25th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Last week one of our members caught an 8lbs carp from Cicily Mill Pool and saved it from a grizzly fate as the fish was trailing a 3oz lead plus lead core and what looked like 30lbs line attached via a chod-rig. There really is no excuse for poorly made rigs as there is plenty of 'how it's done' stuff on the internet or friendly tackle shops. Don't be too proud to ask, and don't forget you can always put your name down for our carp class which is aimed at safe rig making and other tips. There is a proven need so if anyone fancies it please drop me an email or give me a ring.

Ian Harding made the most a let-up from the torrential rain for a quick trip to High Legh Fishery. He had no time to buy his usual maggots so made the most of what was to hand in his kitchen, yes, that back to basics favourite, bread.  He fed two whetted liquidised balls and fished bread flake on the hook over it.  He lost his first fish but beefed up his hook-length and ended up with nine carp to 3lbs and three small tench.

The Mersey Championship on Sunday was affected by the weather and flood conditions. Match organiser Ros Wightman had a good start to the event for as he was checking the time for shouting the 'all in' he dropped his mobile into the murky depths. He managed to retrieve it but the speaker doesn't work so I hope that he has a good text deal. Martin Griffiths joined the ranks of Mersey Champions with 6-8-0 well clear of runner up Adam Harman on 4-5-0.

It was a much smaller turnout for our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday, hardly surprising considering the weather. Veteran matchman Jimmy Byrne showed his mastery at the Stage Lane venue with a mixed net of roach and skimmers for 4-1-2. George Hollis and Alan Clarke tied for second with 2-6-10. Next Mondays venue is Daresbury Labs.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 18th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our Annual Intermediate, Junior, and Minnows prize presentation and buffet was held at Grappenhall Ex-Servicemen's Club on Saturday evening. Earlier in the day young anglers had teamed up with one of our regular helpers or organisers to make up teams for a fun match on the nearby Bridgewater Canal. Everyone went home with trophies and goody bags. Our grateful thanks go to all those who by their efforts made the series of matches and events throughout the year possible.

We have increasing numbers of members taking up carp fishing for the first time so to help them we are looking at organising a beginners and improvers carp class aimed at safe rig making, tackle, tactics, and fish welfare, the list could be endless depending on the uptake. A number of experienced carp anglers have volunteered to pass on their knowledge so if you are interested please drop me an email or give me a ring.

The Pike Anglers Club teach-in at Grey Mist Mere on Sunday was the best organised yet as on this occasion we used all the lake and most anglers caught several pike. The eight PAC coaches were excellent and brought along all the latest tackle, but sadly it was a missed opportunity for numbers attending were disappointing compared to previous years. However on the plus side those who made the journey had almost one to one personal tuition. Furthermore the following day I received an email from youngster Kyle Tilbury with a picture of himself and a pike captioned, "Just using the skills that the people here at Grey Mist taught me I have landed my first pike."

Dennis Bate won our weekly Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday with 6-13-0 of bream and roach followed by organiser John Dagnall who is definitely on a roll with 4-14-12. The successful method for both anglers was pole and caster.

Again the Mersey showed that anglers can frame on a variety of methods and that it is not simply an out and out feeder or pole fishery. Winner Paul Harding fished a feeder for an    11-9-0 net of bream and roach followed by Ross Wightman on the pole with 6-5-0. Third placed Steve Featherstone framed on the waggler and everyone had over 3lbs.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 11th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Free open invitation to a Pike Anglers Club teach-in on this Sunday, 16th September, 2012 at Grey Mist Mere 10am to 4pm. Come and see demonstrations by Eric Edwards on pike care and lure fishing and Mark Leathwood on fly fishing for these toothy predators. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Junior member Kyle Tilbury visited Grey Mist Mere on Saturday for his first carp session on the fishery. After carefully feeding his margin swim for a few hours with 15mm boilies his efforts were rewarded with a personal best mirror carp weighing in at 17lbs.

Dave Brooks put on an impressive performance of pole and waggler fishing in Sundays Mersey Series match. Using maggot he put an impressive net of mainly roach plus a few perch and dace on the scales for 15-7-15. Ros Wightman was runner up with 11-2-12 taken on pole and caster. There were lots of weights over 6lbs and only two anglers failed to weigh claiming they only had 5 or 6lbs. Up and coming young angler Adam Harman made the frame with mainly an all perch catch of 8-12-15.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the lower reaches alongside Weir Lane and saw George Hollis win with 5-4-0 taken on pole and maggot tactics followed in second place by our Chairman Chris Grehan with 4-12-4. I must give the fourth placed angler and match organiser John Dagnall a mention as he hasn't framed for some time. Using Dave Brooks winning rigs he set his stall out at 12 metres, carefully balling in at the start. On his first put-in his pole snapped and he fished the whole match on his top four sections!

