Great news that last week the Environment Fishery Team following a successful fish rescue released 500lbs of roach, skimmers, plus a few rudd into the Trent & Mersey Canal at Northwich. Many thanks folks, much appreciated.

The only carp that I have seen reported this past week was by Grant Blochlinger who was pleased to be 'off the mark' with his first carp of the year after only a brief two-hour session on The Mount. Rumour has it that Big Sandiway has produced four or five carp along with some decent pike, but nothing from the adjacent smaller 17acre fishery.

This week's Sunday Mersey Match Series was cancelled due to high river levels but back on this coming Sunday.

On Monday our Disabled & Over 60's match took place on the Bridgewater Canal pegged either side of Hough's Bridge. With the recent storms and highly chocolate coloured canal it was not too hard to predict that it would be a low weight event.  Following on from his previous weeks success match organiser Jimmy Byrne took first place again with fourteen small roach on bread for 0-13-0. Likewise, Al Faulkner was 'ounced-out' again this week but hung on to his second-place win with ten roach and a couple of perch for 0-12-0. Nine mad keen anglers fished.

HALTON PLANNING OBJECTION:  We have had several previous attempts (once by Halton Borough Council in 2002 and lately a second attempt by developers to take away our use by Warrington Anglers Association members of Red Brow Lane that gives the only reasonable access to fish the Bridgewater Canal which we have leased and enjoyed for decades.

ALL MEMBERS PLEASE REGISTER YOUR OBJECTION to this Planning Application Number 22/00034/REM.  Application for the approval of reserved matters (access, appearance, landscaping, layout, and scale) of planning permission 20/00337/OUTEIA which has been submitted to Halton Council for the erection of 108 houses adjacent to Red Brow Lane at Daresbury. We are not objecting to the housing development BUT what we must object to is the proposed closure of Red Brow Lane, Daresbury, which has been used by our members for access by motor vehicle to fish the Bridgewater Canal at Red Brow Underbridge for countless years. Members can object or comment online to the closure by sending your email to dev.control@halton.gov.uk by 03.03.2022 or in writing to Halton Borough Council, Municipal Building, Kingsway, Widnes WA8 7QF. Please make your objections as soon as possible. Many thanks everyone.  

Members are advised to avoid fishing the Bridgewater Canal on Saturday 26^th February 2022 between Marsland Road Bridge and Oldfield Brow Bridge at Sale as the annual Trafford Rowing Club Head Race is taking place between 6-30am and 6pm.

I had a brief chat to member Shaun Conner at Appleton Reservoir on Sunday when despite the muddy conditions he was quite happy with his catch of a 16lb mirror, especially at this time of the year, likewise his mate Matthew Fox who landed one of a similar size. Roach are still feeding there as Ed Singleton reported who fished a small feeder and double pinkie for a net of eighteen fish, a couple around 12ounces.

This week's Sunday Mersey Match Series was drawn on the Victoria Park section of the river, and was another low weight result as anglers struggled for bites. Ray Boden was the winner with just three roach taken on feeder and maggot for 1-1-0. He 'ounced-out' the runner-up Jimmy Byrne who despite having five roach to Ray's three they only sent the scale needle round to 1lb exactly. Eleven anglers turned out.

On Monday our Disabled & Over 60's match took place on the Bridgewater Canal pegged either side of Walton Bridge. After last week's decent looking weights, the fish this week were definitely not in anything like feeding frenzy, more like on a diet.  Still, a match is a match and everyone taking part likes to win which in this case was match organiser Jimmy Byrne with eight small perch taken on worm plus a few roach on bread for 0-15-0.  He reversed his first-place loss by just an ounce the previous day by doing the same to Al Faulkner who weighed in 0-14-0 for second place. Fourteen anglers fished.

The online membership renewal option which was switched off last week will be available again sometime on Friday from our Warrington Anglers Association homepage.

Mark Webster was more than happy with his first carp of 2022 from Grey Mist, a cracking 27lbs mirror. He fished a solid bag and 10mm wafter in the middle which was more or less weed free. Nice one Mark.

On his first visit to the Mount at Buckley new member Michael Griffiths had a good few hour's roach fishing this past weekend despite the high-water conditions which are an annual 'feature'. Worry not Michael it gets more comfortable as the weather improves. The quality roach in this all-round fishery can go to well over 2lbs.

