27th May 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th May 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Nobody could have possibly predicted the results of our Disabled & Over 60's re-arranged match on Tuesday that saw match organiser John Dagnall's astounding win prevent Jimmy Byrne from competing a hat trick of three consecutive wins. John had over 2lbs to spare with a cracking net of 7-13-8 against second placed Jimmy's 5-1-3. The match did not start too well when a boat full of well inebriated crew went through every peg and then crashed into the bridge taking out a lump of concrete.

David Poole and Phil Hunt chose Bank Holiday Monday to try out our popular Cicily Mill Pool where even at 5am there were a good number of anglers who had beaten them to it, and by 8am it was full. Undeterred Phil ended up with a PB crucian of just over 2lbs that fell to a small cube of curry flavoured Spam before they decided to try another venue, possibly quieter. They plumped for Rixton Claypits where the curried spam came into play again that saw them catch tench to 5lbs and just short of finishing for the day David's carp rod which hadn't given a bleep for five hours suddenly came alive. He hit into a solid take which he said felt like a car on the other end and could have been his first Rixton carp had the hook not pulled out! Someone who did manage to land one of the illusive Claypits carp is member Mark Lindley who reports a common of 23lbs caught on Saturday.

Tench sport has quietened down this past week on Grey Mist Mere but nevertheless I watched Chris Neden catch two cracking olive skinned beauties with one weighing in at 7-12-0 to add to two he caught earlier on feeder fished red maggot. A few carp are also being caught but nothing to write home about.

Tony Rough reports a couple of good sessions on the Mount, the first on the pole in 12 feet of water when he caught a succession of roach and skimmer's. The following evening he set his stall out for a different approach on the tip in torrential rain. The weather was soon forgotten after his first bite following which he couldn't stop catching quality roach, bream, and the odd perch. A few decent carp to just over 20lbs and quality tench also reported by bailiff Brian Jones.

The penultimate round of our Spring League was fished on an out of sorts Sankey St Helens Canal at Spike Island on Saturday. It fished really hard which suited Phil Cross who won with 2-4-3 and Jeff Stoll came second with 1-13-0. The result saw Phil after trailing Bob Campbell by one point throughout the series turn the tables with himself now having that vital one point lead. It is a two horse race with the final match on the Bridgewater Canal on the 21st June.

Just a reminder that members only are allowed on our waters where there is no public right of access. The only proof of membership is a paid up membership booklet which all members must be able to produce at all times when visiting these waters whether fishing or not. There are no exceptions, this goes for all members, committee and bailiffs, it is no big deal and it assists bailiffs to ensure only bona fide persons are present. It is for your protection.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

20th May 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th May 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of long time member Arthur Hankinson aged 64 years who was cremated on Monday. The order of service was replaced with a pictorial booklet of his life that certainly brought back many fond memories for those present. Arthur served on our management committee for many years where he worked selflessly to make angling better for other Warrington Anglers members. Nothing was too much trouble for him, his classic reply when asked to do any job was, "I can't promise, but I'll see what I can do." True to type he always found a way to fit it in around work and family. To those that knew him Arthur was simply one of those nice guys who loved his family, his work, and would do anything for anybody. At this time our condolences go out to his wife Viv and family. Any donations will go to the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Due to spawning fish some pegs or fisheries may be closed without notice. As responsible anglers we all have a duty of care to our quarry at this time. No anglers should be attempting to catch spawning fish and anyone caught under such circumstances will be reported by bailiffs and members.

A member was banned this week for two years and must re-apply for membership for disregarding our rules. His biggest insult was to members who had spent two days clearing up at Grey Mist when he decided to not only drink a bottle of lager but leave the empty in the bushes. Be warned the next one caught will go for good.

The Sankey St Helens Canal at Carterhouse rarely gets a mention despite the fact that it is stuffed fish quality fish. Well Ralph Bennett had a cracking evening session last Friday when armed with half a pint of maggots and a handful of casters he caught around fifty fish. He fished a small waggler a rod and a half out for a procession of mainly rudd in the 2 – 4ounce range but the best approaching a pound, a carp around 3lbs, and 4 eels to 2lbs. He packed up a very happy chappie.

It looks like Gary Myerscough's luck was in when he fished Grey Mist this past week, kicking off with a 5-30am start he set his stall out for tench. By the end of his session at 11-30am he had caught fourteen of the olive green beauties including a new PB of 7-9-0. His visit was marred however when some of the fish had mouth damage due to careless handling. Hopefully the new initiative organised by Gav Astley and backed up by caring members will put an end to this. The aim is to promote good fish care through developing angling skills by drawing on the vast depth of knowledge of other members. Email Gav for details at onegav@btinternet.com.

The results of our Disabled & Over 60's re-arranged match on Monday improved this week as winner Jimmy Byrne tempted a few bream from his end peg for a clear win with 8-1-0. The next three weights were close but he still had 5lbs to spare against second placed Geoff Brooks on 2-14-0 from the opposite end peg.

