31st December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Saturday saw Stuart Peters out on his first fishing trip since early November and he decided on the Ribble at Hurst Green. After two and a half hours without any signs of fish he decided that a move was in order which definitely proved to be the right tactic. The result was that in the next three hours he caught a few grayling with the icing on the cake being four barbel to 6.5lbs and three more that didn't make it to the net.

The Mount at Buckley which produces decent carp catches, tench, bream, perch, and roach over 2lbs is still fishable whilst other waters suffer from high water levels so worth a visit in the New Year. Ian Simms managed to slide in a three-hour session after a hectic Christmas with his family and legered meat for three carp, the best a lower double and not a bite alarm in site. Mike McCarthy had a common of just under 7lbs plus a mirror about the same size on Friday.

Mike Pritchard fished the Bridgewater Canal near Walton Gardens bridge on Saturday with his usual homemade waggler with pinkie and caster to end up with a good 5lbs plus of small roach and a 6lbs pike. To be fair the pike was tangled in his net while looking for an easy meal.

The Saturday members match on the Bridgewater Canal at Boothstown was won by Dave Brookes with a weight of 12-9-0 made up of one perch with the remainder roach to 12ozs. Dave fished the pole with punched bread changing to caster for the better stamp roach. Ray Boden took second place with 10lbs fishing the same method.

A quickly organised match at Mersey Walk saw Eddie Frangleton fishing feeder and maggot tactics take first place with 2-2-0. Stu Gibson was the runner-up with 1-8-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's Match this week at our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery saw Stu Gibson take first place in what was his first appearance on this weekly Monday event. It was indeed a case of bites being few and far between with Stu having only two, missing one but nevertheless the one he hit put a bream weighing 1-14-2 in his net. Alan Brown who took second place had more bites catching small roach and skimmers for 1-13-0.

Well, this is my last weekly column/blog of 2019, and my wife has just poured me a glass of wine, so here's wishing you all a Happy New Year and the very best for 2020. 24th December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Many thanks to the Environment Agency Fisheries Team for their very welcome early Christmas present of 100% true crucian carp and green tench which they stocked into Ackers Pit on Monday. There were approximately three hundred fish around four to six inches in size which were bred and supplied from the EA hatchery at Calverton. They will certainly enhance existing stocks and members sport as they grow into future specimen fish.

Clifford Buckley had a three-hour session over the weekend at Fosters C & D Pools at Wigan. He opted to fish 'D' and caught a chub around the 2.5lbs mark plus a roach, losing two further chub at the net. Not a mega-catch but enjoyable nevertheless being out in the fresh air and winter sunshine.

Ian Beswick reports a total catch of five pike over two-day sessions at the weekend from the Bridgewater Canal at the Kraft Arm. He was encouraged by his first day catch of four fish on Saturday with the best at around six pounds so he went for a repeat performance on Sunday. But he only caught the one fish which turned out to be the biggest at 12-12-0. All fish fell to float-fished dead bait enhanced with his added attractant.

Having not fished Grey Mist for around fourteen years Jess Steele was absolutely made up when on his fifth session there he slid his net under a twenty-pound mirror last week. Onwards and upwards for 2020.

It was a very poor turnout for our Saturday match at Boothstown but the fish are still there with organiser Ray Boden catching over 4lbs in what was more or less a pleasure session. However, it is on again on Saturday, see details below in coming events.

Our Monday Disabled and Over 60's Match on the Bridgewater Canal was drawn this week at Hough's Bridge and saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne a clear winner with almost 3lbs to spare.  Fishing the pole and alternating between punched bread, pinky, and maggot he put together a net of mainly roach plus half a dozen perch for a weight of 8-11-12. Alan Brown drew one peg away from where he won the previous week at Walton Gardens Bridge taking second place with 5-14-8 of small roach. Change of venue next week to our Woodshaw fishery.

On behalf of Warrington Anglers Association, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Don't forget there are not many anglers on the banks at this time of the year so I would really welcome any catch reports good, bad, or indifferent as these help fellow members to plan their outings. 17th December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Mersey Series on Sunday at Victoria Park saw Ade Green take his first win of the year on what was the last river match of 2019 with a weight of 1-6-0 made up of small roach taken on feeder and maggot tactics. Yes, it was hard fishing but despite the scarcity of bites the competition was still as intense and a win is a win! Second place was taken by Roy Everson with 0-14-0. Further matches will be advertised in the New Year.

Our Bridgewater taster match last Saturday at Boothstown produced some really good winter Canal results which saw Bob Campbell putting together a winning catch of skimmers and roach for 11-1-0. Warburtons bread was the bait of the day, liquidised and sieved, with punched bread on the hook.  Dave Brookes took second place with an all roach net weighing in at 9-8-0. It is on again on Saturday, see details below in coming events.

