29th December 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th December, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I would suspect Grey Mist Mere is still producing a carp or two judging by the numbers booking on for night sessions. Likewise Moore Quarry although not as many doing a night session. Don't forget night permits will require renewal from the 1st January 2016.

We have been lucky during the floods this past week as our only still water fisheries to be effected are Cicily Mill and Statham Pool. The latter is still unfishable as the whole area including Meadow View Fisheries and the golf course were inundated and with the threat of 'Storm Frank' it could get worse before it gets better. United Utilities have been busy pumping to drop levels at Statham.

Needless to say the Mersey was unfishable on Sunday and our Sunday Mersey Series match was cancelled. Next week weather permitting draw 10am Victoria Park.

No such problems on our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Moore where match organiser Jimmy Byrne fishing the pole and alternating between bread punch and worm weighed in 5-1-8. He included a bonus 2.5lbs perch in his catch of small roach. George Barber was in second place using his favourite and well-practiced method of pole and bread punch for an all roach catch for 3-5-2.

A Happy New Year to everyone. Please note HQ is closed until Friday 8th January 2016. You can still email me details of any catches to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can ring me on 01928 716238.

22nd December 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd December, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

There was some action at Grey Mist Mere last week with one of our young anglers I have no doubt being quite pleased with his fish of over 22lbs. Our volunteer team will be at the Northern Angling show again in February and would more than welcome any of your catch shots from our fisheries for our display.

Neil Buist fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to win our Sunday Mersey Series with 5-4-0 made up of three skimmer bream to 1lb plus small roach. Weights then dropped and some struggled for a bite which is not surprising with the recent problems at Howley Weir but Jim Gannon who is in the frame most weeks made runner-up spot with 2-9-0 fishing the same method.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal followed the fish back to the 'Dead Length' again where it is known the fish congregate. Even though it is quite mild for the time of the year it is no fun sitting on a fishing box for four or five hours and watching a motionless float. Eventually you start imagining bites which only increases the frustration as you keep missing them! No such problem for Alan Brown as he put together a net of roach and skimmers taken on pole and bread punch from peg 336 for a winning weight of 5-5-0. It was a close run thing when second placed Ron Durr weighed his catch at 5-4-8. Eighteen fished producing a fair number of 3lbs plus weights and most over 2lbs.

A very merry Christmas to everyone. Please note HQ is closed until Friday 8th January 2016. You can still email me details of any catches to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can ring me on 01928 716238.

15th December 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th December, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our bailiff team who look after our waters in the Wigan area report that Woodshaw reservoir is fishing very well at present for all species with plenty silvers being caught. Two members fished there for the first time last week and started their session with small roach but in the last couple of hours the bigger fish moved in on their feed. They ended their session catching tench, bream, and crucians and were so impressed that they were back on the fishery the following day. However the weather turned nasty but although not as productive as their first visit they still enjoyed good sport in the atrocious conditions.

This week's Saturday Series on the Mersey had to be cancelled due to the drop in level on the river which is due to a fault on one of the sluice gates at Howley Weir. There is little that the Manchester Ship Canal Company can do to effect a repair until flood conditions improve to allow divers to safely inspect the structure. If it happens this next week the level will need to be reduced even further however I have asked that levels be dropped gradually in order that fish are not sluiced out to below the weir.

The next day with the river in flood our Sunday Mersey Series was quite literally a washout resulting in only two anglers catching fish. Alan Morris had one roach and an eel and Norman Gannon a small eel. Needless to say some anglers took the 'early bath' option which definitely proved the right decision for Neil Buist who rather than waste his bait and precious fishing time went to Appleton Reservoir. Fishing the groundbait feeder and maggot he caught forty roach ranging from 4 to 12oz.

The pressure was taken off the resident fish on the Dead Length for this Mondays Disabled & Over 60's match when it was moved to the Tramps Grave at Moore. It was pegged either side through to the post office and the 'stick-ups' where normally the latter would be a top draw. However it produced only ounces as it turned out whereas Derek Bibby pegged opposite the post office received an early Christmas present by winning the event with a nice net of small skimmers and roach taken on pole and punched bread. Derek weighed in 6-0-6 with second place going to Vice President Geoff Brooks with 5-9-4 from the next peg. As happens at this time of the year the fish were tightly shoaled and it was down (aside from skill) to the luck of the draw. Please note earlier draw next week 21st Dec of 9-30am.