Please note that due to the Bank Holiday this next week's Junior/Intermediate and Minnows teach-in (absolute beginners) will be held on Tuesday at Phoenix Park Lake, meet 6pm on car park.

13th May 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes 13th May 2014

Sandiway small lake is really producing the goods for a number of members, Ste Wharton Aka bigtreeste the tree surgeon booked on for a three day stint on big Sandiway, after spotting fish moving on the small lake he luckily managed to rebook his remaining two nights on the small lake.
The first peg he fished had just been vacated by a member who had caught four carp to 24lb and gave Ste all the info needed. So fishing pva bags of pellet and crushed boilie with hi viz pop ups on the hook within an hour he had a lovely 16lb common followed by two more carp, eight tench up to 7lb6oz, and four bream during the night.
His swim went quiet and he spotted a lot of carp crashing near the far bank, he packed up next morning and moved to the spot and added a further 11 carp and 4 more tench to his catch. The biggest carp were 21 and 26lb with a total tally of fourteen carp,12 tench and four bream. Ste commented "what a great water little Sandiway is with a little effort the rewards are there to be had".

Meanwhile at Grey Mist Mark Lindley reported a mirror ( Houdini?) of 27lb 8oz. The fish had been caught a month earlier at 26lb8oz the increase verified on two sets of scales. It was caught close in by the weed and the irony is his Dad hooked it on his son's rod but being an absolute gentleman in true Grey Mist spirit handed the rod over to his son to play and land the fish. Isn't that what Dad's are for?

Our head bailiff at Buckley (The Mount) where there is an awful lot of work going on at the moment reports lots of single figure carp being caught from the back pool. Ian Grayson caught 11 carp best 13lb 8oz from the first peg on the car park using floaters. This water is well worth a visit.

It's sister water Offa's Dyke pools just  ten or twelve minutes away is looking well but is still a work in progress, fish are being caught and surprisingly a few chub have featured in catches.
It might suit some members at present but trust me by year end all being well it will be vastly improved.
There is a working party on Sunday just general tidying up and some weed removal, the plan is to work for a few hours then have a fish into the afternoon. Everyone welcome to come along, if you have chest waders that will be a big advantage if you fancy helping out, if not just come along and meet the lads and have a fish!

HQ is open every Friday evening from 7 pm to 9pm for new members, subscriptions, night permits, or just general information.

6th May 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th May 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Monday sees the start of our Junior/Intermediate Summer Series with the initial draw 6pm at Euclid Avenue. Similarly on Tuesday our Minnows  (absolute beginners) start, same time and place where if you fancy learning how to fish from top quality coaches which includes an England Ladies International, Helen Dagnall, then simply turn up on Tuesday.

More fish safely in the net, well you can sign me up after yet another blank at Moore Quarry! Seriously any member who fancies catching more fish safely should get in touch with Warrington Anglers' Gav Astley who is getting together a team of volunteer coaches and helpers from within the club. Drawing on their vast depth of knowledge and varied skills they should be able to advise and demonstrate most aspects of our sport. It intended to trial the first event at Grey Mist Mere and although the date is not yet fixed Gav would like to hear from interested members. You can email him at onegav@btinternet.com

Lee Chapman enjoyed his first three night session on Sandiway large lake when at 3am he caught a 25lbs mirror from 'No Fish Bay'. It was a new PB and he caught it on a chod rig fishing a sixty yards. A few decent tench specimens are also reported but the smaller 17acre lake has been producing more carp action.

David Poole and Chris McGuiness had as they described it, "Probably the best days fishing we have ever had" at Rixton Claypits on Sunday. They started off with a few tench to just under 5lbs and then the bream moved in and mugged any bait presented. They used their own concoction of method mix and switched their hook baits between maggots, corn, and soft pellets to catch bream ranging from 1lb to 5lbs and they stopped county at forty fish!

The Environment Agency Fisheries Team were out checking licences over the holiday weekend and found a number of anglers fishing without them including some at Rixton Claypits. It really is just not worth spoiling your day wondering just where and when you will be asked to produce it to a bailiff. It goes without saying that it is far cheaper purchasing one before you fish than paying a large fine plus court costs when caught.

Bob Campbell won our Spring League on Saturday with 3-9-0 ensuring himself of another single point that maintained his overall lead plus a few quid extra in his back pocket. Jeff Shaw was second with 3-7-0.

The results of our Disabled & Over 60's re-arranged match on Tuesday were again poor due to fish having other things on their minds, namely spawning. Veteran angler Stan Charnock found a few fish from his end peg draw near Keckwick Hill Bridge to clock up his first win of the year with 2-6-1. Mike Daniels was runner-up with only 15-10.

Our planting project got under way  at our Offa's Dyke Fishery on Saturday with over 150 marginal and other native plants sited and there are still as many again yet to do. The reported fish-in didn't turn up too many fish, a few bream, small roach, and several chub. There is still lots of work and stocking needed to bring this fishery up to an acceptable standard.
