23rd February, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd February 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Things were looking good at this weeks Mersey Series weigh-in when Ade Green put his net of fish in the scales , only four fish but a bonus skimmer of 4.5lbs boosted what would in any case been a winning weight to 5-11-0. Roy Everson was relegated to second place with 13ozs and to say it was hard going was an understatement but the 'Mersey mad' regulars are no quitters and stuck it out to the death.

It was a complete change of fortunes at our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday with the fish literally throwing all caution to the wind as they ravaged angler's baits. Derek Bibby almost doubled the weight of his nearest rival with a cracking catch of skimmers and roach for 13-13-0. Derek fished on the pole using bread punch and maggot. This brought his tally up to five wins since the start of the year and his third consecutive win of this event. Committee member, Graham Belton was in the runner-up spot with 7-9-0 that would normally have put him in contention.

James Lea reports a pike on legered lamprey from this same venue but all he caught on the pole was a solitary perch so it just shows how tightly pack are the shoals. It doesn't matter how good you are if there are no fish in front of you it is fingers crossed and a waiting game.

It looks like a change of venue is on the cards in a week or two, I am not saying where it is but I don't live too far away. I spotted Jimmy Byrnes who had caught a few skimmer and lots of tiny roach and Dennis Bate who had a decent skimmer, tiny roach, and enough tackle with him to kit out three anglers. He picked a nice sunny spot whilst Jimmy shivered in the shade.

Thanks to all the team who worked so hard setting up our display stand and promoting our club at the Northern Angling Show last weekend. It was great to meet and chat to members and of course welcome those who joined at the event. Warrington Anglers Association have attended and supported it every year since it started and this year was the best so far. I know some of our teams wallets took a serious hit with the 'must have' tackle they bought.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.

16th February 2016 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

16th February 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Don't forget the Northern Angling Show held at Event City, Manchester this weekend. Come and see us on stand 456.

Mike Pritchard fished the Bridgewater Canal at Walton on Saturday but it was slow going for the first hour before eventually the fish came on the feed and it was soon one every cast.  Mike fished his preferred method of waggler tactics using one of his homemade loaded straws (these floats take me back in time) and pinkie on the hook. At the end of his four hour session Mike was more than happy with his net of roach, perch, and skimmers

Roy Everson made it his third Mersey win of 2016 with an all roach catch of 2-4-2 taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. He caught a better stamp of roach than second placed Jimmy Gannon on 1-13-0. Good news that there was no seal sightings this week.

Recent heavy frosts saw weights drop at our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday but it didn't stop Alan Brown notching up his first win of the year with an all roach catch of 4-12-8. Fished once again on the Dead Length of the Bridgewater the next three weights were a close run thing with less than two ounces separating them. George Barber just had the edge to take the runner-up spot with 3-13-10 but things could have been much different when he struck into his first fish ….. but it just kept on going towards Moore and probably didn't even realise it was hooked. Ah, that's fishing.

Please note that on Saturday the Trafford Rowing Club are holding their annual Head of the Bridgewater Races) on the canal between 09.00 and 16.00 hours. Please avoid the length between the Marsland Road Bridge (Brooklands) and Oldfield Brow Bridge.

9th February 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Many thanks to those members who have sent me some cracking photographs of their catches for use on our display boards on stand (456) at the Northern Angling Show held at Event City , Manchester on the 20th and 21st February 2016. We still have room for more but need those catch shots ASAP, thanks in anticipation.

Good catches again on Monday at our popular Disabled & Over 60's which was fished again by popular demand at the Dead Length. Derek Bibby made the most of a good draw to make it his third win of 2016. He drew near Houghs Bridge and fishing maggot and caster on the pole he put 7-9-10 of perch and roach on the scales. Lenny Dutton was in second place with 6-3-4. The lowest weight between Walton and Houghs Bridges was 3-11-0 but if you drew beyond the latter it plummeted 11ounces.

Despite the problem of our parking as yet not sorted out to our stretch of the Sankey St Helens Canal at Carterhouse, Widnes it didn't put of Dave Tranter who fishing a small waggler and loose feeding maggot found the roach and rudd in a feeding mood. Casting across to the far shelf he ended his session with twenty six fish, some around the pound mark.

According to our Wigan bailiff team there are roach and a few carp reported from C & D (Fosters Pools) although the access to our car park is restricted and members should park sensibly on the road. At our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery roach are being caught from most pegs along with a few chub and crucians.

Over the next few weeks members may find access to parts of Worthington Lakes temporarily disrupted whilst essential maintenance works are taking place to improve footpaths and general safety. Some sections may be closed and there will be a need to shut the car park at short notice when contractors are on site.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.

2nd February 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd February, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Drop-shotting was the phenomenon of 2014 when tackle dealers sold out of rods and manufacturers couldn't produce fast enough to meet demand. Well, it's still as popular as ever and many of our members are enjoying the fact that travelling light with just a 6 or 7ft rod, a few lures, landing net, and unhooking mat, can produce some surprising results. Neil Blood can definitely testify to this as he has been enjoying some cracking sport with perch on the Macclesfield Canal but last week his eleven year old daughter Hannah out-fished her dad when she landed perch of 2.4 and 2.9lbs.

Members fishing Sunday Mersey Series are still struggling for bites, but keen as ever they know that the river can produce much better results. Last week's winner Roy Everson was top rod again with a net of small roach plus a bonus perch (times are hard) of 4ounces for 1-11-0. Ant Higham, aka King of the River was in runner-up spot with an all roach catch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for 1-8-0.

Superb results on our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match with a double figure win for veteran ace matchman Jimmy Byrne with a roach and perch catch of 10-6-8 from the inform Bridgewater Canal. Barry Chambers comfortably took second place with a similar catch weighing 7-7-0 and the lowest angler's weight of 3-1-6 kept everyone happy. This is not a big money match and at £3 to enter it will not break the bank and all the entrance money is spread and paid out. Framing will not make an impact on your bank balance but the competition is ultra-keen and the banter lively.

As promised the membership cards are in the post and should be with you anytime soon. Don't forget on receipt your 2015 membership is no longer valid.

HQ is open as usual on Friday from 7 – 9pm for night permit renewals, subscriptions, new members and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can ring me on 01928 716238.
