24th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sadly, I have to report the death of longstanding member Stan Deakin following a long illness. I have known Stan for well over half a century and he was one of the nicest men I have met, always cheerful and up for a laugh. Our condolences to his wife and family. His funeral takes place at Walton Crematorium 11-40am Tuesday 1st October 2019 and afterwards at the Waterside Suite Marquee, Centre Park, 1430 Park Blvrd. Warrington WA1 1PR.

Regular working party member Rod Walker ventured away from his regular haunt, The Mount, on Wednesday to try his luck on the Weaver Navigation. Fishing recommended pole and maggot tactics with liberal amounts of groundbait he was soon into his first roach followed by more cracking specimens plus perch and the odd skimmer. He loved it and a return visit is definitely on the cards in the near future. Please note that on Saturday Runcorn Rowing Club are holding their annual time trial races, one in the morning and the same in the afternoon with 50 to 75 boats in each race plus safety craft.

Mike Pritchard reported that he had his best result on the River Mersey for ages after fishing a short session on Saturday. He started off with 'wag and mag' on peg , but after only three small roach changed over to caster on the same line for a better stamp of fish, mainly in the 3 – 6oz range but some in the 8 – 2oz bracket plus a bream of around 1.5lbs. Happy?  Yes, definitely with his forty fish catch.

Ralph Bennett fished at Rixton Claypits on Thursday afternoon and put out a feeder whilst he was setting up his float tackle. In the first ninety minutes he had landed five bream between 3 - 4lbs on banded pellet or corn followed by a six pounder, then nothing. The bites died completely on his feeder line so it was roach and perch on the waggler to end his session and a very enjoyable afternoons fishing.

The Mersey Championship match fished on Sunday at Victoria Park was a close-run affair with only one fish deciding the winner as Derek Bibby and Jimmy Byrne went almost fish for fish, both using groundbait feeder and maggot tactics. Skimmer bream up to 10ozs were what the pair were catching and at the weigh-in Derek just edged out Jimmy into second place with a weight of 17-12-0 against his 17-8-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane and saw no bonus bream to swell weights this week. It was won by Rod Fraser with a weight of 3-11-10 of small roach and perch taken on either bread punch, maggot or pinkie. Mike Worley took second place with 3-0-8. There is a change of venue next week to the Trent & Mersey canal

17th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett had Thursday morning free last week and decided to give Appleton Reservoir a try aiming for a roach session.  It proved too windy for the waggler, so he catapulted hemp into his swim which set the range to clip up his quiver tip.  Neil kicked off with maggot on the hook that produced a couple of small roach so he swapped to a single grain of corn on a fine wire hook with his feeder loaded with groundbait and hemp.  The change brought a few dozen roach, best a pound and the smallest around 8oz. until he called it a day at lunchtime. The iridescent blue flash of a Kingfisher repeatedly crossing the reservoir in front of him also added to a pleasurable mornings fishing.

After an enforced six week enforced break from fishing following an operation on his hand Anthony Rough finally got back on the bank on Sunday morning and enjoyed a three-hour session on the River Dee at Worthenbury. He set up a centrepin reel and trotted an Avon float through his swim with double maggot on the hook. He caught twelve grayling up to 1lb, several dace, salmon parr, plus one brown trout.

The carp at Grey Mist seem to be feeding well with reports of a few catches this past week notably a cracking 23lbs common, one a brace landed by Ste Worrall. Gavin Nevin had a 19 pounder on his Saturday overnighter. Liam Jones fed corn with two fake pieces on the during a four hour session to land four tench, best weighed in at 7-4-0.

Stuart Sargood took his young son Joshua for his first fishing session at Ackers Pit this past weekend and fishing maggot he caught his first fish, a roach, which most definitely he will never forget and hopefully is just the start of many future angling experiences.

Ian Kennedy was back at Statham Pool on Sunday with his mate Allan Biesty where Ian landed four carp but Allan (who said that he wasn't going home until he landed one) had to finally admit defeat.

The Sunday Mersey match was fished this week at Mersey Walk was won by Derek Bibby who started on the feeder and maggot which accounted for a brace of 10oz skimmers and roach but changed to pole and maggot to add more roach for a weight of 8-15-0.  Match organiser Ray Boden took second place with 7-10-0 made up of perch and roach caught on pole and maggot tactics.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held at the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane was won by Barry Chambers with a weight of 6-3-0. He started off with worm and caster but after a blank period a change to pinkie saw a bonus 4lbs bream in his net to which he added a couple of pounds of roach. On the adjoining peg Roy Rogers took second place with 5-3-0 and also landed a 4lbs bream plus small roach alternating between red maggot and pinkie on the hook.

