18th December 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th December 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The water level may still be lower than earlier in the year but the fish High Legh were still in a feeding mood last week when Ged Richards decided on his first visit to the fishery on Wednesday. The weather was wet and windy but the surrounding high banks offered some shelter from the elements and fishing simple block-end feeder and maggot he ended his session with a mixed catch of eight small tench, a bream, and two carp around 8-10lbs that tested his light set-up to the limits.

After blanking on a frozen lake, the previous day Neil Plunkett thought Grey Mist was worth a punt despite a mild gale is blowing through on Tuesday.  I met Andrew Weston the bailiff and helped him photograph his mid double carp catch at mid-day and then later he returned the favour when my small groundbait feeder and red maggot gave me the only bite of the session which resulted in a lively Grey Mist tench.  Neil commented, "A fitting end to the year with some great fishing on Warrington waters."

This week's Sunday Mersey Series event at Victoria Park saw match regular and octogenarian Norman Gannon clock up his first win of the year with 3-4-0. His catch was made up of a couple of chub, best 1.5lbs, an 8oz roach, the rest tiny roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Derek Bibby was in second place with 3-2-0 on the same method. Match as usual on Sunday with an additional Special on Boxing Day.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday held on the Dead Length at Walton saw George Barber aka 'The Breadman' put together a mixed net of mainly roach with a few perch for a winning weight of 6-13-7. He caught on the pole at 11metres, mainly using bread punch but changed occasionally to pinkie which accounted for the occasional perch. Ron Durr on the next peg was the runner-up fishing the same method with a weight of 5-7-6. Due to the Christmas/New Year holiday period the next match will be on the 7th January 2019.

Please send me your catch reports, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to gauge how waters are fishing and to plan their outings. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas and plenty of fishing tackle presents.

11th December 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt decided on a pike and perch trip to the Bridgewater Canal on Tuesday and first tried the Moore area but after no action moved to Preston Brook, again zilch. In the clear water conditions, it was a matter of find the fish and decided on a trek to the end of the Bridgewater where the Preston Brook tunnel connects up with the Trent & Mersey Canal. A change of tactics using the old favourite, maggots at last brought results and they both caught roach and skimmers to just over the pound mark.

Sandiway Lakes catch reports are rare as some members seem to think that keeping them to themselves is the way, whereas such information undoubtedly helps to both keep and attract new members. Thankfully our bailiff Andrew Hewson doesn't subscribe to this way of thinking and reports catching a lovely 31lbs mirror on Big Sandiway during his Monday session using his homemade boilies.

Our Saturday Mersey Match Series have now ceased until June 2019. However, the Sunday Mersey Series are still continuing until the end of the season. This week's event at Mersey Walk was won by Alan Faulkner fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot with a net of skimmers, roach, and eels, plus a bonus bream of around 5lbs for a total weight of 12-8-0. Arthur Plumb was second fishing the same method with 10-3-0 and also included a bonus bream of 6lbs and 3lbs topped up by a few small eels and roach.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was held at Woodshaw Reservoir where despite the good pleasure catches the previous week bites were harder to come by than expected. Graham Belton fishing pole and pinkie was the winner with a net of small perch and roach for 5-1-12. Tim Dwerryhouse was the runner-up fishing the same method with a weight of 4-3-4. I'm sure they all appreciated the tea and biscuits served by the team after the match.

After a slow start John Sayer enjoyed a session on The Mount at Buckley when after going three hours without a touch, he had his first fish a carp of around 8lbs which was quickly followed by a further eight fish, the best at 16-8-0 plus a tench for good measure.

Our Wigan bailiff team report that Woodshaw Reservoir is producing reasonable catches of roach and skimmers plus the occasional crucian. Our Disabled & Over 60's match is there on Monday where those taking part get pampered with tea and biscuits served by the team.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series on the river at Kingsway North was won by Derek Bibby with 6-6-0  of roach and perch caught on ground-bait feeder and maggot. Barry Chamber aka 'The Caster Master' was in second place with 5-8-0 of roach taken on pole and caster.

Our Sunday Mersey Series match was fished at Victoria Park this week and saw match organiser Ray Boden take the win with 8-6-0 made up of roach plus a solitary perch all caught on pole and maggot. Derek Bibby fishing groundbait feeder and maggot tactics was the runner-up with an all roach catch for 5-15-0.

