27th December 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th December, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Well, I hope everyone received the Christmas presents that they were hoping for and really had a good time. Due to the fact that some thieving ****s (you can fill in the missing letters to suit) stole the majority of my fishing tackle last month I sent Santa a long list and although it will take a good few years to make up the loss a start was made.

Motivated by this and the high number of tackle thefts reported to the police the thought crossed my mind that if we had a number of dedicated volunteers to run an online 'stolen tackle site' it may be of some help. Because currently there is absolutely no way of checking if you buy from online sites or other outlets. It goes without saying that those who buy knowingly are in my book the lowest of the low.

As usual there were members out fishing on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and due to the unseasonal mild weather they caught a few fish. Bailiff Joe Garry and his mate Stu Smith fished Woodshaw Reservoir where Joe landed three carp and Stu had an all roach catch.

Martin Lenihan repeated his success of last week's Sunday Series to make it two in a row and win our Boxing Day Special Mersey Match with a weight of 3-7-12 taken on ground bait feeder and maggot. It was really good to see Jim Gannon back fishing following a spell in hospital….it takes a lot to keep a good man down and using his favoured ground bait feeder tactics, and I suspect at some point bread was on the hook, he weighed an all roach catch of 3-6-8 to take second place.

Following previous weeks mega-catches on the Trent & Mersey Canal our Tuesdays Disabled & Over 60's match weights were absolutely decimated and the lowest that I think I have ever reported from this fishery during the thirty years or so I have been writing this column. Nevertheless, Paul Bibby made his first visit to the series count but needed only one fish, a perch of 9ozs for the win. Alan Brown and George Hollis were joint second with just over 6ozs.

Tight lines to everyone for the New Year.

20th December 2016 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

20th December, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A number of members who have been exploring our river fisheries of late have been pleasantly surprised by their natural and wild state. As a club with the exception of the Mersey we have always left these waters to evolve as nature intended which I think makes a fishing trip special. Some of my red-letter days have come about by first of all selecting an interesting and likely looking swim, making a way to the water's edge through the undergrowth, and finally waiting with anticipation for the stick- float to dip under as it trots downstream. Then it's game on.

Martin Lenihan won our Sunday Mersey Match with a combination of ground bait feeder and pole caught roach for 4-11-0.  Ant Higham (AKA the King of the river) was in the runner-up spot with a similar all roach catch taken on ground bait feeder and maggot for 4-5-0.

As sport slows at this time of the year Houghs Bridge area of the Bridgewater Canal is worth a visit where quality roach and perch to 2lbs were reported this past week. Pinkie brings on the smaller fish but persevere with caster and like regular contributor Mike Pritchard you could be in line for that perch of a lifetime. During Mike's short session this week he also managed to 'catch' a pike of around 7lbs…..well not catch in the truest sense of the word as this predator became over  enthusiastic in attacking his keepnet and its teeth became tangled in the small mesh. Mike released it a good few pegs away where other pike were striking a small roach.

On the same length of canal weights were halved from the previous week on the Trent & Mersey and Alan Brown moved up a place from last week to take a win with 5-12-15 of small roach on pinkie and bread. George Hollis was second with 3-10-14. All the weights came from amongst the trees anyone who drew outside of those pegs found the going really tough. Please note the match next week is on Tuesday following Boxing Day on the Trent & Mersey at School Road.

13th December 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th December, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with sadness that I report the death on Sunday after a long illness of an old friend and longstanding Warrington Anglers Association member Roslind Claire  Cummings. Ros as she was affectionally known was in past years active in our ladies match scene and represented Warrington Anglers Association at national championships on numerous occasions. She also helped WAA with our junior events and annually helped with 'the licking and sticking' process of sending out our license booklets. Our deepest sympathies go out to husband Pete and family.

Committed river angler Ade Green enjoyed a visit to the River Dane at Holmes Chapel on Sunday where fishing stick-float and maggot and changing swims when bites dried up he reports catching 22 brown trout and grayling to 1lb and a chub of around 4lbs. Unfortunately, his session was suddenly cut short when he fell and ended up wet through with his waders full of water.

Regular column contributor Mike Pritchard reports a good session on the Bridgewater Canal at the Dead Length on Saturday where fishing a small waggler he soon had around 3lbs of small roach on pinkie. A switch to caster attracted a better stamp of roach to 9oz and he ended his session with over 6.5lbs but reckons he would have had more but for the ducks who were more than happy to devour the free offerings. That's fishing.

Bites were scarce on our Sunday Mersey Match but Jimmy Byrnes managed to stay just over an ounce ahead of second placed Ade Green. Jimmy fished a ground bait feeder and maggot for an all roach catch of 3-14-4 including fish to 10oz.  Committee member Ade also fished a ground bait feeder but with five small roach in his net after the first hour he swapped over to pole and maggot for a weight of 3-12-10.

Weights were good on Monday our Disabled & Over 60's match that was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Lane.  Derek Bibby was top rod with an impressive winter catch of small roach and skimmers for a weight of 12-7-8 taken on pole fished red maggot and pinkie. Alan Brown was the runner-up with 10-7-9 taken on bread punch and pinkie. Graham Belton with a weight of 6lbs and usually enough for a win missed the money by a mile. Back on the Bridgewater at Houghs Bridge next week.

6th December 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th December, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last Saturday saw Cameron Daley (pictured below) who will reach the tender age of four years in January out for a short piking session on the Bridgewater Canal with his dad Steve. His first try at spinning resulted in a waterlogged plastic bag but a couple of casts later he hooked and landed a small jack. A change of method to float-fished lamprey tail resulted in his biggest fish to date at 8-6-0. After playing and landing both of them himself he struck and hooked another but magnanimously handed the rod to dad Steve to take the third which fell to smelt.

Our Sunday Mersey Match produced a first win of this year's series for Roy Everson (aka The Cobra) who fished a groundbait feeder and maggot for a couple of perch plus roach for a weight of 4-12-0. Second place was rather crowded when three anglers ended up with identical weights. Karl Guy, Ant Higham, and 'tip-master' Paul Harding all put 3-5-0 on the scales to share the money from the three places.

This weeks Disabled & Over 60's 'Christmas' prize match fished at Walton saw George Barber who it is rumoured has shares in Warbuton's Bakery take yet another win fishing the pole and the white stuff on the hook with 4-6-6 of roach. Derek Bibby took second place with a similar catch for 4-1-9. Every angler received a prize in this friendly weekly series. Next week there is a venue change to the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Lane.
