25th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Mersey Match Series on Sunday was back on the Mersey Walk section of the river, and thankfully catches improved. Ian Titchard who last week was in third place but as others hadn't entered the main pools money, he took the main pot with only 15ounces. Well, this week he left nothing to chance as he earned outright it by taking first place from peg 67 with a weight of 5-5-0. It was an all-roach net taken on feeder and maggot. Jonathan Green was the runner-up only ounces behind the winner with 5-2-0 of mainly roach using both feeder and bolo methods. A few chub and bream have been showing up in practice catches this past week but not in the match. Nineteen members fished.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal was this week pegged either side of Houghs Bridge. New member Paul Ashton who fished his first match of the series last week showed he is a force to be reckoned with this week when he blitzed the opposition with a winning weight of 4-1-0. He drew the second peg on the Stockton Heath side of the bridge and fished pole and bread punch throughout for an all-roach catch. Jeff Stoll pegged next to the winner was fourth last week with 1-15-0 but this week took second place with the same weight. Seventeen anglers fished.

Avian flu has been confirmed at Ackers Pit and our bailiff Mike has been advising members that they should not be touching dead or sick birds under any circumstances. It will no doubt be on many fisheries throughout the UK as it is reintroduced every year by migrating birds and is spread by bird-to-bird contact. It could be anywhere so simply be aware and if you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese, or ducks) you should report them to the Defra helpline 03459 335577.

This is vitally important to all members that they object to the Planning Application Number 22/00034/REM.  Application for the approval of reserved matters (access, appearance, landscaping, layout, and scale) of planning permission 20/00337/OUTEIA which has been submitted to Halton Council for the erection of 108 houses adjacent to Red Brow Lane at Daresbury. We are not objecting to the housing development BUT what we must object to is the proposed closure of Red Brow Lane, Daresbury, which has been used by our members for access by motor vehicle to fish the Bridgewater Canal at Red Brow Underbridge for countless years. Members can object or comment online to the closure by sending your email to dev.control@halton.gov.uk by 03.03.2022 or in writing to Halton Borough Council, Municipal Building, Kingsway, Widnes WA8 7QF. Please make your objections as soon as possible. Many thanks everyone.

Working Parties this week: - Thursday 27rd January Grey Mist 10-30am start, Saturday 29th January Big Sandiway 9am start. All members are more than welcome to attend.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who turned out to the Rixton Clay Pits working party on Sunday, another very productive session, more peg and pathway works carried out.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days. Alternatively, you can post to Warrington Anglers Association PO. Box 71, Warrington WA1 1LR where mail is collected weekly.

I really appreciate any catch reports from members, especially at this time of the year when they are understandably few and far between with there being not many anglers out fishing. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238

18th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Mersey Match Series on Sunday was fished on the Victoria Park section of the river, and I will keep my mouth shut in future after the outcome following my comment in last week's column, I would put money on it that the weights are much better next week. Well, they definitely weren't and Jim Gannon needed only 1-11-0 made up of nine small roach boosted on the day by an additional bonus half-pounder to clock up his first win of the year. At the draw he wanted either peg 16 or 34 and happily settled for his first choice where he set-up a small groundbait feeder alternating between red maggot or double pinkie.  His choices of peg were right on the button as second placed Alan Morris drew peg 34 where he caught half a dozen small roach for 1-0-0. Neither of these had entered the main pool so third placed Ian Titchard with 15ounces took the main money with more being added to the section winner's purse. Sixteen members fished.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal was pegged between Walton Bridge and Walton Road Bridge. Alan Clarke notched up his second win in the past three weeks with a net of roach taken on the pole, the majority on punched-bread and a few on pinkie. Alan Faulkner, a relative newcomer to this match series, having only recently qualified as a sexagenarian took the runner-up spot again this week with 2-4-0 of roach on bread. Alan sat for most of the match without a single bite but with only fifty-five minutes to go he caught his first roach and it was game-on. Certainly, the weights were decidedly better than the previous day on the Mersey. Seventeen anglers fished.

Once again, many thanks to the volunteers who attended working parties at Rixton Claypits, Moore Quarry, and Big Sandiway. Lots of essential work carried out including pegs, dangerous tree removal, and fencing.