It is getting that time of the year when reports are scarce so please email me details of any catches to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can ring me on 01928 716238. 8th December 2015 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

8th December, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett was lure fishing again on the Bridgewater on Monday morning using his antique but trusty Abu 6ft solid glass spinning rod. He ended up with three nice jack pike which were all in great condition and all returned safely.  He lost one other slightly larger on the way in but nevertheless his tally of six from the canal in the last week in a total of five hours fishing isn't half bad.

Anglers really struggled for bites in this week's Saturday Series on the Mersey but Jim Gannon kept his head down fishing on a groundbait feeder with maggot on the hook to win with ten small roach for 1-6-0. Match organiser Ray Boden was the runner-up with a net of small roach caught on the same method for 1-5-0.

But what a difference a day makes when on our Sunday Mersey Series the winner Martin Lenihan put 7-10-0 on the scales. A bonus bream of 4lbs, a 1lb skimmer, plus thirty roach taken on a groundbait feeder did the damage and left the rest of the field well behind. Alan Morris was in second place catching a skimmer and small roach for 2-5-0.

On Monday the Dead Length came through again this week for our Disabled & Over 60's match regulars. As happens every winter the fish shoal up in this sheltered area and George Barber made the most of his draw on peg 236 catching a roach on his first put in. He was kept busy for the remainder of the match and ended up putting 8-0-8 of mainly roach on the scales to reverse last week's results by swapping places with Lennie Dutton to relegate him to second place. Lennie weighed in 5-2-6 and the lowest section was won with almost 4lbs.

Grey Mist Mere has definitely benefitted from the weed clearance program evidenced by the number of anglers booking on for the night.  Every angler I am told caught on Saturday night with the biggest one of our stocked carp at 19lbs.  Another work party is planned for this Saturday 12th so if any members fancy helping you will be made very welcome. Please note anglers fishing Friday night must be packed up by 10am on Saturday morning.

1st December 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st December, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I sadly report the death of Dave Berry who passed away in his sleep on the 13th November. Dave has had a long association with angling with Cheshire Angling and latterly for a good number of years running his Meadow View Fishery that he dug out and built up into a successful well established complex. Cremation is at 11-40am on Thursday 3rd December 2015 at Warrington. Family flowers by request, donations to the Heart Foundation. Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Margaret and family.

Lee Latham and his five year old son Jay who were out again on the Bridgewater Canal on another drop-shotting session. After previously being severely trounced by Jay it was payback time at last when Lee hit into a fish on a lure and light tackle that set off like a train. After a number of anxious moments a healthy mirror carp of 11-11-0 lay on his unhooking mat.

We had a visit from poachers and vandals last week at our Wide Hole Fishery where these morons destroyed bankside trees to stoke up the fire and generally left the place in a disgusting state strewn with empty beer cans. There is a defined offence of 'theft of fishing rights' so any member spotting poachers can ring the police. Thanks to the member who reported this and cleared up these misfits rubbish.

Following the cancellation of last week's Saturday Series on the Mersey due to adverse conditions it went ahead this week despite a big tide and high winds. Weights were understandably well down but Ade Green stuck to maggot feeder tactics and his 2-1-0 of small roach was enough to chalk up his second win on the river. In second place and I have to say rarely out of the money was Jim Gannon on the same method catching small roach for 1-14-0.

Our Sunday Mersey Series wasn't much better and Neil Buist needed only 1-4-0 of small roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot for the win. I shouldn't need to tell you who was second but for the record Jim Gannon was there again putting seven small roach on the scales for 1-1-0.

Thankfully the Bridgewater Canal fished much better for our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday. Fished on the Dead Length Lennie Dutton notched up his third win in as many weeks with 5-12-4 of roach taken on the pole and alternating between bread punch and pinkie on the hook. George Barber was in the runner-up spot with 4-5-0 of roach taken on pole and bread punch.

Again many thanks to our member volunteers who turned up on Saturday to Grey Mist Mere despite the weather to continue the task of weed removal. A greater number of members are now fishing the water so I would hazard a guess that more fish are being caught.

Please email me your catch reports to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can ring me on 01928 716238. Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open on Friday between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, and any queries.