10th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column Notes

10th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sadly, I report the recent death on the 30th August 2019 of former committee member Geoff Gauton who aside for being a keen volunteer on our working parties also held the post of head bailiff for a good number of years. His last big job for WAA was to replace our signs on all Bridgewater Canal Bridges using his pike fishing boat which he also used to patrol the canal. Geoff was also a well-known pike angler and an active member of the Pike Anglers Club. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife and family. His celebration of life is to be held at Warrington Crematorium at 1pm on the 18th September 2019.

Mersey maestro Jim Gannon rang me on Friday absolutely buzzing following a cracking catch from the Weaver Navigation where the previous day he had dragged himself away from his favourite river and made his first visit to this fishery. Fishing a waggler set-up and maggot he enjoyed a fish almost every cast which included roach, bream, skimmers, chub, and rudd.

Mike Morton enjoyed a session at Wide Hole and was so impressed with the bream sport that after chatting to Dave Frangleton our local bailiff Mike kindly offered to help him in cutting back and opening up some new pegs. Worth a trip to this Association owned fishery as the fishing can be great as the fish move in from the canal for sanctuary.

Similarly, Dave Smith made his first visit the Dee on Tuesday and despite describing the track 'an adventure' certainly soon forgot this minor difficulty when he caught five grayling, loads of small chub, and several larger ones.

Following the recent pollution and subsequent fish mortality at Statham Pool it is heartening to hear that on Sunday Ian Kennedy caught two carp, a common and a mirror and lost two further fish. More reports please.

Both Saturday and Sunday Members Mersey matches are back on this weekend where the Saturday one really needs more anglers to take part for the organiser to continue running them. See draw details in coming events below. Thanks to Peel Ports for the care they took in dropping the river level to enable the removal of debris from the weir control gates caused by vandals.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was held at the Bridgewater Canal on the Daresbury Laboratories stretch where in form Rod Fraser who drew an end peg repeated his success of the previous week with a catch of caster caught roach and perch for a weight of 4-3-12. Alan Brown who also drew an end peg took second place with a net of smaller fish alternating between bread-punch and pinkie for 3-7-0. Sixteen fished.

Many thanks to the dedicated groups of member volunteers who attended working parties at Sandiway Lakes last Saturday. More are on the cards so watch this space.

3rd September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

3rd September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sadly, I report the death of longstanding member and well-known local angler John Dagnall who after a very brief stay in hospital passed away on Friday. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. Johns funeral will be held at Warrington Crematorium, Walton 12-20pm Tuesday 24th September 2019.

On Saturday Alan and Angeline Oates waded a good distance down the Alyn from Rossett Bridge section using nymphs (olives and red tags) and later in the day dry flies, only trout on this trip, but some lovely sections of water covered. Earlier in the week Kevin Oates had fished the lower section with maggots and had some decent sized grayling.

Following the recent pollution and subsequent fish mortality at Statham Pool it is now open to members again and I would really appreciate any detailed catch reports. Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time.

This weekends Mersey matches have been cancelled due to essential work required on Howley Weir to clear debris in control gates caused by mindless vandals. I have been in touch with Peel Ports who will be starting to lower the river level as slowly as practicable on Friday as they have to finish the job before Friday 13th September 2019.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished again at Kingsway Allotments saw match organiser Ray Boden clock up his third successive win on his favourite pole and maggot method. His net of roach and perch that sent the scales needle round to 5-6-0 was way down on his previous weights. Pete Jones was in second place with 4-10-0.

Sundays Mersey match fished at Mersey Walk ended up as an individual event which was won by Neil Buist with a weight of 11-8-0 made up of a bonus 3lb bream plus skimmers taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Ray Boden took the runner-up spot with 10-14-0 of perch and roach caught on pole and maggot.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was held at the Trent & Mersey Canal, Billinge where local angler Rod Fraser who drew the wide enjoyed a comfortable win with a net of silver bream and roach for 7-2-8. He fished pole and caster. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with a catch of roach, perch, and gudgeon for a weight of 4-13-8. There were a good number of weights in the 3lbs plus range helped no doubt by the increasing numbers of gudgeon that have made a comeback this year.

Please note that there is a working party at Sandiway Lakes on Saturday 7th September on both fisheries. Carl Wallace is running the one on the small lake meet around 10am on the first car park. Carl will be there all day for general tidying up, trimming, mowing, strimming etc. Anyone got any gear please bring it with them. Andrew Hewson is running the one on the big lake, and the same applies, again meet around 10am second car park. Everybody welcome, any time that you can give will be much appreciated.