Retired member Richard Smallman reports that his morning exercise along the Bridgewater Canal is now more enjoyable thanks to his light spinning rod Christmas present. Last week over four days his total catch was eleven perch to just over a pound and a small jack-pike. Beats just walking😊

The green colour of the Bridgewater Canal in the vicinity of Red Brow underbridge is due to a dye being used to trace water leaks in and around the structure. When I visited there was a fair flow of green water gushing from the banking adjacent to the Moore side of the bridge. But fish topping in their newly tinted environment and hopefully gave some measure of protection from the cormorant pests which are having a detrimental effect on many of our fisheries.

This week's Mersey Match Series on Sunday was drawn again on the Mersey Walk section of the river, and was one of the worst results of the season and a massive drop from last week's winning weight of 20lbs. On the day it was no big surprise due to most pegs being under water and a heavily flooded river raging through.  Paul Field was the winner with 0-9-8 made up of a single roach and two tiny eels caught on feeder and maggot. John Green was in second place with two tiny eels for a weight of 0-5-10. Twelve anglers turned out.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Beech Road. The weights look really great but the fish were tightly shoaled up in the region of London Bridge and it was a case of feast or famine and the luck of the draw. The winner Ray Boden was pegged on the Beech Road side of the bridge and his all-roach catch taken on bread and maggot sent the scales needle round to 11-7-0. George Hollis was the runner-up drawing on the right of the winner for an all roach catch of 10-13-0. Nineteen anglers fished.

Due to the membership booklets being posted out to members during the next week or so the online membership renewal option is temporarily closed. This doesn't affect new member applications.

I really love 'kids first catches' which bring back many fond memories of when I began taking my three-year old daughter fishing. However undoubtedly this week the star is Thomas Whitehead who has been introduced to our sport by his father Garry. Thomas who will be three in April was enjoying a session lure fishing on the Bridgewater Canal in Moore opposite the post office. His dad cast in for him but Thomas was doing all the hard work of reeling in when the Savage Gear pulse-tail lure was hit by a toothy predator and it was game on. After a few anxious minutes the youngster saw the result of his efforts lying on the unhooking mat, his first pike, and hopefully just one of many. Well done Thomas.

New member Graeme Edwards enjoyed his first outing to a WAA fishery when he fished the River Alyn at Cooks Bridge stating the it was "The best fishing trip I've ever had." He lost count of how many grayling he caught which included some nice specimens and his first ever trout.

John Seymour enjoyed his first trip to Appleton Reservoir where fishing a small groundbait feeder with micro pellets and maggots added he ended up with fourteen roach, best about 12ounce. Andy Corr also managed a similar catch on his session last Sunday.

On Sunday Andy Humphreys also had a few hours on the Alyn when he ended his session with a catch of about ten grayling, three chub, and a couple of trout. Best fish of both species around the 1lb mark. He set up a little chubber float trotting through using single or double maggot.

This week's Mersey Match Series on Sunday was drawn on the Mersey Walk section of the river, and saw Jonathan Green draw noted the bream peg number 74. As would be expected he fished a groundbait feeder and red maggot to secure a convincing win with a net of four bream and a few roach for a weight of 20-10-0. Notably it is the second-best weight of the season behind 38lbs from the very same peg. Second placed Bud Lea also fished a feeder for an all roach catch for 4-7-0. Eighteen members fished. Next week after an absolute age the match is at Beech Road which during the match heyday was probably the second choice of canal venue.

The popular Monday Disabled & Over 60's match took place again this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge. The winner George Barber aka 'The Breadman' drew next to Hough's Bridge and fished the pole and predictably 'the white stuff' for an all roach catch of 5-3-0. Neil Buist aka 'The Engine' took the runner-up spot with his net of roach and a bonus hybrid for 4-9-0. Alan Faulkner included a perch of 2lbs taken on worm in his third placed catch. Sixteen anglers fished. 

Anybody wishing to renew online should do so as soon as possible as we close this option when we start sending out the 2022 membership booklets anytime soon. So, if you cannot renew online, you know the reason. This doesn't affect new member applications.
