Joe Pimblett was the new winner our Junior Woodshaw Reservoir match on Monday with a weight of 9-2-0 of crucians and roach fishing the pole and alternating between maggot and pellet. In second place was Dylan Anglesey with 7-2-0.

Jimmy Byrne was back in first place this week after languishing in the runner-up position last week in our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match with a weight of 13-13-0. It was fished on the Mersey for a change of venue and he included bream, roach, and perch in his winning net of fish. Now second place was a welcome surprise to see my old friend Stan Deakin brush the cobwebs off his rods and show that he still knows a thing or two about river angling. Stan had no bonus fish but still managed a nice net of small fish for 5-13-10.

Regular Mersey devotee Jimmy Gannon clocked up his first win of the season in our Saturday Series this week with a cracking weight of 19-06-0. He fished the tip using maggot and worm to catch four bream with a brace weighing in at 5 and 6lbs, plus small roach and perch. Runner-up Derek Bibby fished the pole to take a good net of roach, perch and dace for 9-6-0.

Our Mersey Series on Sunday produced a first win on the river this season for Neil Buist with another good weight of 15-9-0 made up of three bream, best 6-4-0 plus roach and perch to leger and maggot tactics. Rod Frazer better known for his River Weaver match wins came in second with 13-8-0 with a similar species mix.

Members should be on the lookout for fires on the banks of our river fisheries as they are a dead giveaway for signs of poachers. Don't forget theft of fishing rights is an offence for which both Police and the Environment Agency will act and prosecute offenders.

Finally I really do need more members catch details for publication in both this column and my blog to share with both existing and potential members. It only takes a brief email and may save someone a wasted trip or give them a red letter day.

21st July 2015 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

21st July, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Peter Hilton re-joined Warrington anglers this month after a lapse of over half a century when he was a teenager. So far he has put in a few visits to the Bridgewater canal at Astley this past week and had roach to a pound. On Friday he tried Rixton Clay Pits which wasn't on our card fifty years ago and caught his first ever bream a nice fish of 2-2-0 on double red maggot along with roach on sweetcorn. To quote Peter, "A good start."

Eric Smith simply cannot get enough of our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery as he was back again on Sunday and managed to get the same peg as the previous week so expected nothing less than a good day. Not to be disappointed on the first cast he had a bream about 1.5lbs followed by a 3lbs tench on the second cast. And so his session continued with four crucians; and believe it or not this was the quietest period as the next eight hours provided, more or less, a fish a cast. The majority were crucians up to 1lb but with plenty around the 1lb 8oz mark and a new PB at 2-10-0. The rest were hybrids to over 2lbs plus four decent sized tench. He float-fished at the edge of the reeds feeding hemp and hard pellets with a brown shrimp as hookbait. The shrimp cost him £3 and the hemp and pellets about another £1. Eric reckoned that it was the best £4 he had spent in a long ti

James Brown won our Junior Woodshaw Reservoir match on Monday for the second week in succession albeit with a lesser weight of 8-5-0 of crucians fishing the pole and pellet. In second place was Dane Rawlinson with 7-11-0. A new face on the block Lucas Zubrickas came in at third on his first attempt.

Our popular Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was won by newcomer Keith Daintith edging Jimmy Byrne into second place with a weight of 5-4-0 against 4-4-0. It will be a different ball game next week on the Mersey.

Our Mersey Saturday Series this week saw Ray Boden fishing the pole and maggot put together a mixed net of roach and perch for 6-14-0 and yet another win of the season. But it was a close run thing though as second placed Norman Gannon lost a 5lbs bream at the death in weed at the margin but still weighed in enough to keep himself in the money with 5-3-0 made up of a 4lbs bream and perch fishing legered maggot and worm.

The Briars Cup Open on the Mersey on Sunday was won by match veteran Derek Bibby with 5-5-0 of perch and roach plus a bonus 10oz skimmer taken fishing the tip and maggot. The previous days winner, Ray Boden was denied the double and pushed into second place by just an ounce when he put 5-4-0 of perch and roach on the scales taken on pole and maggot.

14th July 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

14th July, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Head Bailiff Jay Makin took some time out last week to do a spot of fishing on his favourite venue Grey Mist Mere. He arrived at the mist in late afternoon setting up zig rigs on both rods and was soon into his first fish which was around 21lb closely followed by an 18 pounder. Later that afternoon both rods went off at the same time resulting in two nice doubles. Jay had another carp before 9pm before they switched off for the night making his tally four mirrors and a common. He hooked three carp on Friday morning and lost them in quick succession.