Our annual Disabled & Over 60's prize match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge more commonly known as 'The Dead Length'. On form Derek Bibby who just missed out on a treble with a first and second on the Mersey clocked up another win with a weight of 6-3-13 no doubt thanks to the fairly recent boost stocking of the canal by the Environment Agency Fisheries Team. Second place came from the adjacent peg drawn by Barry Chambers who weighed 4-13-6. The catches were made up of mainly roach, skimmers, a few rudd, and even a small chublet. There were eight weights over 4lbs and as you would expect with so many fish tightly shoaled there were a few pike striking. Thanks to Graham Belton everyone who fished won a prize.

27th November 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th November 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Not too many members are taking advantage of the potential of Ackers pit which following a de-watering and silt removal a decade ago was stocked with crucians, rudd, roach, perch, tench, and carp, plus a smattering of bream that found their own way from the Bridgewater Canal via the feeder sluice that maintains the water supply. Ken Grimshaw enjoyed his visit to the fishery this week fishing a light waggler and feeding maggot for a catch of fifteen plump roach and a carp of around 8lbs that really gave him a few anxious moments on his 20's hook and 1.5lbs BS hook length. All in all, quite a pleasurable three hours fishing at this time of the year.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series on the river at Kingsway North was won by organiser Ray Boden with a net made up of three perch, the rest roach for a weight of 8-2-0 caught on pole and maggot. Arthur Plumb fishing the same method was in second place with 6-3-0.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifBarry Chambers was still on form following his last weeks double win by topping the weights in our Sunday Series fished at Mersey Walk with a net of pole caught caster roach for a weight of 7-6-0. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with a similar catch taken on pole and maggot for 6-12-0.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on a gin clear Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road. Contrary to expectations catches were much better than last week with quite a number of anglers topping the 3lbs mark. Jimmy Byrne took first place weighing in a respectable canal winter weight of roach and perch for 4-11-11 taken on the pole and bread punch, later changing over to caster for better stamp roach and perch. 'The Breadman' aka George Barber was second with 4-2-3 taken on his favourite bait. He had almost a bite every cast for four hours ending up with something approaching 120 plus small roach and a couple of rudd, all less than an ounce barring one of 4ounces, certainly looks good for the future if these youngsters manage to escape the cormorants. night permits available from 1st December, also renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries. Good numbers of pike striking and a few hooked and inevitably lost.

Things are getting desperate….only one catch report this week, so a reminder that I really appreciate your reports, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to know how waters are fishing and to plan their outings. Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner had a session on the Trent & Mersey Canal last Friday and between them caught forty quality roach between 8oz to a pound, half a dozen hybrids, and a solitary perch. The next day Ray Leigh enjoyed his trip to the canal near Black Prince Boats where he fished at 11metres feeding pinkie and didn't catch a single roach, but he did land eight perch all over the pound mark. So, if anyone facies trying drop-shotting this stretch from Dutton through to the A49 it is rarely fished and could throw up some surprises.

The carp fishing may have slowed with the colder weather but Appleton Reservoir is still worth a visit for a winter roach session according to Alan Richards. Despite a blank first hour once they found his bait it was game on. He fished a small groundbait feeder and maggot and reckoned he caught over thirty fish with the best around 1.5lbs.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series on the river at Kingsway North was won by Barry Chambers with an all roach catch for a weight of 10-8-0. Baz fished pole and caster. Second placed Jimmy Byrne used the same method but used maggot for a mixed net of roach and skimmers for 9-4-0.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifBarry Chambers was really on form also winning our Mersey Series Fur & Feather fished the next day at Victoria Park with a weight of 7-10-0 of roach. He stuck to the previous day's successful method of pole and caster. Helen Dagnall was second with a net of roach and perch for 6-7-0 taken on pole and maggot. Thanks to Ade Green for sourcing the prizes.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal either side of Acton Grange Bridge. The weights were well down from the previous week with only ounces separating the first three anglers but Derek Bibby came out the winner with 1-15-3 of small roach. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with 1-14-6.

