22nd January 2013 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

22nd January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Nor surprisingly all the matches advertised in last weeks column were cancelled due to adverse weather condition. Despite this a few diehards still turned up and found places free of ice where they could wet a line. At the time of going to press there are some fishable areas on the Bridgewater Canal, with the Mersey, Moore Quarry, and Appleton Reservoir ice free.

On Sunday I saw a couple at Preston Brook practicing in vain for their regular Disabled & Over 60's series. George Barber wearing his distinctive head gear and his pal John Barton had found a fishable length free of ice opposite what used to be the Neptune Moorings Club, now that's going back a bit as now it is an apartment block, same building but different use. George was pulling out roach and skimmers on the pole at 10metres using punch bread whilst John was initially struggling although fishing the same method. In fact it took a few hours before he starting catching and then the fish were literally queuing up to be caught.

The same day Mersey mad duo Ant Higham and Paul Harding with their match cancelled had bait to use up and nothing better to do so they fished the opposite bank opposite the 'magpies circle.' I'm banking on all but a couple of locals sussing out where this is because I have received a death threat if I reveal the exact whereabouts. Both fished the feeder but bites were finicky in the hard winter conditions and not coming exactly thick and fast. However using maggot or bread punch they ended up with seventeen fish between them. Not bad for a river brim full of freezing snow water.

The Appleton Reservoir working party last Saturday was snowed off as only Reg Lewis and I were mad enough to turn out. Still it wasn't time wasted as we mulled over work that we thought was required. A few members have been in touch and expressed an interest so it will be re-scheduled when the weather improves. We simply want to get the place buzzing again as it was pre-trout fishing days.

It is with great sadness that I must report the death last Tuesday of John Weedon. John was a well known and respected angling journalist who on his annual visits to our HQ was always good for a laugh with tales from his numerous fishing trips to Ireland. He served on a number of angling committees and organisations over the many years that I have known him, always giving honest but forthright views in the development and protection of our sport. Our condolences go out to his family who have requested no flowers but donations may be made to the Christie Charity. His funeral is at 12-30pm on Friday, 25th January at Abram Church followed at 1-30pm by cremation at Ince.

15th January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our Warrington Local Winter League on Saturday was a case of feast or famine with the pegs on the 'cave' in Lymm Village producing some decent bream and roach to produce a close individual result with the top five weights coming from that section. Neil Davies topped the leader board with 7-15-0 followed by Ste Hirst on 7-3-4. In the teams there was a tie on points with Bob's Lot and Saints both on sixteen but Cheshire Gold are still the overall leaders on eighty four with a six point lead over Saints.

Paul Harding made it his tenth win of the season on the Sunday Mersey event with 2-1-0 made up of small fish taken using a small groundbait feeder in dire conditions. I can only hope that catches improve before the end of the season.

The Disabled & Over 650's match fished on Monday between the Red Lane Bridge and the 'Dead Length' again saw lots of small fish being caught. Winner Derek Bibby had a mixed net of small skimmers and roach for 4-3-12 closely flowed by Eddie Cooke with a similar catch just 4drams lighter on 4-3-8, in other words another small fish would have reversed the positions it was that close. Pole fished bread punch and squat accounted for most catches with lots of 2lbs plus nets of fish. I don't know how he does it but match organiser John Dagnall was again the subject of some leg pulling this week when he fished the first hour and a half of the match on the pole at five metres. Nothing wrong in that you may think but the fact is that he forgot the other sections of his pole and had to send home for them! Nevertheless he had just short of 2lbs of fish even with this self inflicted handicap!

Please note following my request for any catch details from our stretch of the River Calder which the committee have been evaluating I did not receive a single reply. Furthermore a search over the past two years on my emails also produced a negative result. Therefore the management committee have relinquished the rights on the water with immediate effect.

A working party has been arranged on Saturday, 19th January, at Appleton Reservoir. If anyone fancies helping out meet 10am on car park. We are looking at peg positions, clearance, and rubbish removal.

8th January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our Webmaster, Martin James managed a session on the River Dane at Holmes Chapel on Saturday and winkled out six or seven chub moving and changing swims after each fish. He tried paste, cheese, and meat but these baits only resulted in plucks and no positive bites, but a change to the staff of life, good old bread, saw instant results. All the fish were between 3 and 3.5lbs.

Good numbers of pike have been caught from many of our fisheries this past week but the star performer has been the Bridgewater Canal. Gary Foulds had a fish of 12-8-0 from Statham whilst Garry Whitehead managed a brace, best 9-8-0 from the Moore area but lost two at the net. The fish fell to float-fished mackerel and smelt. I believe an eighteen pounder has been caught from Statham but no further details.

Our Wigan bailiff team report good catches of crucians and roach from Woodshaw Reservoir with even a few chub making an appearance. Please note our members entrance style has been boarded up to prevent trespassers bringing their dogs on the fishery and leaving their mess behind. Members with a key are unaffected and can enter by the locked gate.

The Disabled & Over 650's match fished on Monday between the 'Toast Rack' Bridge and the 'Dead Length' saw lots of small fish caught which if they survive looks promising for the future. Veteran matchman George Hollis had an all perch catch of 3-7-4 to take first place followed by George Barber not too far behind on 3-4-8, all small skimmer bream. I don't usually mention third but it is extremely rare for match organiser John Dagnall to be in the coin, he was joint third with 2-14-12.  This was some small consolation as he dropped his third pole section in the canal during the match. Attempts to recover the lost section only resulted in two manhole tops and tree branches.

Warrington Anglers popular members Facebook page has undergone a purge of non-members. Over sixty with no current payment record or clear identity have been removed this past week. If anyone has been inadvertently removed please message us with your member details.

A working party has been arranged at Grey Mist Mere on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. If anyone fancies helping out meet 10am on car park.

1st January 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Friday in a joint exercise at Winsford Angler's Ocean Pool with both theirs and Lymm AC netting team members we obtained a further 118 mirror carp to around the twelve pounds mark which we released into Appleton Reservoir. This brings the total introduced to 261 not forgetting the existing albeit small original resident stock. We are currently awaiting a batch of roach and bream. These introductions have certainly stirred up the original residents not unlike what happened at our Mount Fishery when otherwise unknown specimen fish suddenly decided to feed. At the reservoir as reported last week there have been roach out to 2.5lbs and some quality perch.

The Mystery Pairs Match on Saturday saw Ros Wightman and his partner Lenny Dutton win the event with 6 points followed by Phil Cross and Martin Lenihan on 7 points. Bob Clough took the individual money with 6-9-0 with Graham Stokes in second place with 6-2-0.

Despite some anglers really struggling in a New Years Day match held in Lymm Village Ross Wightman wasn't complaining with his winning catch of 19-6-1 made up of skimmers and roach nor was Adam Harman who included a bream of 4.5lbs in his runner-up net of 12-5-8. Bob Clough was in the money again with 11-0-0.

The Disabled & Over 650's match fished at Keckwick Bridge was a one bite spectacular which resulted in a chub of 4-6-0 for winner Barry Holbrook. Galling for second placed Barry Chambers with his 2-3-4 net of small fish but that's fishing.

Don't forget that night permits expired on the 31stDecember 2012 and bookings will not be taken on 2012 issue permit numbers.
