29th June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A morning session on Grey Mist turned out to be not at all too bad for member Gareth Jones when he was rewarded with a cracking specimen tench of 10-4-0 along with one of 8-8-0 plus three further fish around 6-8-0. Phil Brown reports a productive morning session last Thursday catching three tench, biggest 7-10-0 taken on mini pop-up and fake pellet close in. He was back on the Mist again this Tuesday but this time enjoying a float session catching loads of roach and a tench. His comment, what more can you want sums it up for me on a water that I have fished from the age of 4 years being taken there by my grandfather for my very first fishing trip. A catch by Elias Jones of small roach which included six hand-sized tench taken on pole and soft pellet in the margin bodes well for the future. For those that enquire about the lilies, it has been treated a number of times up to last year and further spraying is planned this year.

I had a trip (no gear) to the Weaver Navigation on Tuesday evening and it is looking fabulous, certainly the dredging work above the Frodsham Swing Bridge is having little if any effect on our stretch. Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner were there this past week and complimented the lads who had done a cracking job on the access and pegs. I think Dave was somewhat surprised when I informed him it was all carried out by a 'one man band' who wishes to remain anonymous. Anyway, the lads, using running line float and tip methods saw Ken with six perch to 1.5lbs and four roach whilst Dave started with a couple of small roach and a cracker of 2.2lbs on maggot feeder, a bream of 3lbs plus, and an eel around the same weight. On Monday Ian Marsden in a three our session reports twenty-eight fish, skimmers to 1.25lbs, roach to 8oz, a couple of rudd, plus an eel.

Dave Brettle enjoyed another productive night session on Appleton reservoir landing four carp to 20lbs. David Maine's morning session on Thursday saw him targeting the roach stocks using a small groundbait feeder and double maggot. He left his keepnet at home but reckoned that he ended up with around twenty plus roach and a tench around three pounds.

The Mersey Match Series on Sunday saw another member clock-up his first win on the river when Nick Roberts drew peg 74 how was he to know he would be sat on a shoal of bream in his swim. All credit to Nick he capitalised on his luck evidenced when the scales came round to his peg and he put seven bream in the weigh-net with the biggest at 7-15-0 along with skimmers, roach, and perch for a runaway win with 38-6-0 all caught on worm and feeder tactics. Alan Faulkner drew a peg at the opposite end of the match to take second place with 8-5-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. Twenty-two members fished.

Thankfully sport picked up for the weeks Disabled & Over 60's Monday match on Woodshaw Reservoir. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the winner 9lbs exactly made up of twenty skimmers, roach, and perch taken on pole loose-feeding red maggot. John Ashwin, a newcomer to the match series took second place with 8-4-0 of mainly skimmers caught on groundbait and maggot. Seventeen fished.

Please note there is a working party organised at Rixton Claypits on Saturday 3rd July starting at 11am for those member volunteers who like a lie-in. If you fancy helping simply turn up and you will be made very welcome.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days. 22nd June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The 16th June which heralded the opening of the river coarse fish season has been enjoyed by many who have waited ninety days since closure on the 15th March to be able to enjoy this branch of angling again. I was amongst them, although not an early riser as there were a number of anglers already on pegs when I arrived at around 6-30am to fish the Weaver Navigation. The pegs had been overhauled and improved by our lone volunteer on this fishery who wishes to remain anonymous. I fished with this mystery man who was on the water an hour before sunrise! We both fished the same method, pole at around 10metres feeding a mix of groundbait, micro-pellets, and red maggots. I ended up with a dozen fish made up of skimmers and a couple of roach but was beaten into second place by our friend who included a decent bream and skimmers, losing a tench at the net.

Ade Green and Jim Gannon who both carry out lots of work repairing pegs and keeping the banks strimmed on the Mersey had a day off on Wednesday where Ade had thirty-eight fish mainly around 3oz but nothing big on feeder, pole, and reg maggots. Jim fished peg 34 starting his session earlier and had perch, dace, and eleven bream ranging from 4 to 6lbs on ground-bait feeder and maggot. Mike Pritchard also fished the River Mersey from peg five at Victoria Park on Saturday and caught on both waggler and ground-bait feeder tactics and maggot. He ended up with twenty-eight fish made up of 5 roach, 5 dace, 3 chub around 8oz, the remainder being perch.

