30th August 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th August 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Paul Martin was frustrated last Wednesday having spent all morning trying to tempt a barbel from the River Dee at Shocklach. After trying a variety of baits, pellets, a mix of boilies, and meat without any signs he finally gave up and tried targeting small stuff like chublets, silvers, and grayling. He had half a dozen chublets to 3/4lb and roach around a 1lb when after an hour he hooked into an obviously much larger fish, yes, it was his original target species, a barbel which following a struggle lay safely in his landing net. It weighed in at 6-3-0 and took corn presented on a size 16's hook. His mate Bob Buchanan ended up with a mixed catch of between forty to fifty grayling, dace, and chublets. Result, a good day had by all on a picturesque venue.

For the record initially barbel were gradually introduced illegally many years ago from venues such as the Severn before finally being stocked officially by the EA in later years.

Ian Simms also enjoyed his session on his first visit to Phoenix Park Lake where pole fishing red maggot he managed to land three feisty tench but not a silver in sight. Happy days.

Arley Reservoir at the Worthington Lakes complex wouldn't have been my choice over a Bank Holiday weekend but Steve Porter played it crafty with an early morning Monday session. Fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot he ended up with four bream, best around 4lbs plus half a dozen roach, ending up with around twenty fish.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery. Thankfully it wasn't a low weight affair like the previous week and the winner Jeff Stoll fishing the pole at 10metres was the decisive winner with 17-3-0 and almost 5lbs to spare over the next angler. He drew peg 19 and fished worm and caster to lure 8 crucians plus skimmers. Second placed Jimmy Byrne drew peg 3 and with the wind in his face needed only to fish at 5metres using red maggot for his net of roach, perch, and three skimmers for a weight of 12-9-0. Twenty-three anglers turned out and a good number had catches over 5lbs.

There were working parties at both Sandiway Lakes, Rixton Claypits, and Cicily Mill Pool over the Bank Holiday weekend. Thanks to all the volunteers who turned out and for those considering future working parties trust me you will be made very welcome and your help will be greatly appreciated.

For the record myself and another Mersey user group have both contacted the relevant authority with responsibility for the weir and are awaiting their response regarding the tree trunk lodged there at Victoria Park. Hopefully this will soon be removed and both our groups will be able to resume our usual activities when water levels return to normal.

24th August 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd August 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Sunday Phil Brown enjoyed a day session at Appleton, setting up in a swim where with space being at a premium, he decided to fish only one rod. He was rewarded with three carp, the biggest at 19-4-0 caught using a PVA mesh bag containing twelve free offering per fish at about 50yards. The man can't keep away as he was there again the following day where he kicked off his session with a fourteen pounder after first picking up rubbish left by irresponsible users of this popular facility. This was followed by another carp, one lost, and the largest roach Phil had ever seen. Unfortunately as he unhooked it in the water it jumped and escaped.

Andy Corr enjoyed his session on the Weaver Navigation on Sunday where he commented that it was nice to see the stretch which is becoming more popular full of other members. Andy ended up with around 10lbs of roach plus a couple of skimmers. This fishery is well worth a visit with easy parking and thanks to our dedicated volunteer comfortable pegs.

Steve and Martin Cockroft visited one of Warrington Anglers outpost venues this past week, the Earl of Harringtons Club shared pool at their Derwent Valley Fishery where we have a reciprocal use agreement with our adjacent River Derwent stretch. They had an enjoyable session catching some nice carp and a bonus tench.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal on the Farm Road stretch. It was a low weight affair and the winner Bob Fitzpatrick who drew in the works caught roach and perch on pinkie and maggot for 2-9-9.  Just a cat's whisker behind was match organiser Jimmy Byrne fishing the same method with a weight of 2-9-5. It really doesn't get much closer! Fourteen anglers turned out.

Catches of interest to members of The Anguilla Club would be the two eels landed in last week's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook of 3-11-0 apiece caught by both Chris Wray and John Ashwin fishing the middle of the canal. A strange catch by Bob Fitzpatrick in the same event was a 4lbs terrapin!

There is a working party at Sandiway Lakes on Sunday 28th meet in first car park on the small lake around 8-30am. Any members who would like to help will be greatly appreciated.

Just a reminder that if you are visiting our Shocklach Fishery that parking is on the concrete at the side of the farm building and not on the grass! Also please ensure that you check that the gates are securely closed.

