28th June 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Ken Hewitt chose the river Mersey to wet a line this week deciding on the Kingsway stretch. Using a 7-meter whip and red maggots in a 6 ft deep swim ken put together about 30 fish, all Perch apart from 1 Roach. Ken managed a few specimens in his catch 3 Perch were around the 2 lbs mark, while another 4 were around 1 lb. Ken also reports he tried to tempt a rather large Perch that was lurking in the depths that he estimated was 4-5 lbs but unfortunately his double maggot did not entice the stripey.

Tim Poulter has been busy this past fortnight visiting 3 of our fisheries, first on the cards was Statham for Roach where 20 roach were obliging and as usual where the fish are getting caught, so the Pike turn up for an easy meal. This is when Tim connected with a toothy predator that interception a Roach destined for the landing net. Next on the list was our small pools in the wigan area, starting with Mowpin which is a small picturesque pool that's full of Rudd. Tim having caught Rudd and a nice carp decide on a short mot move to D pool where he helped himself to a nice Chub. Now onto his last venue and this time one of my favourites, the river Dee at Shocklach. Although Tim reports the river being very low, he still managed to catch some small Chublets and a nice Grayling.

Dave Tomkinson was back on Grey Mist yet again this week, again fishing for Tench he set the bar even higher when the scales read 9 lbs 6oz. This was backed up with an 8 lbs male and a 7 lb male at the time of the message.

Antony Rough fished the Dee at Worthenbury this week where float fishing with maggots and corn produced lots of chub, a few Brown Trout and 2 Grayling.

This week`s Match on the T&M canal at Billinge saw Al Faulkner take the honours from an end peg by the marina mouth. Al caught skimmers, Roach and Perch for a weight of 7 lbs 8drs just over a pound clear of Chris Wray who snared a Perch of 1.5 lbs in his catch, both anglers fished pole at 12.5 metres with maggot and Pinkie hook baits.

This week`s Mersey match was held on Victoria Park where some pegs were expected to struggle in the low water conditions. Top rod and veteran international Harry Billing drew well for his first match on the river this year when he pulled favoured peg 8 from the bag, 5 hours later and 14lbs 8oz of mainly silver Bream were place on the scales to give him his 1st Mersey win one of many I`m sure. Ray Boden fishing end peg 34 another fancied peg took 2nd spot with a mixed bag of fish on pole with a bonus Bream on feeder. Jimmy Byrne and Neil Davies made up the last 2 places from pegs 14 and 16.

*Please note carp are starting to spawn on some lakes DO NOT cast to these fish and do not cross or remove tape that is there to prevent you fishing or you will be dealt with by the Management Committee*

21st June 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

200 LBS OF CARP AND NOT A COMMERCIAL IN SITE

Yes, that’s right 200lbs 8oz was the total weight of the 9 carp that Aaran Davidson landed out of the 10 runs he had last week. Aaran had 9 Mirror Carp ranging from 18lbs 4oz all the way up to an impressive 26lbs 12oz. He was using a spinner rig, size 6 Krank x hook and 15lb boom hook length with a sticky manilla active Wafter. He used an oldish method of baiting up with a throwing stick about 15 to 20 manilla Boilies at a time to try and get the fish more confident going round picking single baits up instead of feeding on big patches of bait. Aaran has been fishing Appleton Reservoir a long time and in his own words “it was a session of a lifetime”.

Simon Tonkinson fished at Statham pool this past week where fishing Ledger'd pellet over free offerings saw him catch an 8lbs 3oz carp and also a 4lbs pike that snaffled a roach that he was reeling in.

Now that the river season as started again Tony Baron & Peter Parkins decided the river Dee was their 1st trip. Peter had 10 Chub ranging from 3lb to 4 1/2lbs and1 Grayling around 1lb. This particular peg over the last couple of years seems to hold a shoal of large chub. Tony fished further downstream round the bend and had around 50 Dace and 2 Chub, the best of which was around 2 lbs. Normally this peg would be alive with dace but it was a bit of a struggle at first to start catching red maggots was bait of choice for both anglers.

Stephen Bewes settled on the river Wyre for a session of lure fishing, using his own home-made surface lures he managed to temp 8 Chub weighing up to 4lbs +.

We have had a report this week from Mathew Gower who along with his son Charles age 9 took a visit to Grey Mist this week. Setting their stall out with a pineapple pop-up boilie it was Charles that who came up trumps with a fish he will remember for a long time and one most would be proud of. The fish in question was a 5 Lbs eel, this fishery has quite a reputation for big eels and I bet this one put up quite a scrap.

This week saw the introduction of a set of full gates being fitted to the Grey Mist access road, these were put in place to reduce the number of non-members that frequent the fishery. Has with all other gates and barriers this new gate must be closed every time it is used there will be no excuses accepted.

The 1st match of the new season was a bit of a hit and miss affair with some anglers catching well while others struggled for bites. The river was very low with very little flow and with the clouds clearing to bright sun in the afternoon fishing became more difficult. Jon Green was clear winner in the end with a catch of mainly Skimmers, Perch and silver Bream switching between feeder and pole methods to keep fish coming. Neil Buist aka Engine was 2nd with a respectable 10 lbs 5oz with a similar catch 21 anglers fished.

