27th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Even better weights all round this week on our regular members Mersey Series match on Sunday that saw Jeff Shaw put 15-5-0 on the scales for a decisive win. His roach and perch catch were taken on the pole alternating between maggot and caster. Roy Everson was the runner-up with 10-14-0 just edging out Ste Featherstone by a two ounce margin. Nineteen anglers fished which was the best turnout so far this season and reflects the improved catches.

Still on the Mersey which is producing some quality bream catches from behind Grey Mist Mere with the chance of a carp or two if you set your stall out right. The bad news is that we have poachers again despite the extra attention given by the Environment Agency and our members. Don't forget the EA can only have any chance of success if members ring in and report such instances immediately on the 0800 807060 emergency number and not hours later. This has to be a joint effort and so far working together has brought about a good number of prosecutions. Most of you have an idea of who is responsible so let's get it sorted.

We have had four carp deaths over the past week or so at Moore Quarry and quite rightly members are concerned but it must be remembered that the vast majority of the fish in this water were introduced illegally in the first instance from the Bridgewater canal many years before WAA rented it and therefore they are quite old fish being of an unknown age when first moved. No other species is affected however the situation is being monitored.

The at Offa's Dyke Fisheries working party is still on again this Sunday, meet on the car park at 9am on Sunday CH7 4LQ postcode is just short of the gateway by a few hundred yards but is adjacent to traffic lights where the road narrows to single carriageway. These volunteers are giving up their time and working for you so why not turn up and lend a hand.

Keep sending in your catch reports which are invaluable to this column and fellow members. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9-00pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

20th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ian Gregory was in for a treat when he fished at popular Woodshaw Reservoir for the first time despite being a longstanding member he now knows just what he has been missing all these years. He fished two lines on the pole at 8 and 13metres using a different approach to the local experts, simple bread punch and sloppy liquidised loaf to net twelve crucians, seven bream, three tench, and lots of suicidal roach.

Al Morris followed his two back to back runner-up spots in our Mersey Series with a well deserved win with a10-1-0 net of perch and roach caught from peg 22 fishing maggot and short pole tactics. He was 2.5lbs clear of runner up Ste Featherstone who weighed in 7-9-0 fishing the stick float. There were plenty of good back-up weights so if members fancy trying their luck match on a river our organiser Ant Higham will both take your money and make you welcome.

Worthington Reservoirs at Wigan are really producing good sport with bream and roach to both feeder and slider tactics. Ian Sloan enjoyed his day ticket session of a nineteen all bream catch so much that he ended up joining Warrington Anglers the following day. Definitely worth a visit.

The working party at Offa's Dyke Fisheries is still ongoing and the small band of volunteers whose works so far have been a real slog and involved a mixture of removing lots of self seeded trees, weed clearance, and even bridge building. Members keep asking when it will be open well the truth is the working party members really could do with a hand to speed up the fisheries opening. They are almost there but your help and muscle would really be appreciated. Also they particularly need anyone who is licensed to use a chainsaw to remove trees from the islands. You will be fed and watered and made welcome. Meet on the car park at 9am on Sunday CH7 4LQ postcode is just short of the gateway by a few hundred yards but is adjacent to traffic lights where the road narrows to single carriageway.

13th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

All match results have improved this week and the Mersey where anglers really struggled early in the season has now settled down to provide consistent sport. Ray Bowden showed his mastery fishing the pole and notched yet another win with a mixed net10-3-0 and almost 2lbs clear of runner up Al Morris. Forth placed Paul Hitchen managed the eerie weight of 666!

Disabled & Over 60's winner George Barber included a bonus bream of 3.5lbs in his winning weight of 5-8-12 and the Minnows Series saw more fish come to the scales with Andrew Carman taking the top spot with 4-1-0 and Ethan Owen not too far behind on 3-11-5.

Ian Robinson reports catch of eleven carp taken on floating bred crust from High Legh Fisheries. Whilst the best fish was estimated at only 8lbs they gave a good account of themselves as he was using a 13ft waggler rod and 4lbs hook length. You either love or hate this tiny fishery but there is one thing for sure it is set in nice surroundings and is capable of good sport on the day.

Although his first visit to Ackers Pit the fishery is George Deakins idea of Eldorado, handy parking and plenty of sport. Fishing a light waggler and alternating between 6mm pellet and maggot he estimated that he had a mixed net of tench, roach, perch, and four carp of about 4lbs apiece. The roach are really plump and along with the tench which have bred, the latter evident by the small olive green 'bars of soap' that are being caught. Our peg improvement is ongoing with our small band of working party volunteers. If you fancy helping on this project or anything else for that matter please get in touch and I will pass on you details to committee member Reg Lewis

6th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Sunday morning Chris Grehan gave the club an insight into what the middle of the three pools at Offa's Dyke Fisheries can produce. It had not been fished for some considerable time as I understand and Chris drafted in at short notice was only armed with a few pellets. Nevertheless within a few minutes he was ripped off and immediately beefed up his end tackle. He ended up with four carp to 6lbs and around forty roach to just over a pound. One down and two to go! Although not yet open to members I will keep you informed.

The working party have formed a management group for this complex and the Mount at Buckley which is close by. If you fancy getting involved in the work on the pools just turn up at 9am on Sunday morning. Post Code CH7 4LQ and entrance gate on the right by the traffic lights.

Anthony Simpson reports catching a fin perfect mirror carp of 19-8-0 from Moore Quarry on Sunday. It fell for a pink boilie fished in the margin. He also spotted some really large tench and bream during his session. Another member landed a bream of 7-2-0.

There are a couple of anglers that have started targeting the tiny River Gowy with some quite pleasing results. A quiet approach and changing swims as bites slowed saw some nice roach and perch come to the net. This river definitely does hold a few surprises.

The Mersey match on Sunday saw an upturn in catches with winner Roy Everson putting a bream and roach catch on the scales for 13-7-0.  You needed double figures to get in the money.

Worthington Lakes are worth a trip because with catches of thirty plus bream and quality roach you will soon forget about the walk to Adlington or Arley, although the latter is the one producing the bream to maggot and feeder tactics.  The walk is on flat well surfaced paths so just take a trolley or simply what you need and not the kitchen sink.
