27th September 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th September 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Alan Collier was absolutely buzzing following his capture of the Cicily Mill common on Saturday morning. This well known fish weighed in at 32-2-0 and took a homemade boilie only giving one bleep on the optonic which Alan thought was a tench just mouthing the bait. However as he tightened up all hell broke loose and he knew that he was into a good fish, and certainly not a tench! He has only recently returned to carp fishing and to date he has a PB mirror of 23-8-0 from Grey Mist and now the common to his credit, and all for forty quid a year, would you believe it!

The Ribble has really been on form over this past weekend with member Paul Floyd doing an overnighter arriving at the water at 8pm and fishing through until 10am. In that time he beat one PB with a chub of 4-3-0 and completely obliterated his bream PB of 6-7-0 with a superb fish of 12-1-0. Sport was hectic throughout and also included barbel to 6.5lbs and roach around the pound mark. He fished a 4oz running lead feeding PVA sticks of groundbait and micro-pellet and alternating between boilie or flavoured pop-up corn on the hook.

Another Ribble fan, Paul Edwards fished during Friday afternoon using open ended feeder tactics and stuffing it with pellets with a groundbait plug. He set up two rods and on one hair-rigged a meatball and the other a likewise mounted Source boilie. He had a few hours wait for his first bite that resulted in a nice barbel of 11-4-0. After this according to Paul the river went completely berserk with the result that as he was playing one barbel his other rod had a savage take and he ended up playing landing both fish!!!

I can hardly believe it two weekends on the trot and I have been out fishing, this time I tried my luck in the Mersey Championship match and at least had more fish including one of the bream that have suddenly started to feature in catches. But local ace, Ray Bowden gave a flawless demonstration of his pole mastery to have a runaway win with 10-2-0 of roach, dace, and perch. Second placed Jimmy Gannon included a bream and a large perch in his mixed net of 6-11-0 taken on feeder and maggot.

A few half decent perch showed up in our Monday regular Disabled & Over 60's event, match winner who also won the previous week (talk about handicapping) included one of 2lbs in his winning 5-5-5 catch. Third placed Alf Seddon also had a specimen of 2.5lbs.

There will be a small film crew on Sandiway this weekend shooting a promotional video, they have assured me that they will keep well clear and not disturb members fishing. Please try to give them every assistance.

Every fishing club in the North West should be alert for a determined team of active poachers; they are foreign, and according to a witness of European origin. They are using a van and have already been disturbed on one of our canal fisheries and also on a number of other clubs fisheries. These people must be caught so if you find a net, or set lines, please do not remove them but contact the Environment Agency and the police immediately, not forgetting me so I can provide some continuity. Obviously if you see a vehicle please note the number and type/colour but do not approach.

20th September 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th September 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

After a quiet spell the carp at Grey Mist are back on the scene with two catches reported on Saturday night, one  of five fish ranging from 9 to 17lbs along with tench to 6-8-0, and another of three carp. I was chatting to our supplier Viv Shears of VS Fisheries this week and it looks like we should have some interesting specimens on the way at year end as they have really packed on weight during the summer.

Dedicated pike angler Martin Taylor put aside his predator roads for the day on Friday and dusted off his trusty vintage Mitchell 300 which along with a 12ft waggler road and half a pint of maggots was his method of attack on his trip to Fosters Pools. He enjoyed his visit and had good sport with mainly roach and perch which kept him busy throughout the session.  It just goes to prove that you do not need the latest fancy tackle to enjoy the popular sport of angling.

I for once had a few hours to spare on Sunday and ended up on the Weaver at Frodsham Bridge, that is after I had battled my through dense reed growth to reach the river! I fished bolognaise method below the weir loose-feeding bronze maggots, it looked just perfect and fishy. Result zilch, and not so much as a sucked maggot. I have had a few reports of anglers catching roach, perch, and bream in the past, so would one of them please give me a ring? Incidentally our lock is now back in place on the gate but a word of warning the place is only for budding adventurers.

This week the Sunday Mersey series match was again won using the tip and groundbait feeder method, and once more large bream featured in the winning mixed bag of 14-13-2 taken by Andy Higham. Our annual members only Mersey Championship and last senior cup match of the year is being held this coming Sunday 25th September and I know that some of the regulars (experts) are away so here's your chance to snatch this prestigious trophy.