This week`s Match on the canal at Daresbury saw Jimmy Byrne in the frame again this time match winner. Draw a peg in a wider section of canal he started fishing at 4 metres catching Roach & silver Bream on Pinkie & Maggot over ground-bait. When bites slowed, he moved out to 12.5 metres where he continued to catch 40 more Roach and 3 Skimmers before slowing in the last hour. Al Faulkner was 2nd with 50 fish on Pinkie fishing next to the bridge.

14th June 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

My 1st point of this week`s blog unfortunately is a warning to anglers who insist on breaking the rules.

Rule 13 No tents, fires, disposable barbeques, single use bottles or cans/tins/plastic packaging etc are allowed on any of our fisheries

Rule 23 No alcohol, drugs (other than those medically prescribed to that member), solvents, or other like substances are to be taken or consumed on our fisheries. Similarly, persons under the influence of these will be in breach of this rule and will in both instances face expulsion.

Myself and Head Bailiff spent a day this week filling a 7-tonne skip with 80% of exactly these items along with un-mentionable items and approximately 15% of items brought onto site to dump this is not acceptable and you will be dealt with severely if caught there are no excuses bailiffs have been asked to be more vigilant.

Back to what this blog should be about, David Tomkinson was back on Grey Mist this week where once again he sacked up on Tench eager for his bait. Using pellet feeder tactics with homemade boilies he added another 16 of these fish to his tally 2 over the 8lbs bracket, I may need to bend his ear for some tips.

Dave Garner and companion Ken were out on Woodshaw, Ken fished peg 4 catching Roach & Perch to 8oz using pole & feeder. Dave opted for Wagler & Feeder and ended with a real mixed bag of Roach, Skimmers, Perch & Chub all in all a pleasant 6 hours fishing in has Dave put it superb surroundings.

This brings me to the best bit the magical 16th has I wright this there is a tinge of sadness that I may not be able to fish the 1st day of the river season due to other commitments or even the 1st association match. I will however make time to have a wander along the Mersey at some point, good luck to all who have been waiting because of an outdated Law to fish again.

The Disabled & over 60`s match this week was at Daresbury where plenty of Roach and silver Bream were in most catches. Richie Baker also managed a couple of big Skimmers a pound each helping himself too top spot, The ever-consistent Jimmy Byrnes taking 2nd place with 50 small silver fish and a small Skimmer. Top 3 weights came from behind the laboratory`s with best bates being bread & Pinkie

7th June 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Jim Gannon this week took time out of his unstoppable commitment to voluntary work on mainly our stretches of the river Mersey. Chosen venues were firstly Appleton Reservoir where fishing with maggots on the hook with a feeder was his approach; bites were hard to come by at first but pretty soon he was catching Perch to about 6ozs. In all he finished his session with about 30 fish all Perch with 1 solitary Roach. Next up a few days later and Statham Pool was the venue this time fishing a Waggler while drip feeding maggots, the Roach this time were very obliging with again about 30 small fish being caught with a bonus 5lbs pike that mugged a Roach on the way to the net.

Niel Trainor also fished Appleton this week with fishing buddy Rob Lappin this time in search of Carp, 5am was the start time and they settled down and watched fish rolling in their swims. After a few hours Niel`s reel screamed off, it felt a good fish. 10 minutes into the fight they finally got a glimpse “wow what a fish and a certain PB”. He has only been fishing a year and couldn`t believe it! 25lb 3oz. Soon after Robs alarms sounded and another fish on, this time at 20lb 2oz carp a great fish and a great 4-hour session pink Pop-ups and Bumbleberry Goo the bait of choice.

Keith Starkey another regular on the working parties swapped his spade for his fishing rod and tackled Grey Mist in a different way for a change, fishing with micro pellets and an orange pellet hair-rigged he was rewarded by the fishing gods with a 21lbs 1oz Mirror Carp.

James Lavelle fished Rixton this week and after assessing his chosen swim decided on a spot just off some Lillie pads where he found a clear spot the size of a dinner plate. After placing around 30 boilies here the dinner bell was rung with the main course being a white pop-up on a Chod rig. Fish were showing straight away over the feed area but it wasn`t until 4:30 am that his sounded, James connected with the fish but feared it may be a Bream with the sluggish fight but as soon as the fish saw the net it took off. A 10-minute battle ensued with the outcome being a 22lb old Mirror carp lying in the net.

Bob Fitzpatrick was the eventual winner this week on the Bridgewater canal at Pickering`s bridge when a Bream swung the scales easily in his favour. The rest of the field were all very close with a low weight return, Alan Brown needed just 1-14-10 for second place his catch was all Roach caught on bread & pinkie. John Ashwin was a close 3rd just 2ozs separating them John`s catch made up of small Roach also on pinkie`s.

There was a match at Woodshaw this week where local rod Joe Garry took the honours with a net made up of Skimmers and Roach but unlike the other framers, Jimmy Byrnes and Ray Boden he managed to include 6 chunky Crucians. The winning method was pole fished maggot & castor over groundbait fished between 4 to 8 meters.