Jim Griffiths fished the River Vyrnwy at Llanymynech on Friday for a few hours and was happy to report no minnows but caught twenty-one fish on trotted maggot. He had a couple of chub around 1.5lbs, the rest dace plus a small trout but lost a big brownie at the net. It was the first time he had fished the river for twenty years and commented, "It is as I remembered a stunning bit of river."

Gareth Wright enjoyed his first visit to the River Alyn catching trout, chub, and dace on the fly. Next time he reckons a shorter rod would be easier but was certainly taken with the river.

Gary Hillyer had a fantastic night session on Appleton Reservoir this last week ending up with eight carp. On Saturday new member Fero Hojo was also made up with his first tench from Grey Mist at around 4.5lbs.

Colin Wood had a cracking morning session on Worthington Lakes (number 3) on Monday ending up with nine bream and twenty-five hybrids. Three poachers were removed from this fishery last week where they had dug out pegs where there is no fishing allowed on the nature reserve bank, cut branches from surrounding trees, and even had a dog with them. I really at a loss as to why such people can even think that they are anglers. They are a disgrace to our sport!

On Wednesday three of our committee members enjoyed an overnight session on The Mount at Buckley where they all caught. Paul Rothwell had four carp and a decent bream, Andy Burrows a couple of carp and lost what he reckoned was a much bigger one when it slipped the hook (they don't count), and Jay Makin caught seven carp with the best 15lbs. Phil Brown also enjoyed his session landing a brace of carp.

Sunday saw the first Mersey Series Match of the season drawn at Mersey Walk and fished from peg 45 upwards. Phil Stevens was over the moon when he clocked up his first win on the Mersey with a weight of 13-8-0 made up of three bream, best nudging 5lbs, plus roach and perch taken on the feeder and worm. Geoff Shaw took the runner-up spot with 9-2-0 which included a bream, roach, and perch taken on pole and maggot. Twenty-two fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge but despite hopes being high when members reported reasonable catches during earlier practice sessions it was entirely different on the day, although a slight improvement on the previous week. Ron Durr was the winner with 2-7-0 made up of three skimmers and small roach taken on pole and maggot. Second place went to match organiser Jimmy Byrne with a weight of 2-4-0 of roach, gudgeon, and perch taken on the pole and pinkie over groundbait. Eighteen fished.

15th June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

After a three-month closure Wednesday 16th June is a date, many members have been waiting for, the opening of the river coarse fish season. Quite a number of anglers have been in touch enquiring about river venues so best of luck to you all (myself included). Any reports will be welcome.

Michael White who is one of our dedicated band of volunteers bailiffs managed a few visits to the Bridgewater Canal this past week where he seems to have the uncanny knack when lure fishing to attract really quality perch. On Monday this week he was out again and you've guessed it, another striped beauty lay in his landing net. Certainly, the amount of small silver fish in the canal at present will ensure that this continues.

Robert Mcvinnie enjoyed his session on Grey Mist last weekend landing five tench, the best two were equal at 6-4-0 apiece. Good to see a size variation of smaller fish showing with Ade Green reporting 'baby tench' amongst his catch.

Mike Dabek fished his first session on High Legh Fishery on Saturday and was happy with his catch of newly stocked feisty perch and a hard fighting mirror carp. Thank you, Mike, for your hard work as part of the team that brought this fishery back into use following the fish-kill due to de-oxygenation as a result of rotting leaves.

Andy Corr was back on Appleton Reservoir on Friday where he was rewarded with a cracking mixed net of roach and perch. The carp are back on the feed after spawning on this fishery.

Paul Edwards fished at Sandiway Small Lake on Saturday and reports catching three common carp, biggest 15lbs plus a 4lbs tench. Another member landed a carp of 24lbs during his session. Plenty of fish moving all over the lake.

Ian James fished Cicily Mill on Friday and reports a catch of seven tench, roach, and a solitary bream all taken on a small method feeder and double red maggot fished close-in. Best tench he reckoned was around 4lbs with the bream 2lbs.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury Laboratories and it was more or less a repeat of the previous weeks with match organiser Jimmy Byrne again the winner. He fished the pole and pinkie over groundbait to tempt a pound skimmer plus thirty really tiny roach and a silver bream for 2-1-0. Mike Worley took second place with 1-9-0. Fifteen anglers fished. The other side of Keckwick Bridge and only a few pegs away from the match a pleasure angler would have easily won the event with a surprise tench estimated at 4.5 to 5lbs.

