27th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

27th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match this week was changed to Tuesday because all the regulars wanted to attend and pay their respects at WAA member Billy Pickles funeral on Monday. I went along myself and Walton Crematorium was packed to the rafters. The eulogy was one of the best I have ever heard and summed Billy up to a tee promoting lots of knowing nods and smiles from those present. Our sympathies go to his wife and family at this sad time.

Tuesdays match was definitely down to the luck of the draw this week as anglers needed to draw to the right of the motorway bridge where the top four weights came from on pegs 2, 3, 4, and 5. Jeff Clare on peg 3 caught on both bread and pellet from two swims and was the clear winner with 7lbs and he was snapped by two decent fish. Alan Brown on the next peg was the runner-up with 4-13-8. The other two sections were won with 1-3-0 and 2-2, the latter being the only fish caught.

Our Mersey Saturday Sweepstake was won again this week by match organiser Ray Boden with a catch of two skimmers and small roach for 2-5-0.  Jim Gannon and Derek Bibby tied for the runner-up spot with 15-4 needless to say bites were few and far between.

Ed Frangleton raised the bar on the Sunday Series Mersey Match with a catch of four skimmers and a few roach for 3-1-0 followed closely by Derek Bibby in second place again with 2-9-0.

The Pairs Match was fished on Saturday on the Trent & Mersey Canal near Wincham marina. The fish had retreated into the marina and the person to benefit from a marina mouth draw was Mike Dench. He caught consistently from the off putting a nice mixed bag of mainly roach with a few skimmers on the scales for a weight of 7-5-0. George Barber on the next peg to was second with 4-5-5 and Jeff Stoll made the most of an end peg to snatch a few perch late on to add to some stocky roach for third place with 2-8-0. All three were in 'B' section, giving Martin Griffiths a triple-default section win with 2-5-6. 'A' section was a different affair completely, Lenny Dutton making the most of the conditions to win the section with 1-13-1, edging both Jeff Shaw and Jon Andrews into joint second with 1-10-4 apiece.

Mike Dench and Jon Andrews were the top pair on the day with their 3 point score but still leading the series at the half way stage are Graham Belton and George Barber on 22 points.

Please note there will be a working party at Grey Mist Mere on Saturday so if you fancy helping out your fellow members with general maintenance the guys will be on site from 8am.

20th January 2015 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

20th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our Mersey Saturday Sweepstake was won this week by match organiser Ray Boden with 15ozs made up of one roach and a skimmer bream. With just an ounce adrift Derek Bibby was in the runner-up spot with a catch of seven small roach for 14ozs and no doubt bitterly regrets losing a 4oz roach at the net.

Thankfully  catches showed some improvement the following day for our Sunday Series Match which saw local match ace Jimmy Byrne put four skimmers and a few roach on the scales for 3-0-0 to almost double the nearest weight. Martin Lenihan caught a couple of skimmers plus small roach for second place with 1-15-8.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday saw Derek Bibby chalk up another win from the Bridgewater Canal with an all roach net for 3-6-4. Bud Lee wasn't too far behind with a similar net for 2-11-8. Fished again on the Dead Length it was feast or famine with a fair number of 'did not weighs'. However for the interest of pike anglers there were quite a few roach that were taken on their way to the net by these toothy predators.

With thin ice on many of our stillwaters over the past few days fishing has been somewhat restricted but Phil Morgan managed a quick piking session on Grey Mist last weekend following advice gleaned from our Facebook page and caught two small jack-pike on dead baits both around the five pounds mark.

We are hoping to start the second phase of the micro-chalk treatment at the lake opposite the bungalow at Offa's Dyke Fisheries before the end of the month. A further two tons are on order to hopefully help reduce nutrients and siltation in the near future. Our local team that cover both here and The Moat are determined to turn this once neglected fishery around and have to date put many hours work in to help bring this about. There are no instant fixes.

There have been several instances in the past few months where someone has left the gate open at High Legh Fishery allowing the farmers sheep to escape. Well no more as the farmer has chained the access gate which will presently be replaced with one of our security locks. I would remind members that those failing to lock barriers or gates on any of our fisheries will lose their licence with no excuses.

13th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Another of the Gannon family took their first win of 2015 on our Mersey Saturday Sweepstake with 11-8 (five roach). This time it was Norman's turn closely followed by match organiser Ray Boden with 10-8 (seven roach. The Mersey Sunday Series Match was won by Ray Boden with seven roach for 1-0-0 with Alan Morris in second place with three roach for 12-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday saw Graham Belton notch up his first win of the 2015 from the Dead Length on the Bridgewater Canal. Annually fish normally shoal here for the winter but on this occasion bites were hard to come by and Graham needed only 1-5-2 to take the top spot. Runner up was match regular Jimmy Byrne with an equally grim weight of 1-3-6. Only perch were caught, surely it can't get any worse.

A few of the newly stocked carp are being caught from Grey Mist Mere although not a lot is happening elsewhere to write home about despite good numbers of hopeful members on the banks of our different fisheries. One fishery stands out and that is the Mount at Buckley where there is a working on Sunday so whilst they are working on the car park the fishery is unfortunately closed as there is no other parking available..

Unless a miracle happens it looks as though the diving club survey planned for Saturday 17th January on Moore Quarry may not now going ahead at this time. Mat Brown from the diving club is looking at alternative arrangements.

Just a reminder to members that 2014 night permits expired at the start of this year meaning that those who wish to night fish from 1st January must first renew both permits. Bookings will not be taken on 2014 permit numbers.

6th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th January 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Jim Gannon certainly started off the New Year well by winning both the Mersey Saturday Sweepstake and Mersey Sunday Series matches. He fished groundbait feeder and maggot on both occasions taking his first win of 2015 with 3-13-0 made up of a bonus 13oz chub plus small roach and followed this the next day with a skimmer and roach catch of 4-12-0. Catches are slowly improving from those dire results before the Christmas holiday.

The River Mersey is producing steady sport with skimmers and roach although the larger bream are definitely off the feed. Jamie Timmis reports a good catch of roach, skimmers, and hybrids from the early pegs behind Grey Mist on feeder tactics and maggot which seems to be producing the best results for both match and pleasure anglers at the moment.

Last week the Disabled & Over 60's match had a low turnout but decent results as the canal was frozen for the most part so they paper pegged some generally little fished but ice free pegs at Preston Brook. George Barber took first place with a weight of 6-3-0 followed by Bud Lee with 4-4-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was again by popular request fished at Preston Brook and won by Lennie Dutton. I don't know how he does it but Lennie managed yet another end peg draw to put 5-4-0 of bream and roach on the scales which gave him a comfortable margin over second placed Ron Durr on 3-8-6.

Reasonable numbers of unseasonal tench are still being caught from Grey Mist Mere along with a few carp. Roach sport is poor due to cormorant predation.

On Saturday 17th January a diving club is coming to do an exercise on Moore Quarry and have offered to investigate any areas that cause issues or where there are 'snag pits'. The dive leader is a longstanding member and would like as much information and input from members as possible so they can map their dive plan. If time permits they may be able to remove snags and take some underwater camera footage if water clarity is sufficient.