Paul Asher certainly enjoys his sessions on Small Sandiway and reports last week after baiting up he had his first run within five minutes and ended his session with a tench, a bream, and four carp. Sadly work called and headed off to work for a night shift. Ahh well that's what provides the wherewithal that buys the tackle and bait.

Eric Smith spent the day at Woodshaw on Sunday and reports that the sport was again excellent. He started off fishing dead maggot over hemp and groundbait but was having problems foul hooking fish, (looks like the peg was solid). Switching to fishing prawns along the edge of the rushes the action was more positive and he finished the day with around 30-35lb of fish, made up of crucians, the best two taking the scales down to 1-15-0 and 2-2-0, plus a lot of good quality roach in the 6- 8oz bracket, skimmers to 1.5lbs, 3 tench, and half a dozen perch.

James Brown won our Junior Woodshaw Reservoir match on Monday with 11-11-0 of crucians and roach fishing the pole and alternating between maggot and pellet. In second place Callum Cooper had a bonus common carp of 8-4-0 taken on paste plus roach for a total weight of 10-1-0.

The Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton and saw Jeff Clare notch up another win with a net of hybrids and skimmers for 5-4-12. Derek Bobby was second with 4-3-8.

Our Mersey Saturday Series this week saw match organiser Ray Boden edge Jimmy Byrnes into second place as Ray put 4-9-0 on the scales against Jimmy's 4-6-0. Both catches taken on the pole using maggot and were made up of perch and dace with one going to 12ozs.

The Mersey Sunday Series saw the welcome return after some absence of 'Ant Higham aka The King' who included a bonus 7lbs bream in his catch plus small perch for a decisive first win of the year with a total weight of 9-10-0. Ant took all his fish on either legered maggot or worm. Martin Lenihan was in runner-up spot with six skimmers and perch fishing the same method for 6-12-0.

7th July 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

7th July, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Sunday Tony Rough visited the River Vyrnwy for the first time on our Llanymynech stretch and started his day by going head over heels down the bank into a bed of nettles (on his own admission the result of inappropriate footwear). However he is made of sterner stuff and encouraged by the sight of rising fish on one of the deeper runs he caught on his first cast and the bites continued throughout the morning.  Tony used a small stick float with maggot or a section of worm as hookbait, and fed maggot and hemp. Although none of the fish where of any size and consisted of small chub and dace he enjoyed a pleasant morning watching his float dip almost every cast.

Eric Smith spent a few hours at Woodshaw on Sunday and managed to winkle out about twenty five pounds of fish which consisted of sixteen Crucians, twelve of which were over the pound mark and the best taking the scales down to just over two pounds. A solitary tench and a raft of roach and skimmers made up the rest of the catch. Double dead red maggot float fished a rod length out over hemp and a pellet based ground bait was the successful method.

Catches were also good on our Junior Woodshaw Reservoir match the following day which saw a new winner in the series when Joe Winstanley took the honours on the pole using pellet paste to put together a net of crucians and roach for 9-14-0. He was over 2lbs clear of second placed Joe Pimblett on 7-11-0. All paid up junior members are entitled to fish this series which usually ends with a prize giving and BBQ.

The Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Cockfight length and saw Jeff Clare with a bonus bream plus bits for a winning weight of 4-2-8. Jimmy Byrne was in runner up spot with a small fish net for 3-3-0.

Jimmy Byrne followed up his Mersey third place last Monday by being top rod on our Mersey Saturday Series with 3-2-0 made up of three skimmers, small perch, and roach. Neil Buist was in second place with a couple of skimmers and small perch for 2-8-0. Both fished pole and maggot.

To quote one of our match regulars who shall remain anonymous 'Put Jimmy Byrnes on an end peg and the rest are fishing for second'. Well, true or not, Jimmy was pleased to both draw an end peg and put together his second match winning weight in two days on this venue of 4-10-0 to take the Sid Jones Open Trophy. His catch was made up of a couple of dace, roach, and perch taken on pole and maggot tactics. Match organiser Ray Boden was in second place with 2-15-0 of roach and perch fishing the same method.