Thanks to members who have abided by the closed off spawning areas on various fisheries this past week or so, well this week as from publication of this column all are now open again. There are a couple of pegs closed on Sandiway where work is taking place and one with a nesting swan. The carp and bream are spawning at Statham Pool today (Tuesday) ideally as it is a small water and difficult to close off areas it should be avoided for a few days.

8th June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

John Dunn fished the Bridgewater Canal just over a week ago at Delph Lane and enjoyed a few hours decent sport following a slow start. He fished the pole alternating between red maggot and punched bread to end up with 'four big black slabs' and some smaller ones. The biggest at just over 4lbs took some landing as it turned out to be hooked in the tail.

Some of our Wigan fisheries have been a bit slow due to spawning, not so Mowpin where Paul Anderton had over a hundred roach on Friday and his son lost a decent fish, probably a carp which snapped him. David Leigh was catching chub at 'D' Pool and then hit the jackpot with a nice common carp.  Although these pools are only small our local bailiff/volunteer team who tend them with great care and devotion assure me that they are full of fish.

Dean Loftus raked a swim at Cicily Mill Pool at 5am on Sunday morning where he fished the pole at 10metres starting off with caster over hemp which brought four tench to the net, losing three in the weed after which sport went quiet at around 9am. A change to maggot brought perch and silvers in company with a brace of bigger tench and a new PB. At 7-6-0. He fished 5am to 1pm ….. the early bird etc?

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick but despite me witnessing shoals of fish along the length just over a week ago during one of my bike rides members found bites were few and far between. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the winner where he fished the pole at over 13metres to find the fish. He tempted three skimmers using single pinkie plus a few tiny roach and a silver bream for 1-13-0. Lenny Dutton was second with 1-5-0 made up of small roach. Nineteen anglers fished.

Thanks to members who have abided by the closed off spawning areas on various fisheries this past week or so. Eight carp have died, more than likely due to spawning stresses at Phoenix Park Lake where a member acted promptly by reporting the matter to the Environment Agency and ourselves.

1st June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st June 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with great sadness that I report that longstanding member of our Warrington Anglers Association management committee Graham Belton passed away peacefully on Monday morning following a long illness. Many of you will also have known him as Magnum a nickname which he acquired during his many years on the match scene where he fished both local match series and National Championships. Aside from this he ran local events including our charity matches. He was always behind the desk at our HQ every Friday evening where he took membership subscriptions, issued night permits and enrolled new members. He definitely enjoyed the banter and was more than a willing participant. He will certainly be missed and our thoughts at this time are with his partner Sylvia, daughter Michelle and family.

A keen youngster, Jack Leicester aged 14years caught a new carp PB from Appleton Reservoir this last weekend, a mirror of exactly 29lbs which fell for a banoffee white pop-up. Simon Oldfield also enjoyed a great evening session on this fishery where he managed two carp in a couple of hours.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was held this week on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery at Wigan where the winner and fishery management grandee Trevor Gray I am reliably informed knows every fish by name. Quite rightly so because Trevor and his team look after all our Wigan fisheries with obvious pride resulting in countless positive comments from visiting members. Trev as he is known drew peg 4 where he fished the pole close-in using his secret special paste concoction to take a clear win with six crucians for a weight of 9-12-0. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up from peg 10 where he fished the pole alternating between soft pellet and maggot for a net of twenty skimmers weighing exactly 7lbs.

Again, the work party volunteers were busy again at Sandiway and High Legh Fishery where they went all-out in order that it can be opened up again. Members will be pleased to know that they can now fish it again with immediate effect but please note parking is at the end of the track before it bends left to the fishery, in effect there is a small walk of 100yds from your car to the fishery gate. Any reports please as we are monitoring the situation following the recent stocking of mainly roach and perch. Two of our veteran anglers Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt have already been testing the potential when they fished there on Tuesday ending up with a few roach and perch plus a small carp. It is early days yet but there were shoals of small fish and carp movement.

Members should note that ignorance of the rules is no excuse so please read your membership booklet and abide by them as they are there to protect our club, members, and our fisheries. All too often members come up with the excuse, 'I didn't know,' well sorry but that simply won't wash. All members must have a signed passport style photograph affixed in their membership book to authenticate their membership.