9th August 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Dan Henshaw this week visited the Mount at Buckley, he set his stall out for carp using a 16mm Krill popped up boilie. This was presented over a spod mix roughly 4 rod lengths out on a multi rig and size 8 barbless hook, He was eventually rewarded with a lovely common. Dan did not mention the size but in the photo, it looked like a double figure fish, well done Dan.

Stuart Atherton had a session on the river Mersey with his lure rod this week, his baits of choice were small 3 or 4 cm creature baits from FFS lures. Stuart used 1 of his ultra-light casting rods matched to a BFS type reel this was loaded with 10lb braid with a 6lb flouro leader. He had a few samples of Perch a Chub and a nice little Jack pike.

Stephen Spann made another visit to Woodshaw Reservoir, this water is one of the gems on our venue list as anyone who has visited this water will testify. He fed micro pellets and ground bait with expander`s over the top. His bait choice seemed to work as well, with several Crucian Carp up to 2lbs lots of Roach and what he describes has a weird looking Goldfish.

This week`s Mersey Match on Mersey Walk saw an improvement in weight in a few areas possibly down to the fresh water in the week, however the water was extremely low again. Quite a lot of Roach turned up in most swims with the two winning anglers catching some quality samples in their head-to-head battle on pegs 57 & 59. The outcome was Harry Billing and Martin Lenihan tying for first place with 11lbs 13oz. Ray Boden was third with 10lbs 8oz and filling the last position was Chris Wray who has currently hit a vein of form, all anglers fished pole and maggots with Chris adding a few skimmers on feeder.

This week`s disabled & over 60`s Match on Woodshaw saw local expert Joe Garry just edge out Ray Boden for first place when he put 15lbs 13oz on the scales to Ray`s 15lbs 2oz. Both men used caster & maggot to catch Crucian`s Skimmers and Roach whereas Mike Worley fished paste to catch 8 Crucian`s and a feeder caught bream for 12lbs 4oz. Bob Fitzpatrich occupied fourth place with 10lbs 9oz from the disabled peg.

Just a reminder to members who are night fishing, you must make toilet provisions for yourself and must take it home; you will be asked to leave if you have failed to prepare for this situation and a bailiff carries out a check

2nd August 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

We start this week`s blog on the banks of Big Sandiway with Andrew and James two of our committee members, after traveling to the Mount at Buckley and finding it completely full this was the venue they ended up at. Both anglers after doing a quick check settled down in their chosen swims for a 48hr session. Their intended quarry unfortunately did not appear, but they were both rewarded with a Tench each James reports his Tench weighing in at 8 lbs, but he was upstaged by Andrew with a specimen of 9.5 lbs.

Match organiser Jimmy Byrne took a break from match fishing and decided on a trip to the river Dee at Worthenbury. Jimmy chose to fish the stick float and maggots which were donated to him the day before by the match lads trying to offload their old bait. Jimmy put all these free maggots to effective use and ended his session with a net full of Roach, Dace & Grayling approximately 100 in total, he advised driving with caution if you visit this stretch because the track is in a poor condition.

The blog wouldn`t be the same without an extract from the Ken & Dave`s memoirs and this time they come from High Leigh Fisheries. Both anglers fished the left-hand bank by the second island, they alternated between waggler and method feeder. Ken had twenty fish, nothing over 6 oz made up of 18 Perch, 1 Roach and a Rudd. Dave had 6 Perch to 9 oz and 2 Roach to 6 oz, but he did manage a 10 lbs 2 oz Carp on the method feeder after losing 3 fish.

With the river Mersey this week carrying a bit of extra water from the recent rain the expectation of some fish was in the angler`s minds. The weights were slightly better overall from the week before, with the best coming from peg 22 where Martin Kettle weighed 11 lbs 4 oz from the same peg that won 2 weeks earlier. Ray Boden managed second spot with 10 lbs 5oz, followed by Kevin Ashurst and Chris Wray taking the last 2 spots all anglers caught Roach, Perch & Dace on pole fished maggot.

Roy Rogers aka the Cheshire Cowboy was top gun in this week`s match, fishing next to the ICI work`s bridge. He was closely followed by George Barber (The Breadman) who was by the conker tree`s rushes. Alan Brown and Jeff Stoll filled the last 2 spots with the latter catching two 12 oz Roach and a Skimmer from the track.
