28th April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Carp are conspicuous by their absence at present on Sandiway Small Lake but the good news is that the tench are ravenous and are on the munch. They may not reach the double figure weights of the specimens in our Large Lake next door but good catches are on the cards of fish to around 6lbs. Lots of carp seen cruising in the margins presumably ready for spawning.

It's a different situation at our Mount Fishery at Buckley where Mike Peers reports catching sixteen carp in a hectic session where all fell to surface baits. James Hedges fished the pole at 11metres using 4 and 6mm pellets for an enjoyable mornings sport catching quality roach to just under 2lbs, three tench, plus a mirror carp that stretched his 6's elastic to the limit of 8lbs. Worth a visit over the bank Holiday to be more or less guaranteed to catch.

Only ten or fifteen minutes' drive away Offa's Dyke Pools are now crammed with a good mix of fish and whilst there's nothing  there of interest to specimen hunters if you simply wish to keep seeing your float go under it is another place to go over the weekend. There is also a toilet onsite.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished at Pickering's Bridge saw weights plummet and this week's winner George Barber needed only 1-14-4 to make the top weight. Runner-up Alan Morris was almost 1lb adrift with 15-12. This stretch of the Bridgewater Canal was in the past a top match and pleasure anglers venue but never recovered from marginal weed clearance and dredging that removed attractive fishy habitat some years ago. Jimmy Byrnes is running a Bank Holiday Special next Monday, see coming events.

A number of game anglers have asked me recently if there are any of our lakes on which they can practice their casting techniques. The simple answer is all but be mindful of back casts as regards the safety of others. Stick on a fly and the results could prove interesting but ensure you are kitted out with suitable landing net and a fish friendly idea is an unhooking mat which only cost a few pounds.

Please note that night permit holders may only book on between 9am and 6pm. recently a few members have tried to go outside these limits which is unfair to those who stick to the rules. There is no excuse as all calls or messages are time logged.

We have received a complaint about anglers using a dinghy to bait up swims on Budworth Mere. Please note members are not allowed to use dinghies/ boats on any of our waters.

21st April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

There was a cracking turn out of volunteer members at both Grey Mist Mere and Offa's Dyke Fisheries this past weekend. Thanks to all those who gave their time and effort to make our club better for others. Lots of weed was removed at the Mist and at Offa's preparations involving the removal of bushes in readiness to erect otter proof fencing.

Eric Smith and his friend spent a few hours at Woodshaw on Sunday and made a point of starting his catch report by saying that the fishery was immaculate and the bailiff and the regulars there were so welcoming they made it a pleasure just to be there. On the fishing side of things his long time fishing mate Terry 'Fishless' Fetcher had a  really good day landing around 10lb of roach and skimmers plus a PB crucian of 1-12-0. These are the first fish Terry has caught since last summer so it was a really special day for him (they don't call him Fishless for nothing). Eric himself didn't do so well with the silvers but nevertheless landed between 5 to 6lb of roach and skimmers and a nice perch, but the icing on the cake was a couple of crucians, one of which was a new PB at 2-5-0.

Not to be beaten Neil Plunkett although still smarting from his first blank at Rixton a few weeks ago decided on Monday morning that it was time for a re-match.  Starting at first light he had landed five bream in the first forty five minutes and added another eighteen ranging from about 1 to 3.5lbs. For good measure he also added five tench between 3 and 4lbs. and a couple of roach. By the early afternoon he had run out of bait but enjoyed a cracking session and felt vindicated plus topped up his sun tan as a bonus.

Ian Shepherd decided on a trip to High Legh Pools on Friday although almost thwarted by his wife deciding at the last minute that she needed the car. However he eventually made it to the venue and met two members on their first trip to the venue who asked him for advice which knowing Ian was freely given and in great detail. The guys ended up catching a carp apiece, a few rudd, and both lost better fish. Ian set up his spanking new rod complete with plastic covering still on the handle hoping his special PVA mix would christen it in good style. However it was not to be, although he did pick up four carp around the 5lbs mark on his old rod.

New deputy head bailiff Mike Dench did his rounds at Phoenix Park and being a dyed in the wool fly angler just couldn't resist a few casts whilst there. The result was a 16.5lb mirror which fell to a home tied spun deer hair fly. Who needs boilies!

