22nd January 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Nor surprisingly all the matches advertised in last weeks column were cancelled due to adverse weather condition. Despite this a few diehards still turned up and found places free of ice where they could wet a line. At the time of going to press there are some fishable areas on the Bridgewater Canal, with the Mersey, Moore Quarry, and Appleton Reservoir ice free.
On Sunday I saw a couple at Preston Brook practicing in vain for their regular Disabled & Over 60's series. George Barber wearing his distinctive head gear and his pal John Barton had found a fishable length free of ice opposite what used to be the Neptune Moorings Club, now that's going back a bit as now it is an apartment block, same building but different use. George was pulling out roach and skimmers on the pole at 10metres using punch bread whilst John was initially struggling although fishing the same method. In fact it took a few hours before he starting catching and then the fish were literally queuing up to be caught.
The same day Mersey mad duo Ant Higham and Paul Harding with their match cancelled had bait to use up and nothing better to do so they fished the opposite bank opposite the 'magpies circle.' I'm banking on all but a couple of locals sussing out where this is because I have received a death threat if I reveal the exact whereabouts. Both fished the feeder but bites were finicky in the hard winter conditions and not coming exactly thick and fast. However using maggot or bread punch they ended up with seventeen fish between them. Not bad for a river brim full of freezing snow water.
The Appleton Reservoir working party last Saturday was snowed off as only Reg Lewis and I were mad enough to turn out. Still it wasn't time wasted as we mulled over work that we thought was required. A few members have been in touch and expressed an interest so it will be re-scheduled when the weather improves. We simply want to get the place buzzing again as it was pre-trout fishing days.
It is with great sadness that I must report the death last Tuesday of John Weedon. John was a well known and respected angling journalist who on his annual visits to our HQ was always good for a laugh with tales from his numerous fishing trips to Ireland. He served on a number of angling committees and organisations over the many years that I have known him, always giving honest but forthright views in the development and protection of our sport. Our condolences go out to his family who have requested no flowers but donations may be made to the Christie Charity. His funeral is at 12-30pm on Friday, 25th January at Abram Church followed at 1-30pm by cremation at Ince.
Don't forget your catch reports are invaluable to this column and fellow members. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9-00pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