13th November 2018 Warrington Anglers Association guardian Notes

13th November 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our annual top-up stocking of C6 carp took place on Friday when as usual it started with Grey Mist receiving the first batch. Five fish were randomly taken from the holding tanks and by sheer luck the first turned out to be the biggest of the day at 26lbs followed by four further twenties. Moore Quarry was next on the list with five fish to 22.75lbs. Last but not least was the big lake at Sandiway that received fifteen fish plus a special discounted sixteenth (Viv Sheers lost count) that turned out to be a cracking fish of 25.5lbs. All fish with the exception of two were 20lbs plus. Whilst at the fishery I thought it was unusual to be quite full but it turned out that there was reports of a forty being caught that week. Thanks to all those members who turned out to help who were impressed with the quality of the fish.

More members have been out on the Bridgewater this week drop-shotting for pike and perch with the hope of a fish or two improving as the suspended silt clears due to less boat traffic. Liam Speakman fishing at Dunham reports catching four perch, best around 1.75lbs, plus three small pike, best 8lbs. Remember folks to have an un-hooking mat with you as you could end up landing a decent sized pike.

Paul Foulkes enjoyed a hectic last hour before sunset on the Ayn this past week whilst trying out his new centre pin reel. He ended his short session with a catch of fifteen grayling. Paul hadn't caught one of these magnificent fish until he joined Warrington Anglers this summer.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series on the river at Kingsway Allotments was won by the current match record holder Derek Bibby with a much lower weight of 13-9-0 but still enough to take the top money. Derek fished pole and maggot for a mixed net of roach and perch. Martin Lenihan was in second place with 12-0-0 made up of roach and four hybrids to 8oz.

Jimmy Byrne won our Sunday Mersey Series fished at Mersey Walk for with a weight of 11-12-0 of roach and skimmers taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Alan Faulkner was the runner-up with a net of roach and perch for 9-14-0 caught on pole and maggot.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal either side of the A56 'Toast Rack Bridge' due to wall to wall leaves on the Walton stretch. Jimmy Byrne won with 4-11-13 of small roach, perch, and skimmers taken on maggot and pinky. It was great to see veteran matchman Stan Charnock who has been supporting our matches for more years than I care to remember take second place with a similar mix of fish for 2-10-9.

6th November 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th November 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is getting to that time of the year when pike and perch fishing comes into its own and the Bridgewater Canal comes up trumps year on year. Ian Hale fished legered sprat at Lymm on Thursday last moving swims three times after each fish. They weighed in at 9-8-0, 11-6-0, and the final fish of the afternoon one of 13-12-0. I understand there have been a few fish out from the Moore area and it will only improve as the water clarity improves.

Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt cannot get enough of our canal fishing and there are quite literally miles to choose from on four canals. This week they targeted the Trent & Mersey at Anderton Marina where Ken had caught eight roach and a few perch with the biggest silver, a cracker of 1.5lbs. Dave didn't do too bad either, landing three bream around 1.75lbs. three skimmers, and twenty roach. All caught on pole and maggot whereas ken used waggler and maggot.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series fished at Kingsway Allotments was won by Martin Kettle with a cracking pole weight 16-12-0 of roach and perch taken on maggot. Jimmy Byrne was unchanged from last week in second place with 9-13-0 using the same tactics as the winner.

Match organiser Ray Boden stepped up from fourth place on the previous days match to win our Sunday Mersey Series for the second time in as many weeks. Fished at Victoria Park he weighed in 12-12-0  made up of six perch with the rest being roach caught on pole and maggot. Neil Davies took the runner-up spot with an all roach catch fishing the same method.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match fished this week at Woodshaw Reservoir saw Alan Birchall win with 8-12-5 of mainly small roach plus a few skimmers caught on pole and pinkie. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 8-1-1 and fished the tip which paid off with a brace of bream to 3lbs plus roach.

Carp are rather scarce at the moment at Sandiway Lakes but the good news for bream and tench anglers is that some real specimens are ensuring the boilies do not go to waste. On Friday 9th November at 10-30am we will be carrying out our annual carp stocking starting as usual at Grey Mist. I hope that there will be plenty of members present to help the job run smoothly.