Laurence Pearson reports him having a brilliant year on Rixton Claypits with the icing on the cake a personal best tench of 6lbs that he caught last week. Junior member Nathan Cartwright was likewise pleased with his PB bream of 4lbs caught from this popular fishery.

One of our member's quick actions on this venue alerted both our bailiffs and the Environment Agency to a group of Eastern European poachers who had set up rods and a barbeque on the opposite bank. His insistence and friendly advice that this group should leave forthwith achieved its objective and the EA and our bailiffs were stood down. I wish more members would treat club waters as their own which in reality they are.

5th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th September 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Well done to our Junior Match Squad who put in a great team performance to win the NJAA 55th Junior National Championship held last Saturday on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal with a total of 19 points. Runners up were the Northwich Anglers Association team with 23 and third on 27 was Sonubaits Suffolk County. Thanks to all concerned who helped.

The Mersey is hopefully hitting better form following the match on Sunday when three different methods secured the first three places. Winner Steve Featherstone on the quiver tip had 13-12-0 which included a couple of quality bream, whilst runner up Dave Brookes fished on the pole for an all roach/dace catch for 7-13-8, Roy Everson on the waggler put  a mixed net on the scales for 7-5-0 and third place.

Sport may have slowed on Grey Mist Mere but our stretch of the adjacent River Mersey is producing a few carp with fish in the twenties. Don't forget for insurance purposes both these fisheries are strictly members only.

If it is roach action you are after then look no further than Moore Quarry where following almost total annihilation by cormorants, it was so desperate that the birds stopped visiting the site. It has taken a fair few years but now it's back to past form, so fill your boots. A few carp and odd bream reported.

Advance notice and a free open invitation to a Pike Anglers Club teach-in on Sunday, 19th September, 2012 at Grey Mist Mere. Come and see demonstrations at Grey Mist Mere by Eric Edwards and Mark Leathwood. Further details on our website and notices are on display at local tackle shops. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Any new teams wishing to take part in Warrington Anglers Local Winter League please contact Craig Richie as soon as possible on 07972 039012 so he can set a date for a captains meeting.

28th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

28th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

This August Bank Holiday was certainly far from the best on record weather wise and this was reflected in the low number of anglers on the banks. I must admit that my Saturday was out for a start as I was glued to the TV and the rugby final, what a game and congratulations to the whole Warrington team who did our town proud.

Back to angling and following a dewatering of the River Mersey last week for essential engineering works our Sunday series match wasn't expected to produce a string of heavy weights and the turnout was predictably low. Anthony Higham used his extensive local knowledge to put a respectable 9-3-0 on the scales for a comfortable win.

Grey Mist Mere has been patchy with only a few anglers reporting the occasional carp. The carp stocks are there but simply not feeding, not so the roach that although ravaged by cormorant activity those remaining are producing some good sport. The committee are investigating several recent complaints of behavioural problems on this fishery that will not be tolerated. There is a fraternity on the Mist where everyone looks out for and helps each other, long may it continue.

There is a rumour circulating that a 'fifty' has been reported from Moore Quarry but I frankly have quite serious doubts, although I really do hope that I am made to eat my words. Photos and witnesses are the only proof of the pudding! Now if the story was concerning the large lake at Sandiway it would be more likely to be a possibility, perhaps in a few years anyway.

Cicily Mill Pool has been producing mixed bags of crucians, bream, plenty of roach, and a few tench and carp. High protein baits have seen members really score with crucians and tench coming on to a steady trickle of feed pellet with 6mm hookers. Carp fishing has been much slower.

Jim Wells reports that D pool at our Fosters mini-complex near Wigan was on form on Sunday when he fed maggot and fished double on the hook for a mixed catch of roach, chub, and carp, the latter to 10lbs. These small but compact fisheries are well worth a visit for within a few fields there are five pools to have a go at. A mile down the road there is our Woodshaw Reservoir that is similarly stuffed with fish. An item of tackle was left on D pool so if the owner would like to contact me I may have some good news.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
