moore Quarry this past weekend. The re-surfaced path, pegs, and clearance was a cracking job and a credit to those who gave their time to help improve the fishery for fellow members to enjoy. More working parties at this venue will be announced…. simply turn up and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.

Working Party on Sunday 2nd October at Sandiway Lakes on both fisheries…. any help would be really appreciated, simply turn up and you will be made welcome.

Peel Ports had divers inspect the weir gates at Howley weir this past week and are now looking at a solution to fix the damage caused by the large tree that collided with the structure. Both Warrington Rowing Club and ourselves have made representations regarding the devastating effect on both our sports.

20th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Notes

20th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A new face targeting the tench at Grey Mist last Thursday was Artur Cieslak who after starting off on the float decided it was too windy and settled for a method feeder and sweetcorn. The end result was eight quality tench, no weights, but clearly cracking specimens and a very happy Artur judging by the pics he shared with fellow members. The previous day David Tomkinson (aka The Tench Whisperer) enjoyed yet another productive session landing fourteen fish, best 7-9-0.

Certainly, the Mist must feature as one of the most productive tench fisheries in the region. It also conjures up fond memories taking me back almost seventy years when I would cycle there on the black sit-up bike my dad had made me from old ones dumped and rescued by a home-made grappling iron from the Mersey opposite where we lived at Paddington Bank. The tench were not as big then but there were plenty of 'bars of soap' to help cement my lifelong interest in our sport. All our yesterdays….

Well, after a series of ten blanks Josh Bamber finally ended his streak of bad luck on Wednesday by catching a great looking twenty pound plus mirror from Appleton Reservoir. His 16mm krill boilies were the bait that brought the more than welcome result. Tight lines Josh, hope this is just the start of more catches to come.

Derek Watts enjoyed his day session at Budworth Mere last week, finishing up with five jack-pike caught using floating wobblers. He lost a couple of fish and on one occasion the jack-pike following his rig was itself being followed by a much bigger specimen which clearly had a different target in mind altogether! He also reports good shoals of rudd and roach topping and another angler catching a couple of carp on a feeder.

Last Thursday regular column contributors Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt aka The Dynamic Duo set out, as described by the latter on 'maggot drowning' on a pleasant sunny day at High Legh Fisheries. The conditions looked ideal and Dave caught what turned out to be the biggest fish of the session, a 7lbs carp on his first cast using feeder and maggot. He also added another dozen roach and perch, using both float-fished and feeder-fished pellet and maggot. He lost seven fish, probably carp. Ken had a mixed bag of roach and perch alternating between 7metre whip with maggot, and a few on method feeder and pellet, a total of fourteen fish. As he stated, an enjoyable relaxing session.

Crabs and crayfish, well this past week anglers reported a Chinese Mitten Crab from the River Alyn and a Signal Crayfish from the River Derwent. These are both invasive species and if anglers are absolutely certain of their identity and can responsibly remove and humanely kill them that is preferable. But if you cannot bring yourself to do this they should be released immediately back where you caught it. It is a good idea to inform the Environment Agency as soon as possible on 0800 80 70 60.

The two working parties this weekend at Moore Quarry will centre around the path area and swim maintenance; any help would be greatly appreciated. Saturday 24th September kicks off at 1pm and on Sunday at 9-30am.

I am still awaiting information from Peel Ports regarding sorting out the ongoing problem at Howley Weir.

13th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The popularity of our Weaver Navigation stretch was endorsed again this past weekend by both Jason Best and Neil Davies. Jason who I remember as one of our junior match anglers having regularly represented WAA in both regional and national championship events really enjoyed his afternoon session, nothing big but plenty of bites to keep him occupied. Neil had a nice few hours catching a decent net of roach and perch taken mainly on caster fishing five sections of pole. Anglers regularly pass comments that this venue is really well looked after…… well, the guy responsible, Martin aka 'the mystery maintainer' fished it himself last Wednesday and was justly rewarded with 184 fish during his 5hour session, mainly skimmers, plus bream and rudd hybrids. He ground-baited his swim topping up regularly and using dead red maggot on the hook at 4 to 5metres.