Unfortunately a seal has now appeared in the river and just as the Mersey was recovering well from past visitations. No consideration is given to our native fish stocks which in effect are captive to a large degree between the two weirs. The Environment Agency Fisheries are between a rock and a hard place but in the interests of the animal surely it is far better for it to be in its native surroundings and eating its correct diet and not coarse fish from a river that carries its share of pollutants.

Please don't forget to send me your catch reports which are extremely useful to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

30th October 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th October 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett had a silver fish day at Grey Mist on Wednesday despite having his swim attacked by a pair of cormorants on two occasions the day leaving Neil to find where the fish had gone each time and get them back on his feed. He was fishing both waggler and groundbait feeder with maggot and caught 30 roach and a perch on his last cast. The best roach was a splendid 1.5 lbs and most were 6-8 oz fish in lovely condition. Apart from the cormorants keeping him on his toes, an eager pike rushed so fast into the shallows striking at a fish that Neil was retuning that it actually beached itself and soaked him as it flapped its way out with the free meal.  An eventful and enjoyable days sport also shared with two carp anglers, one having landed a 21lb mirror and the other a mid-double, both caught from the margins.

With the recent cold weather sport on some waters has plummeted. Both Dave Gardner and his fishing pal Ken Hewitt blanked this past week at Rixton Claypits but spared themselves another duck on the Bridgewater at Preston Brook. Fishing near the tunnel that connects this canal to the Trent & Mersey Ken had two roach one over a pound, and a perch of 8oz whilst Dave had three roach around 6-8 ounces. Both fished on pole and maggot. I must admit this is the very first report I have ever had from these tunnel swims in over thirty years of writing this column. It certainly looks very tasty but the towpath is quite narrow.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series fished for some weeks now at Kingsway Allotments was won by Martin Lenihan with 10-6-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne was in second place and probably only a fish behind with 10-3-0.

Match organiser Ray Boden was the clear winner of our Sunday Mersey Series fished at Mersey Walk with 15-10-8 made up of eight perch with the rest being roach caught on Ray's favourite method of pole and maggot. The current Mersey match record holder Derek Bibby was the runner-up with a brace of 8oz skimmers and the rest roach for 13-3-0.

Sport was effected by the heavy frosts on our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road. There was only an ounce separating the first two anglers but Jimmy Byrne just kept ahead with a net of small roach and perch for 2-11-2 followed in second place by George Barber 2-10-2.

Many thanks to the Environment Agency Fisheries Team who boosted depleted stocks in the Bridgewater Canal on Monday by introducing some 5000 mixed, roach, rudd, perch, and gudgeon.

Steve Brookes was celebrating his birthday last week and treated himself to a day off at Budworth Mere. He went down the previous afternoon to pre-bait his swim with 70 balls of groundbait full of corn and casters. The next day the bream were already there and feeding and Steve was soon into fish. He landed ten bream, all in the 6 to 7 lb range and two hybrids both, over 3 lbs. The total weight was around 70lbs and all caught on sweetcorn using a feeder at 50 yards.

Anthony Rough despite only having a saloon car has no trouble negotiating the potholed track at Worthenbury, he simply takes his time. On Sunday fishing a large waggler three quarter way across the river towards willows he was hoping to find a few chub. Presentation was a little tricky with the strong flow but when the float did run true it would bring a bite. Feeding maggots, with three maggots on the hook, Anthony caught fourteen chub between 12 ounces and 1lb, 8 grayling to 1lb, and 5 trout. This is a stunning venue and one of my favourites.

Mike Pritchard fished the Mersey at Victoria Park and fishing a small waggler he caught fifty fish made up f roach, hybrids, and perch. He alternated between maggot and caster.

Although I have no details I understand that the Cicily Common was caught on Sunday at 34lbs. I wouldn't mind a photo for our records. This fish is a legend. Another tit-bit was a cracking brace of barbel that came from our stretch of the Ribble.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series fished again at Kingsway Allotments was won by match organiser Ray Boden who fished pole and maggot for a weight of 17-11-0 made up of ten perch with the remainder roach. Martin Kettle was in second place with 12-5-0.

The Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Victoria Park saw John Green who last won in some style in July with just over 51lbs back in the winner's spot with a weight of 12-8-0. He fished pole and maggot for a net of roach, perch, and skimmers. Jimmy Byrne

was second with 11-4-0 of roach and perch fishing the same method. The were good backing weights in both the Saturday and Sunday matches and the winner can virtually come from most pegs.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge and saw another local match ace Derek Bibby edge out last week's winner Jimmy Byrne with a weight of 5-4-5. Jimmy weighed 4-1-7.  Roach and perch made up most catches.

Don't forget your catch reports and it is also nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

16th October 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tom Fahey and Stu Underwood managed to fit in a four-hour session at Statham Pool on Friday and hooked four carp but lost one. They included a small pristine mirror around 5lb, 10lb common, a 15lb common. And Stu had a nice bream of 5lbs on the feeder. Not bad sport taking in consideration the gale force but temperate conditions.

Jim Broadhurst reports a good few hours fishing a Phoenix Park Lake this week when despite struggling with weed he landed five tench with the best at just under 7lbs. He fished a small block-end feeder with micro-pellets and banded halibut on the hook and lost a carp at the net.

Saturdays Mersey Match Series fished at Kingsway Allotments was won by Jimmy Byrne who included a 3lbs bonus bream in his catch of skimmers for a weight of 22-4-0. He fished groundbait feeder and maggot as did second placed Barry Chambers for 11-11-0.

The Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Mersey Walk saw another new match record set by Derek Bibby surpassing the one he claimed on the 22nd September of 40-13-0 by a margin of over 15lbs! He cemented his place in Mersey match history with a phenomenal weight of 58-15-0 taken groundbait feeder and maggot. Derek's catch was made up of fourteen bream to 6lbs, skimmers, and hybrids. Ant Higham aka King of the River was in second place but may have to abdicate following the new record. He fished the same method as Derek and included two 5lbs bream in his net of skimmers for 15-14-0.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick and saw local match ace Jimmy Byrne repeat his last week's win but with a much lower weight of 3-12-4. George Hollis was in the runner-up spot with 3-6-4. Most catches were made up of small roach and perch with not much to divide the field.

Thanks to all those who have volunteered to help clear swims on the River Dane we will sort out dates after leaf fall to make the job easier. Also, thanks to the small but hard-working team who cleared weedy swims at Cicily Mill Pool this week.

At this time of the year when there are not so many anglers on the bank I really need your catch reports and it is also nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

9th October 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th October 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Derek Cowell and Steve McQueen both enjoyed a productive day at The Mount last Wednesday where 'the pupil' out fished the teacher. Newcomer Steve caught five carp smallest 8lb, largest about 12lb, whereas Derek had three carp, again with the biggest just over 12lb. They both fished a method feeder with 6mm and 8mm pellets as banded hook baits. In fairness Steve put his better catch down to the fact that Derek put him on the better peg just as I would do.

Ian James had a cracking days roach fishing at Appleton Reservoir this past week where he set up with a small groundbait feeder using double maggot on the hook. He reckoned that he had about 25lbs made up of some forty-five fish. Andy Strickland hit the jackpot on Friday after blanking on his previous two visits. He caught a roach on his first put-in, and pretty much a bite every cast thereafter with loads of roach 6oz to 12oz, plus one perch. His biggest surprise was the seven tench, one around 5lb, four around 4lb and two around 1.5lb. Two very happy anglers.

Our Woodshaw Reservoir Team report that this pocket-sized fishery is really fishing on top form. Regular Johnny Johnson was there again this Monday and caught fifty decent sized roach, six crucians, and a brace of bream. All fish were caught on caster.

The Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Victoria Park saw a new name on the leader board, Neil Davies, who fished pole and maggot tactics for an all roach net weighing 13-12-0. Match organiser Ray Boden fished the same method to catch a mix of roach and perch for 10-15-0.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road and saw local match ace Jimmy Byrne take a decisive win with almost a 2lbs margin over second placed Alan Brown. Jimmy fished the pole alternating between pinkie and caster for a weight of 6-12-0 with Alan on 4-12-4.

Thanks to all those who have volunteered to help clear swims on the River Dane we will sort out dates after leaf fall to make the job easier. Also, thanks to the small but hard-working team who cleared weedy swims at Cicily Mill Pool this week.
