24th September 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th September 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Warrington Anglers Association are offering a cash reward for any information that helps to catch the mindless morons who in an act of sheer vandalism lit a fire at the side of our site containers at Grey Mist Mere sometime between Saturday and Tuesday morning.

Member Steve Kelly was well pleased with a new personal best roach of 2-15-0 he caught from Sandiway small lake on Sunday morning. Although he was using carp gear and roach were definitely not his target fish he was none the less chuffed at this cracking specimen that took a 10mm pineapple pop-up boilie presented in a PVA bag of pellet. As Steve said, it just goes to prove that there are specimens other than carp in this fishery.

We now have a new 2013 Mersey Champion in the winner of our Sunday match Jeff Shaw who put 13-6-10 of mainly roach and perch on the scales to finish over 2lbs clear of runner up Derek Bibby on 11-1-3. All the first four weights were taken on pole tactics outscoring those who prefer fishing a quiver tip as sadly for them the big bream just did not feed. There were a few hard luck stories such as Bob Campbell who reckoned he matched the winner fish for fish on the adjoining peg only to see a pike attack and rip open his net towards the end of the event causing him to lose over half of his catch.

I actually dusted off my gear but with only two pegs left in the bag I drew a bummer that was so shallow my float struggled to cock. Still I had a £1side bet with Ant Higham in similar straights on the next peg. Ant (AKA King of the River) hasn't won since Adam was a lad so halfway through I did the decent thing and gifted him the coin.

The Disabled & Over 60's Monday match on the Bridgewater Canal was a walkover for committee member Graham Belton who with a couple of pound in the net decided to fish close in on just three sections of pole to rest his swim to after a few boats had passed. Fishing caster he had a couple of perch then thought he had caught the bottom. However soon the bottom erupted and a large carp surfaced at which point he panicked knowing he was using only 0.12 line and 20's hook but after what seemed like an age with the carp plodding about his swim the beast swam into his keep net and gave up. The upshot was that at the weigh-in the fish was too big for the scales basket and the general consensus was to allow him 12lbs for the carp giving him a 14lbs total.

17th September 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th September 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Mersey weights are down this week but still very respectable considering the conditions on Sunday. The top weights came to pole tactics with winner Bob Brander putting 9-12-0 of roach and perch on the scales for a comfortable win. Bob broke his pole during the match so his winnings were some consolation.  Match regular Paul Harding reports landing a 9lbs bream on Tuesday whilst practising for the weekends Mersey Championship. A couple of those in the net and its game over!

Following on from England Ladies Team recent World Championship win in Slovenia it is great news that Drennan Team England also won gold in their event this last weekend in Warsaw, Poland. It certainly has been a good year for England on the international scene so well done to all concerned.

The Disabled & Over 60's Monday match on the Bridgewater Canal was a close run affair and again saw lots of small fish being caught. The winner George Hollis had a couple of bonus skimmers in his net of 2-10-6 to just edge match ace Jimmy Byrne by a mere ounce.

A team from St Chads School, Widnes led by teacher Dale Blackburn started a new joint initiative with WAA on Monday at our Phoenix Park fishery. Their team of teachers and students have kindly planned to make improvements over following weeks by clearing litter, improving pegs, and to generally have a positive impact on the water and surrounding area. Hopefully they will find some time to also fit some fishing into their schedule.

Recently several members visited a stretch that WAA previously rented on the River Calder giving the excuse to the owner that it was in our map book. Members should note that our definitive list of fisheries available to members is as clearly stated and set down on page one of the annual membership booklet and not the map book. The latter is only printed every four or five years due to cost.

3rd September 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd September 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Just when I thought match weights on the Mersey had peaked with last week's excellent set of decent results it's just got better and better. On our Sunday Series event regular Paul Harding fishing a feeder put a net of bream and skimmers on the scales from peg seventy two for the best weight so far this season of 20-15-13. Runner up with another cracking weight was match ace and successful England Ladies Team manager Dave Brookes with a perch and roach catch taken on the pole for 15-10-0. Match organiser Ant Higham fished in the worst performing section and was absolutely nowhere with 6lbs!

As a result of seeing the reported match weights local member Kyle Tilbury decided that it was about high time he paid the Mersey a visit. He wasn't to be disappointed on his first fishing trip to this local river fishery which is almost on his doorstep. Using a maggot feeder cast half way across he ended up with a fish every chuck and a grand tally of 54perch, 5 roach, and a skimmer bream. He states that he will definitely be returning to the river.

The Disabled & Over 60's Monday match on the Bridgewater Canal may not be producing the big Mersey weights but there are lots of small fish being caught which looks good for the canals future. Committee member Graham Belton who had 11lbs on the river the previous day won this week with 3-2-4 and Lenny Dutton second with 3lbs but with only 8ounces separating the top four results it was a really close run thing and just as much an adrenalin rush when you think that you are in with a shout.

Graham Oakes only re-joined Warrington Anglers Association this week after a long lay-off and tried the Dane where in the low water conditions he suffered somewhat of a grueller missing his only decent bite. After a re-think the next day he headed for Cicily Mill Pool where he had not visited for twenty years or more. Fishing a peg halfway on the right hand bank he started on tipped corn over hemp and pellets in the morning and changed later to the waggler on the same bait for 4 bream between 2-4lbs, 7 good stamp crucians all estimated at over 2lbs, plus roach and hybrids. He commented, 'Great day, great water.'

The at Offa's Dyke Fisheries working party is on again this Sunday, meet 9am on the car park. Location postcode is CH7 4LQ which is just short of the farm gateway by a few hundred yards but is adjacent to traffic lights where the road narrows to single carriageway.