Our Monday Disabled and Over 60's Match on the Bridgewater Canal was drawn this week on the bank opposite the Walton Arms. Winner, Alan Brown who drew a peg adjacent to Walton Gardens Bridge alternated between bread and caster for an all roach catch of 7-4-10. Dave Hill was on the opposite side of the bridge where he fished bread but a change to pinkie brought more fish and second place with a weight of 6-0-2. Eighteen anglers fished.

This is the time of year when there are not many anglers on the banks so I would really welcome any catch reports good, bad, or indifferent as these help fellow members to know how waters are fishing and plan their outings. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

10th December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Bridgewater Canal is still producing pike catches for members with Tom Chambers reporting catching four on a Sunday session at Lymm/Statham area. He was lure fishing and his best fish was around 7 or 8lbs. I mentioned last week that the area between Hough's Bridge and Walton Bridge was full of silver fish where they shoal during winter closely followed there by pike and perch who treat the area as a sort of pop-up 'restaurant.' An angler caught three fish there on Saturday, the best 9lbs on smelt.

Our Mersey Series on Sunday at Mersey Walk as predicted saw bites hard to find however local match ace Jimmy Byrne fishing on a groundbait feeder and maggot managed to tempt two 8oz skimmers plus small roach for a winning weight of 2-14-0. Ed Frangleton and Roy Everson both fishing the same method tied for second place with 1-6-0.

Members have been fishing our WAA controlled Boothstown area of the Bridgewater Canal for some time now with excellent results. Catches of quality roach, skimmers, and tench (the latter during the milder weather) have been reported. Ray Boden fished it this week and had around 10lbs of roach which took a bit of time to come onto the bait but then it was a bite every put in. With this in mind Ray has organised a match for members there for this coming Saturday details below in coming events.

Our Monday Disabled and Over 60's Christmas Match took place on the Bridgewater Canal this week at Hough's Bridge and saw some surprising catches for this time of the year. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne repeated his Mersey success of the previous day with another decisive win. He fished pole at 11metres alternating between bread and pinkie for a mainly roach catch plus a few perch for 9-0-0. Several pegs away on the opposite side of Walton Gardens Bridge Alan Brown put together a net of roach for a weight of 7-4-2 caught using bread, pinkie, with the better stamp fish taking caster. Eighteen fished for a total weight of 77lbs and thanks to Graham Belton everyone received prizes except Graham who couldn't fish.

3rd December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd December 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with great sadness this week that I report that committee member Ian Bradburn passed away on Monday morning. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Ceinwen and family. Funeral arrangements are Walton Crematorium 3-40pm on Friday 13th December 2019. Family flowers only, donations to the Alzheimer's Society.

On Wednesday Neil Plunkett decided on another trip to the Mount where he has enjoyed more than a fair degree of success on previous visits. With the leaf fall now over and the water very clear Neil thought maybe a blank was on the cards. He need not have feared for after a couple of hours of searching around and trying different baits he opted for a method feeder with sweetcorn on the hook which did the trick starting off with a nice bream of a couple of pounds. Seven carp followed between 4lbs and the best just nudging double figures. He packed up at lunch time after yet again having had the venue completely to himself for a great winter's day fishing.

Mike Pritchard fished the Bridgewater near Hough's Bridge on Saturday where annually fish shoal for the winter months. Fishing a light waggler at both his rod tip and the far shelf he ended up with forty roach plus a few rudd, the latter more than likely from the stocking in October last year. He caught mainly on red maggot and pinkie plus a few better stamp roach on caster. During his session there were three separate attacks on his keepnet by pike so you predator anglers fill your boots.

Our Mersey Series on Sunday at Victoria Park was a really hard match which can often be the case on the river at this time of the year, but Jim Gannon quite literally used his loaf and the result produced a win with 1-3-0. He caught twelve roach fishing a groundbait feeder and bread punch. Stu Gibson and Ant Higham drew for second place with 10oz apiece, both fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot for eight small roach.

Our Monday Disabled and Over 60's match was on the Bridgewater this week which saw most of the canal with a lid of thin ice and leaves mixed. However thankfully the swans and the ducks between them kept just enough clear of ice near Moore Boats to accommodate the thirteen anglers who fished. As was the case the previous week at was again a real struggle for bites but Stu Patterson fishing pieces of worm put eight tiny perch on the scales for 0-6-2 matched by Jimmy Byrne who fished bread punch to catch twelve small roach for a joint win.

Please note that there with be towpath closures on Bridgewater Canal in the area of Holly Hedge Lane, Moore from the 2nd to 20th December 2019 for essential gas main repairs.