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished at Grappenhall this week saw Ron Durr take his first win of the series this year with a bream and roach catch for 4-2-3. Runner-up was Lenny Dutton with a similar catch and just a midges over an ounce behind with 4-1-1. Twenty four anglers fished.

14th April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Following the resignation of Barry Fleming due to ill health we advertised for a new head bailiff and were pleasantly surprised to receive three applications. All are motivated individuals and each have their own skills and ideas that they could bring to the role. After careful consideration and due to the fact that there is a lot of work for a single individual it was decided to appoint all three but although they have equal responsibility for simplicities sake James Makin is the head bailiff with Ian Robinson and Mike Dench the deputies.

There is a working party at Grey Mist Mere this Saturday removing weed and there is no need to feel left out as we have plenty of weed rakes to go round and a skip is ordered for Saturday morning.  Those who book on for Friday night should be off the water by 8am at the latest unless they intend to volunteer as work starts at 9am.  Please note that the fishery is closed and working party members only can fish on Saturday night.

You need real stamina to fish the Mount as Paul Roberts will testify as on his night sessions last Friday and Saturday sport was so hectic he had to reel his rods in by 2am to get some much needed sleep. He managed twenty seven carp which included ten doubles, the best at 16lbs. All fell to boilies fished in open water.

Mike Pritchard enjoyed his session on Statham Pool on Saturday when fishing a light waggler one and a half rods out he ended his session with sixty fish. He started catching roach, skimmers, and hybrids to 12ozs using pinkie or red maggots but a swap to casters started to bring on the better roach and included a chub and decent mirror carp.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished at Walton this week saw John Dagnall take the winner's purse with 4-8-3. He included a proper bonus fish in his catch by way of a 4lbs plus bream to which he added a few roach. There is no truth whatsoever in the rumour that second placed Ron Durr on the next peg who weighed 1-9-14 was praying for a break. Angler's catches for the most part were made up of the occasional skimmer bream, roach, and gudgeon, but not a single perch showed.

I visited High Legh Fisheries on Sunday to put up a WAA sign and just chanced to have my tackle and some bait in the car so it was a no brainer. I had the place to myself and the reason soon became obvious as other anglers had obviously seen the weather reports because no sooner had I set up and a gale blew up with the usual driving rain. I stuck with it, feeding micro-pellet and maggot on a now much reduced pole line I hung on for grim death until after a few minutes my float dipped and a nice rudd had taken the treble maggot intended for carp. A dozen or so followed then it went dead and was soon daydreaming and trying to keep warm when my pole elastic shot out and my first carp around 6lbs or so was soon landed along with three others but I lost the best fish when it slipped the hook.

7th April 2015 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

7th April 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

It is not a state secret that Big Sandiway produces very large carp, tench, bream, and roach but I usually get belated reports seemingly as an afterthought.  Thankfully information is more forthcoming from anglers who favour the adjacent more prolific 17.5 acre water where Stephen Wharton last week reported catching two carp a mirror and a common around the 15lbs mark and lost a larger fish. He also had four bream averaging 4lbs all caught during an afternoon session last week on boilie over pellet.

Grey Mist Mere is starting to produce both tench and carp with the best reported a twenty pounder that looked a stunning fish. I gave it a go myself and fished by the car park but suffered my first and hopefully my last blank of 2015.

Neil Plunkett decided to try the Mount again following the blank he suffered on his last outing at the fishery and ended up with nine fish, seven carp made up of a couple of low doubles and the rest between about 5-8 lbs. However he also caught two cracking bream, one just over 6lbs the other marginally over 7lbs. but lost three other fish as the fish bolted into snags sending back bare hooks. He did however manage a double catch for as he was landing a bream his other rod went and he ended up with a small carp in the same net. Len Davies and his son enjoyed their Easter Sunday from the same venue with a mixed bag of carp, bream, and quality roach.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished at Keckwick Bridge and it looks like it was down to the draw bag as both winner and runner-up came from adjacent pegs. Bread specialist George Barber put together a skimmer and roach net taken on pole and punch for 3-8-12 followed by Trev Bainbridge who put 2-11-12 on the scales.

There is now one of our security locks fitted to High Legh Fisheries that should ensure that only members visit the waters. There were a lot of fish moving on my visit and I was tempted but had tackle but no bait with me. A lesson learnt.