The Disabled & Over 60's match fished at Euclid Avenue saw weights drop due to the change in weather with local rod Jim Byrne needing only 3-5-8 to take the top spot. There was only an ounce separating each of the following weights.

13th September 2011 Warrinton Anglers Guardian Notes

13th September 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Mersey Series on Sunday saw those members who stuck to pole tactics literally battered by bream as the first three anglers included large specimens of feeder caught fish. So I expect at this point I should eat my words for as I reported in last week's column 'they never show up in matches'.  Furthermore the winner, Roy Everson set up a new Mersey match record with 26-7-14 that included specimens of 8-3-0 and 7-3-0 which along with a brace of 4pounders and a few roach made up his winning catch. He fished caster and Red Lake and fishmeal groundbait in a large swim feeder. Please note temporary change of draw venue to Mersey Walk due to Warrington half marathon.

Again a 'b' word but now barbel as targeted on our River Wye stretch by Les Capper and his mate Mike Brooks. On the first day Les had what he thought was a cracking day catching a personal best chub of 4-15-0 along with nine barbel to 7-11-0. The following day he slid his net under a 12-7-0 barbel and another personal best followed by another nineteen of the beauties. Mike also got amongst the barbel plus a few chub but couldn't match his mates catch rate; definitely Les had the boss swim.

Stan Deakin fished on the Bridgewater Canal opposite Moore Post office where not so many years ago you would struggle to get on this hot peg but on this occasion not another angler in sight in either direction. Their loss though as veteran angler Stan proceeded to empty his peg of quality roach perch and several big bream. According to some there's no roach in this canal, well how's 10lbs plus not counting the perch and bream all taken on the pole at 11metres and white maggot.

The Disabled & Over 60's match was moved due to weather conditions this past two weeks to the dead length where committee member Graham Belton who won the previous weeks event with 6-6-6 put another winning net of 4-7-8 on the scales for the double. Barry Owen wasn't too far behind with 4-2-12.

Rumours are rife regarding a couple of recent thirties from our 53 acre lake at Sandiway and several twenties from the adjacent but smaller17.5 acre one. Any pictures would help us to establish growth rates that would help with future stockings.

6th September 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

6th September 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Although I have never caught a large Mersey bream there are a number of members who reckon to have caught double figure specimens although they never show up in matches. This week's Mersey series was no exception, however the winner, Carl Gul did have a half decent sized one of 7-4-2 which took a liking to his feeder fished halibut pellet. He added just three small roach to his 7-8-3 total net, over a 1lb clear of second placed Ray Bowden who stuck with his trusted pole method to take a mixed bag for 6-4-0.

Pete Gamble and his son Damon snatched an hour's fishing on Grey Mist Mere on Sunday evening only setting up one rod between them. They only had one bite at 8pm on the dot and Pete was lucky to get to the rod first before Damon as the fish set off on a screaming run after taking a hair-rigged 16mm halibut pellet. There were a few tense moments when it became snagged in lily pads but after a ten minute battle a cracking tench of 9-1-0 and a personal best, lay safely in the landing net. A member who witnessed the capture had himself caught two carp, the best a 19lbs mirror.

Angling is an unbelievably inclusive sport in which all the family can take either an active or passive part. Such was the case for the Smiths from Wigan fishing at Worthington Lakes last week when father, Kyle caught his first carp, a common of 12lbs exactly watched by his excited wife and four year old daughter. Kyle sent me some photos, one with his wife holding the fish, judging by the smiles all around I guarantee that both wife and daughter will be fishing before too long.

The Grey Mist Mere clean-up on Sunday was well attended (not) as the only two volunteers to show up were bailiff Steve Kemble and yours truly. On our way round the fishery one of our junior members Jordan Ogden stopped fishing and joined us trimming back bushes and removing rubbish from both ours and adjacent land. It was obvious that it was not all attributable to anglers but nevertheless totally unacceptable. We have now decided to invest in covert cameras which we can site around our fisheries if and when a problem arises.
