26th December 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

26th December, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Ian Smethurst sent me the first report for some months from his visit to High Legh Fisheries last week. He wasn't expecting much action and was pleasantly surprised when after three casts his float dipped and soon a tench of about 1.5lbs lay in his landing net. This was followed by four further smaller ones until he hit unto a much bigger fish that took him around the back of the island before parting company. Ian was soon fishing again but after an hour nothing was happening and decided it was time to pack up and was just sorting his bait out when he was in again. Another better fish, but thankfully it stayed in open water and a mirror carp he reckons was 10lb…ish lay on his unhooking mat. Method was a method feeder and dead maggot on the hook.

Last week Ade Green decided on a fresh attack on the roach population at Appleton Reservoir following a recent session when fishing the tip using a small ground bait feeder and maggot he found the going slow with a few small roach for his efforts. This time he fished a different peg and a change of method to a waggler, loose feeding maggot, caster, and hemp at around five rod-lengths. After an hour and a half watching a stationary float he was just about to change to a ledger set-up when the float dipped and it was game on. He ended up with forty-seven roach averaging around three to the pound witnessed by England International Kevin Ashurst who spent some time chatting to him.

Our Sunday Mersey match was another win for match ace Jimmy Byrne with a catch of thirty-eight small roach taken on ground bait feeder and maggot for a weight of 3-0-0. Alan Morris fishing the same method took second place with 1-0-8 made up of a solitary perch and fifteen roach.

19th December 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th December, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

If angling is a drug bailiff, Chris Connell is a self-confessed addict. On Saturday he found himself on the banks of our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery which unfortunately was covered in a coating of ice and the dilemma was he either broke the ice or went home. Well, predictably in no time at all there was a fishable channel in front of his peg and in his words "I went for it" and was certainly glad that he did. Using a tiny pole cup, he fed every twenty minutes or so with micro-pellets capped in brown crumb groundbait and fished caster taking a gudgeon on his first put-in. during his three-hour session he added twelve nice sized roach. Happy days.

On Monday our Disabled & Over 60's Match was held on this same venue by which time the ice had melted leaving very cold-water conditions and bites few and far between. Weights came from pegs 1 to 3 were made up of mainly roach and perch. George Barber fished pole and maggot to take a win with 2-15-4. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up and not too far behind with 2-6-3.

Regular contributor to this column, Mike Pritchard visited the 'Dead Length' which at this time is literally stuffed with silver fish and as you would expect fair numbers of pike and perch who can't believe their luck. With so many fish present and protected from any major cormorant threat by overhanging trees, Mike reckoned he could cast virtually anywhere and with any bait and get a bite. Now, I know it's vastly different in a match, but on your own; so, a few catapulted casters and the float was away, result a roach. It was the same for pinkie or maggot and he ended his session with thirty plus fish which included a decent sized perch.

Only a handful of anglers turned out for our Sunday Mersey match to be faced with a very out of sorts river. Jimmy Byrne was in the money again with ten roach plus a skimmer of four ounces for a winning weight of 1-2-8. He fished a groundbait feeder and maggot.  Ade green put two roach on the scales to take second place with 7ounces. Again, the only current method catching any fish was groundbait feeder and maggot.

Anyone who is a night permit holder be aware that they expire on the 31st December 2017 and must be renewed before further bookings may be taken from 1st January 2018. They are currently available at HQ on payment of 2018 subscription.

Merry Christmas to all members and those who both read and contribute to this column/blog.

12th December 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th December, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett has set himself a challenge for the last couple of years to try to winkle out a tench from Grey Mist Mere during December. The weather forecast this past week didn't look too promising however on Wednesday Neil managed to time his visit just before we had our first taste of the winters snow. Casting a small maggot feeder around midway to try to find fish that had woken up resulted in a tentative bite and soon a grumpy 5.5lb tench lay in the landing net. One bite, one fish, but good fun and mission accomplished.

It is not very often that both Bridgewater Canal and Mersey matches don't take place but the freezing weather conditions this week saw both cancelled. Although matches are advertised it is wise to check with the organiser that they are still on until this weather improves.

Committee members Ade Green and Mike Dench decided to give both the above venues a miss and set out instead for Appleton Reservoir. Targeting roach they both fished a small ground bait feeder with maggot or double pinkie on the hook and soon started catching small roach. A change by Mike to corn on the hook with a few grains in the feeder saw him up his catch rate with a better stamp of fish. Ade had to leave early but Mike was still catching and stayed on undeterred by the sudden snow squalls. He reckoned he had thirty plus roach, the majority between 6-8ozs for a weight of between 12 to 15lbs.

I really would welcome a few more catch reports, please email to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

5th December 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th December, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Dylan Coyle aged 9 years is now coming up to his third year as a Warrington Anglers Association member and from those early beginnings he has become an avid angler and caught a fair selection of different species. Although he had as yet to catch his first pike. After trying for the past two months a recent short session and change of venue to Statham Pool finally brought success. Dylan's sprat dead bait was taken by one of these toothy predators and after a brief fight the pike lay in his landing net. It is one of those angling milestones that will be in his memory forever. Well done Dylan.

Twenty-two members fished our Annual Disabled & Over 60's Prize Match held on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge on Monday. Catches were made up of mainly roach and perch with the better results coming from pegs between Houghs and Walton Gardens Bridges. Lennie (end peg) Dutton took the winners purse for the second week in succession and weighed in 8-4-10 which is a cracking catch for this time of the year. Barry Chambers on the adjacent peg was in second place with 7-12-11. Everyone received a prize.

That well known saying that 'age is but a number' certainly holds true for octogenarian Norman Gannon who had the fish of the day and the biggest weight during our Mersey Sunday Series and failed to get in the money. Unfortunately, his catch which gave a good account of itself on light tackle was a salmon around the 5lbs mark which do not count in matches. Jimmy Byrne took the winners purse with 3-6-0 of small roach taken on a ground bait feeder and maggot. I expect it was some consolation that Norman's brother Jim took second place as rumour has it that they share winnings.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifA reminder to text Tom Fahey and Geoff Cropper 07538 494353 with your cormorant sightings on our fisheries. This is vitally important and the duo are collating all your information. Also noisy scaring measures may be employed where required.