Working Parties this week on Sunday 23rd January: - Rixton Clay Pits from 9am onwards. All members are more than welcome to attend.

There will be a big job coming up shortly as we have ordered the materials to install Otter Stop Fencing around Grey Mist. Masses of work to be done including ground clearance and some tree removal, mainly crack-willow. The Mist has also been suffering from high water levels for some time due to inadequate drainage which is being addressed by BIFFA. If you are interested in ensuring a secure future for this popular fishery please get in touch and email me your details.

11th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Mike Pritchard on his weekly Saturday angling escape day went to his favourite Dead Length section of the Bridgewater Canal. He started off on bread punch catching roach from the off eventually changing to pinkie and adding a few perch. He had been feeding a swim with casters which produced half a dozen better stamp roach towards the end of his session. He ended up with around forty fish caught on conventional rod and line, that was before he realised his keepnet was being attacked by a pike. A few sweeps of his landing net produced a pike around 12lbs witnessed by another angler who was targeting these toothy predators without success. It was released and Mike started to pack away his gear and was ready to leave when the other angler was into a fish. Eventually landed and on the unhooking mat it turned out to be the very same pike. When unhooking the fish another treble was found in its throat which thankfully was removed and the pike safely returned to the water.

The Mersey Match Series on Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk section of the river, and guess what, no change as the river really was carrying extra water plus! Again given the prevailing conditions it was another all-feeder match with predictably very low weights with bites being few and far between. Alan Faulkner only cast his feeder in at 10metres to catch fifteen small roach on maggot to win with a weight of 1-6-0.  Chris Wray took the runner-up spot with 1-1-0. Sixteen members fished. I would put money on it that the weights are much better next week.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal pegged from Hough's Bridge towards Moore. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne after a few weeks in the shadows was back on top form easily blitzing his previous week's 0-1-11 section win with a winning weight of 7-0-8. He fished pole and mainly bread punch to catch a hundred roach plus a few perch on pinkie. He stopped Alan Faulkner getting a double, but Alan wasn't too disappointed to take second place with 4-14-0 of roach on bread punch. Seventeen anglers fished.

Another lot of hard graft by the working party volunteers at Rixton Claypits on Sunday with overhanging branches removed and peg improvements. More dates will be published in in the next week or so and remember every member is more than welcome to attend and you might even enjoy the experience, the banter, and pick up information in the company of like-minded anglers.

Working Parties this week on Sunday 16th January: - Big Sandiway meet near the lock-up 9am and Moore Quarry meet in the car park at 10am. All members are more than welcome to attend.

4th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th January 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Marley Preston has started 2022 well with a carp of 20-2-0 caught from Grey Mist on New Years Day on the usual 'secret bait'. He was out again on the fishery the following day and was rewarded with another carp of 21-8-0. A cracking start for this keen young angler who now has a two fish head start over his dad Mark😊

Steve Rogers tried out his new drop-shot spinning rod on Monday with a short two-hour session on the Bridgewater Canal at Dunham. The Christmas present wasn't exactly tested to breaking point but Steve was more than pleased with his brace of perch which he reckoned both were just under a pound caught on a small green fish lure.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hilltop Road. Alan Clarke started 2022 off well by clocking up his first win in these match series with a weight of 6-1-0. Alan only needed two fish which just happened to be a brace of bream that fell to bread punch. In fact, it turned out to be a bream or bust event as second placed George Barber aka 'The Breadman' put his single slab on the scales sending the needle round to 3-15-0. Third place was another single bream and then weights plummeted to 2oz for fourth which I must mention was taken by well-known angler Alan Faulkner who recently qualified by way of age was fishing his first match with 'the lads'. The angler with the most fish, three small roach, was Jimmy Byrne who took a section win with 0-1-10. It can only get better! Sixteen anglers fished.

The Mersey Match Series on Sunday was fished on the Victoria Park section of the river, again it was carrying extra water which set the scene for an all-feeder match. Ray Boden was the winner with a catch of twenty roach and perch for 2-8-0 taken on feeder and maggot. Ade Green hung on to his runner-up spot from the previous week with 2-1-0 on the same method. Eighteen members fished.

Ian Brody has organised another working Party at Rixton Claypits on Sunday 9th January starting a 9am. Any help is appreciated if just for an hour or so. All welcome.
