29th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

What a difference seven days and a flood of cold water made to our Mersey Series as weights plummeted with not a single angler breaking the 2lbs mark.  However it was a close match as winner Roy Everson put 1-14-9 of feeder caught small roach and perch on the scales just nudging out one of Cadisheads finest Pete Jones on 1-14-0. The top four anglers all drew in the forties where the flow was a lesser pace than those who drew in the fifties where something approaching a 60gm feeder was needed to hold bottom close to the near bank.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was back on the Bridgewater Canal this week and turned out to be a good move for despite the fact that in last week's column I predicted that there would be no massive weights they turned out far better than the Mersey results. Graham Belton won the match with a weight of 7-5-9 of roach and perch plus a bonus specimen perch. Alan Brown was runner up with a 5-9-12 all roach net.

The first round of our pairs series was fished on Saturday at the Scholar Green stretch of the Macclesfield Canal. There were plenty of bites to be had from mainly small fish but individual winner Bob Campbell still managed to put 7-9-8 of punch bread caught roach on the scales to win this inaugural match. Second placed Craig Lowndes was less than an ounce adrift with 7-8-14 that consisted of three large perch and a few silver fish although he no doubt cursed his bad luck as he lost two big perch that were coming to the net. Top pair was Mike Savage and Craig Lowndes.

Appleton Reservoir is still producing fair catches with Junior National Squad member Morgan Adawee being rewarded with a specimen roach of 2-3-0 along with a smaller fish that took a ledgered boilie intended to target the waters carp stocks. He also landed three carp. Pike angers have been out in force on the Mersey where one member reported a magnificent fish of 17-6-0 from the seventies peg area.

21st October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Sundays Mersey Series saw well known match man Derek Bibby put a mixed perch and roach catch on the scales for 10-7-0 and a decisive win fishing pole and maggot at 13metres in some slack water on peg 62. The river was carrying extra water and some really struggled for bites but match organiser Ant Higham, AKA 'King of the River' was in runner-up spot with 6-8-0 caught on the tip. He just edged out Ray Bowden by an ounce who reckoned that he dropped a 2ounce perch off at the net which in real terms cost him the equivalent of £10 per ounce, ouch!

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was again fished on the Mersey and saw Derek Bibby absolutely on fire and notch up yet another win annihilating any opposition with an all bream catch of 25-7-0 taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. His weight would have been much higher as he lost three large slabs off the hook. Stan Charnock was second with 4-1-10. The match next week is back on the Bridgewater Canal so I doubt any massive weights there but it is just as competitive.

If you are visiting our Ribble Fishery and wish to park at Trough House Farm please note that you must have a WAA car park sticker plainly displayed on your vehicle and also be prepared to produce your EA and WAA licences to the owner and fellow member who allows us to park at his farm. If you cannot comply you will not be allowed to use the car park. This has come about as usual by the actions of a few people spoiling it for decent members and amongst other things bringing non-members to the fishery.

The Offa's Dyke management team have really put an immense amount of work into this recently acquired fishery and both pools are now open to members from Wednesday 23rd October. Because of the close proximity to a dwelling please keep noise to a minimum and respect residents. The times are restricted to 7-30am to one hour after sunset. Parking only on car park by pool one. No keepnets and barbless hooks only. I would appreciate any catch reports as the team are assessing current stocks which are an unknown quantity. I have spotted good numbers of fish and our Chairman has fished Pool two with pole and pellet and caught some decent roach and half a dozen carp around the 6lbs mark.

Many thanks to the three members who turned out to the working party and clean-up on Saturday at Grey Mist Mere.

15th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Phil Hancock fished the River Mersey for the first time on Monday and set his stall out fishing the quiver tip and a small groundbait feeder presenting maggot on the hook. He had a bite every cast but as he stated hitting them is a very different matter. Still he had a good net of fish which included roach, perch, small skimmers, and some of the biggest gudgeon he has caught in many a year. He experienced a lot of pike activity losing a number fish that were snatched off the hook, but most important is that there is now another Mersey convert.

Sundays Mersey Series saw Jeff Shaw's roach catch of 13-13-12 caught on long pole tactics give him a clear win with almost 6lbs to spare over second placed Ray Bowden on 7-15-0. The top four anglers all fished pole tactics where it seems more bites are converted to fish in the net as opposed to anglers using the feeder.

The Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Mersey again on Monday but the results were down slightly from the previous week. Veteran match angler Frankie Holden was the top rod with 6-0-0 of roach and perch followed by Derek Bibby with a similar net weighing 4-12-0.

Alan Robinson visited our pocket sized High Legh Fishery for the first time on Friday and was pleased with his catch of eight carp taken on pop-up boilies fished against the island. Although there was nothing remotely approaching double figures the fish gave a good account of themselves on his light feeder set-up.

Don't forget there is still a substantial reward offered that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for setting fire to the covered in working area at Grey Mist Mere over the weekend of 22/23 of September. On Saturday we are having a major clean-up around this fishery so anyone who wishes to help meet on the car park from 9am onwards.

8th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Stuart Peters made all the right enquiries early on Sunday morning and saw that the Wye was up a couple of foot and so desperate for some action after almost a 6 week lay-off he could hardly wait to get to the river. He was hopeful that this would make amends for his last trip fished on a hot July day and a low river when sort was poor. Well he was more than pleased as he finished his five hour session with 5 chub ranging from 3 to 4lbs, a barbel of 6lbs, several grayling around the pound mark including a new PB of 2.2lbs and a dozen dace and chublets and a trout for good measure. All fish were taken using groundbait/pellet feeder with pellet on the hook or bunches of maggots and a maggot feeder. As he said, "An enjoyable day after too long off the bank."

The Disabled & Over 60's match saw a change of venue on Monday to the Mersey and results speak for themselves and the fact they are there again next week. Jimmy Byrne took top spot with a mixed net of roach and perch for 7-2-6 and Alan Clarke followed with 6-7-2. Match organiser John Dagnall reckons that he would have been well in the money as he put 3.5lbs in the net but had more than that ripped off the hook by pike!

We have now joined in partnership with Northwich AA on a short stretch of Budworth Mere on the sailing club side. Maps will be available shortly of this and the Alyn at Caergwree. Please do not ring me up and ask for directions to the latter as although I have been I went a convoluted route courtesy of our local bailiff Mike Lewis, but there are notices up so if in the interim you can find it you can fish it.

For the information of those members who fish Fosters Pools please note that the C & D car park is unavailable to members for a short period as there are cattle in the field. Our lock has been temporarily removed and anglers using the fisheries will need to park carefully on the roadside.