On Tuesday David Tomkinson or as my wife has now christened him, 'The Tench Whisperer' was on Grey Mist again enjoying yet another productive tench session. When I rang him during the afternoon, he had already landed seventeen tincas despite losing a few in the weed. The biggest weighed in at 8lbs, half a dozen around the 7lbs mark, the rest ranging from 4 to 6lbs. It is little wonder the Mist fish are packing on weight as he fed around a kilo of sweetcorn, 0.5k of hemp, and the same amount of 10mm boilies.

Phil Brown fished at Appleton Reservoir on Friday morning to hopefully tempt some of the quality roach which the fishery holds. Both rods were set-up using a method feeder, one with corn on the hook and the other baited with mini krill boilies. Phil ended up with a few small roach, a baby mirror carp, and a much bigger one of 21lbs which gave a good account of itself on the lighter tackle. Phil commented that he was really chuffed with the smaller fish which really shows the potential of the fishery.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane, Lymm. Rod Fraser was the clear winner this week with a catch of roach and perch boosted by a bonus 2.5lbs bream for a total weight of 5-9-0 taken on pole fished caster and maggot. Alan Brown made it a repeat performance of the previous weeks match again taking the runner-up spot but having to share it with George Barber aka 'The Breadman' when they both weighed in 3-15-0. I have no idea what bait Alan used but I think it is a safe bet that George used the white stuff.

6th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th September 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Simon Oldfield dusted off his match gear on Friday to fit in a practice session in advance of a competition later this month. He tried his luck for the first time on our Weaver Navigation stretch which he described as 'a hidden gem'. The result was a brilliant day's fishing once the fish homed in on his initial three cricket balls of groundbait. He fished the pole between 4 and 5metres to hand with flouro-pinkie proving the best bait for his catch of mainly skimmers but chopped worm and caster also produced some quality perch from the margin. He finished up with just short of 20lbs at the end of his five-hour session. He commented the place is a credit to whoever maintains it and he will definitely be up for another visit.

On Sunday whist meeting up with one of our volunteers at Cicily Mill Pool we both ended up chatting with Dean Loftus regarding his successful session that morning. Fishing the pole at 8metres using caster over hemp he ended up with three tench, best 7lbs, six crucians around 1.5lbs, and to use his words, tons of silvers. During my visit the surface was literally alive with fish topping.

Graeme Edwards face said it all in a photo taken of his cracking chub caught from our stretch of the River Dane at Holmes Chapel during a brief evening session last Wednesday. It was only his second visit to the venue and had already caught two smaller chub when just as he was thinking about packing up, he landed the big one, a nice way to end the session. He fished a leger using a vintage centre pin reel and baiting up with his own concoction of tinned meat marinated in crushed cloves of garlic.

Last Thursday David Tomkinson enjoyed yet another productive tench session at Grey Mist ending up with eighteen tench, the best at 7-8-0 and the smallest maybe 2lbs. He legered at eleven wraps distance using 8mm Mainline boilies over a bed of hemp and sweetcorn. He reports that prior to spawning he had landed three different tench over 10lbs this year.

Jeremy Spruce had just lost a barbel estimated at between 6 and 7lbs from our stretch of the Wye on Monday but was happy enough with his catch of a 5lbs chub. Method was legered spicy meat.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall Trees. In a repeat performance from his win the previous week at Woodshaw Reservoir Jeff Stoll fishing the pole and alternating between bread and maggot put an all roach catch on the scales to make it a double with a weight of 5-2-0.  Alan Brown was the runner-up with a roach and perch catch for 4-8-0. It was great to see octogenarian and Vice President Geoff Brooks take fourth place….. well done Geoff there's life in the old dog yet! Fifteen anglers turned out.
