24th June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The new Saturday Mersey Sweepstake organised and run by Ray Bowden will be fished every week by the Kingsway North Allotments. The inaugural match winner was Jim Gannon who included a superb bream of 7-12-0 in his 12-4-0 catch. Runner-up was match organiser Ray with 7-1-8. With feed going in regularly on both Saturday and Sunday it will certainly attract fish to these areas and can only improve.

Lee Clarke won the 1st Association Contest fished on the Mersey with a cracking net of bream and skimmers for 13-15-0 caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Following up in second spot was Neil Davies who snared two bonus bream fishing the same method for 11-5-0. The river was low and clear so not too bad a result despite the not exactly ideal conditions.

Morgan Adawee won the Holston Cup junior contest fished annually on Ackers pit with 4-6-0 of roach despite losing a carp that

Unfortunately small fish dominated our Disabled & Over 60's match on the same river but there was a real gem to the proceedings when Bud Lee caught a grayling of 8 to 10" in length. According to match organiser John Dagnall the capture in itself made up for the lack of bites. For the record aside from the lady of the river only small perch were caught with Trev Bainbridge the winner with 2-10-6 followed by Graham Belton 2-8-0. Well, not quite the full story as it was rumoured that Geoff Brooks fished paternoster and lugworm to catch a small dab!

Jim Griffiths and his dad Steve negotiated the rutted track at Worthenbury on the opening of the coarse fishing season on the 16th to find the River Dee conditions absolutely perfect. Jim had 13 grayling to 1.5lbs plus 4 trout and a dace whilst Steve managed 3 chub and would have had more but he was too engrossed watching the barbell spawning.

Please note there is a working party on Grey Mist Mere on Saturday all welcome. Meet car park 8-30am onwards. Please note members fishing Friday night must leave the working area on the left hand side of the fishery by 8am.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

17th June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Well the river season opened on Monday and first reports are looking good Phil Hancock had a four hour session on the Mersey and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of early season sport.  His catch included a dozen skimmers between 1 and 1.5lbs, a bream which of at least 6lb and plenty of roach and perch all on maggot feeder. Match catches were good too with plenty of  bream to 7lb and nice mixed nets of chub, hybrids, perch and roach also on maggot.
Geoff Maddock decided after much pestering from his daughter Madonnaraye that she was old enough for a fifth birthday angling trip. The venue Offa's Dyke fishery where she had a nice catch including a decent chub and a common carp of about 3lb safe to say she can't wait for her next outing.  Ian Williamson also chose this fishery for is first outing of the season, in a two hour session on the middle pool corn fed tight to the island produced nothing for half an hour then  suddenly game on, a chub of about 2lb took his pole elastic out full stretch. This was followed by a mixture of twenty chub, bream to 3lb and a carp of about 6lb.
Eric Smith visited Sandiway for the first time on Sunday just for a look he was so delighted with the lakes that he and his grandson 12year old Callum Postill and mate Terry `Fishless' Fletcher decided to have a few hours fishing.  They raked their pegs and balled in twelve balls of groundbait each laced with corn and hemp.  Callum and Eric shared a peg, first cast Callum had a new PB bream of 5.9lbs  they finished up with five more bream around 5lb a tench of similar size and an 8lb mirror. Fishless was overjoyed with a mirror about 7lb. All fish caught on hair rigged corn or mini boilies.
Sandiway small lakes is also a favourite venue for Mark Atchison for his target  tench,  fishing two artificial maggots on a hair rig and two live maggots on the hook he also landed a pristine roach of 2.5lb. There are plenty of quality fish in this water although often described as carp water it should never be overlooked for quality specimens of most of our other native species too.

10th June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Congratulations to our Woodshaw Junior Squad who won the Manchester CADG Series with a total of 7 points over the four matches and an accumulative weight of 18.36kg. Runners up on 8 points and a total weight of 15.03kg was Heywood AC. Many thanks to our coaches Bob Morris, Bob Slater, and Mike Rudd.

Likewise congratulations to our Ladies National Team of Linda Cooke, Emma Drysdale, Pat Geary, and Wendy Locker who took the bronze medal in the Angling Trust Ladies National Championships on Saturday. Linda was 5th overall so has qualified for a place in the Ladies Fishomania Final.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday saw Warrington Anglers Vice President Geoff Brooks take his first win of the year in this popular weekly series with 3-6-0. It was a close run thing at the scales that saw veteran match angler Jimmy Byrne weigh in only an ounce short with 3-5-0.

Gary McCarthy reports an enviable catch from Cicily Mill Pool in the shape of the famous but illusive Cicily Common. The fish weighed in at 33.3lbs in the net so the fish is still maintaining its size despite its venerable age. He caught it whilst set up for tench with 10lbs mainline and 8lbs hook link with a hair-rigged mini-boilie at the business end. Gary also had 6 tench averaging 4lbs plus 3 bream around the 3lbs mark. Gary, I know of a number of members who will be tearing their hair out in frustration who have been after this carp icon for many years. On Thursday Les Sherratt landed a nice crucian of 2-6-0 from this shallow but fish filled water.

An increasing number of members seem to think that our rules do not apply to them and that it is perfectly in order to leave our fishery barriers open. Well, rest assured if caught it carries a definite ban. Do you really want to gamble with your fishing not only in our waters but with the eight clubs in the North West who are equally adamant that none of us want such persons as members'? Your choice!

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 3rd June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd June 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

This past week fish have  still been spawning at various waters and some pegs were made off limits but despite this often necessitating in immediate closures all members cooperated fully. I have only had reported one spawning casualty so far so everything is crossed.

It is not uncommon for fish to be stressed post spawning and coupled with the hectic breeding ritual during which their protective mucus takes a real hammering it is understandable that they can become susceptible to parasites.  Members should report any signs immediately and if possible take a few photographs.

Hot off the press and just as I was finishing up my column David Poole had just finished his fishing at Grey Mist Mere. Something wrong there!!! However he was made up with his session which included a new PB mirror of 13.35lbs and one of 12.85lbs. Both fish fell for balanced squid flavour boilies. David had more runs but lost fish in the weed which has now become a problem.  The club will be carrying out some selective control.

Phil Hancock reports landing his PB tench at 10-14-0 from Moore Quarry when it succumbed to his method feeder and sweetcorn approach. He lost two others plus a third at the rim of the landing net that he reckoned was even bigger than his new PB.

Carping mad teenager Lewis Harmes had as he describes it, "A blinding session on the Mount" when he visited the fishery with his mate Dan that saw the duo land ten carp between them. Lewis had a cracking common of 23lbs and another at 18lbs, the others were all around the 10lbs mark.

Night fishing has been put back on the Mount after being withdrawn due to pegs being submerged as a result of this year's monsoons. It will be restricted to only four anglers for the time being and can only be booked for a single night from Monday to Thursday inclusive. We will reappraise the situation as more pegs become fishable.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday saw Derek Bibby take the honours with a 10-5-0 net which included two bream that accounted for 8lbs.  Lenny Dutton was not too far behind with a similar catch for exactly 10lbs. At the end of this month or thereabouts the mystery is that these large bream will seemingly vanish and be absent from match catches until April/May next year.
