28th June 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Saturday 25th June saw the first official match to be held at Ackers Pit since the re-opening of the water in 2009.

The annual Howleston Cup junior match switched venue from the traditional Grey Mist mere, and attracted 14 young Warrington Anglers members. Everyone caught fish during the 3 hour match, and a variety of species were caught including roach, rudd, perch, tench, mirror carp and crucian carp.

The match winner was Ryan Brown, who included all the above species in a mixed bag for 3290g, switching between waggler and pole-fished maggots.

So whilst the Bridgewater matches produced some rather grim results last week it is right back on form now and has been fishing its head off with decent catches of bream still reported. Winner of the Disabled and over 60's match on Monday Alf Seddon had a very nice net of small roach and skimmers all on caster which almost doubled the next anglers very respectable catch of 8lb.

Woodshaw and Forsters pools and Worthington lakes are all still providing good sport our local team have been carrying out some weed clearance and various waterside conservation tasks on areas of Mowpin to make more pegs usable. Woodshaw as usual is well worth a visit even for a couple of hours after work as Monday's short Junior match catches proved.

A member reported tar oozing from the side of one of the new pegs at Grey mist  mere and the team there have investigated it would appear that one of the old barrels which were buried on the site in the forties has surface during recent work and the hot weather has caused some of the tar to seep out. The situation will be rectified soon by our volunteers. Bailiff Keith Hayes has been keeping an eye on the resident carp and reports that there is a large group of forty or more shoaled up in one area and clearly visible as he could identify several by name! So I am guessing that the carp sport won't be great at the moment as they clearly have more important things to do.

The Race night held last Friday at Thelwall Legion raised £2075 and Sundays Open match another £205 towards the Ladies England Team going to Italy for the World Championships. Helen Dagnall has asked me to thank everyone who has contributed in any way for their continued and generous support.  As each competitor has to raise £2000 in order to take part it is a big help. There are still Raffle tickets on sale if anyone else would like support them further.

Best of Luck to our Cadet, Junior and Intermediate teams when they take part in the Angling Trust national Championships at Heron brook and Baden Hall this Saturday.

21st June 2011 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

21st June 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Congratulations to our WAA Blue team who have just qualified for the Van Den Eynde Supercup Final with 37 points. Managed by Jeff Stoll the team put in a good performance at Woodlands View on Saturday to get through in their first year in this competition. Jake Fowles section win just gave the team the edge on the day. The final is on the 10th July at Tunnel Barn Fishery.

A decent sized eel has been reported this week from the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall by member Tony Halagan. The fish was 5lbs and is one of a number of notable catches from this fishery. I can never understand why Anguilla Club members don't give this water more attention, especially as a fish of over 9lbs was found dead a few years ago.

Following my report last week that Grey Mist was only producing a few small roach and perch Chris Taylor shot me down in flames by reporting a few days later that in a four hour session he had over 50 fish all on double white maggot. Nothing too big but the float kept going under.

The Tom James Open Match fished on the River Mersey was definitely a lot harder than the Open Day Special on the 16th where over 9lbs was needed to make a serious challenge for the money. Ros Whiteman took top honours from end peg 34 with small roach, perch, and dace for 4-10-0.

So whilst the Bridgewater matches produced some rather grim results it was better news from our junior series at Woodshaw Reservoir where the (7 – 14 years) age group was won with 7-9-0 of roach by Kieran Garside, Shaun Gaskell confirmed his mastery of this prolific fishery by another win in the 15 to 18 category with 8-12-0.

It is with great sadness that I report the sudden death in reported tragic circumstances of member Harry Morris whilst out fishing last week. Our condolences and sympathy go out to his family at their time of grief.

14th June 2011 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

14th June 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our 'catch of the month' competition for May was won by Harry Minshull with a tench from Moore Quarry which was one of a brace of specimens weighing 9-3-0 and 10lbs exactly. Harry wins £100 of Bait-Tech products plus a Korda carp care kit. A consolation prize of a carp care kit goes to Chris Pownell for a 21-8-0 common carp from Cicily Mill Pool.

After a frustrating ninety day coarse fish close season on our rivers its business as usual as they re-open on Thursday 16th June. Warrington stretches of the River Mersey have been the subject of some serious TLC by our regular working party volunteers who have been frantically clearing, and repairing pegs in readiness. Dave Brooks is also holding a working party on Saturday, all welcome, meet Weir Lane adjacent to Victoria Park at 9-30am, bring small hand tools, hammer spade etc.

At Worthington Lakes, Adlington the smaller fishery on the three lake complex also re-opens on 16th June and is home to the larger carp with fish rumoured to be approaching the high thirties, some keen members are already booked on in anticipation after the long layoff. Meanwhile Arley, the middle lake, continues to give reasonable sport judging by member George Wilson's mixed catch of  bream and roach which he estimated at over 50lbs with bream to 3.5lbs all taken on a small groundbait feeder and double red maggot.

At Grey Mist Mere the odd carp are keeping sport alive however tench are somewhat scarce and maggots are only producing a few small roach and perch. It can only improve but on the plus side the fishery looks a million dollars with the new pegs and pathways thanks to our local management team. There is still more to complete so if you fancy getting involved give me a ring or an email and I will pass your details on. I noticed a small amount of litter on my visit on Tuesday; you know the rules, take it home or lose your licence.

The Sankey St Helens Canal at Carterhouse is giving good sport with bream and rudd, Dave Shaw reports a phenomenal catch of 18 rudd for 32lbs from this underused fishery. With reasonable parking available it is definitely worth a visit.

7th June 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

7th June 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The 'Think Big' O2 charity event held at Ackers Pit on Sunday was a major success thanks to both our work party volunteers who cleared and repaired pegs and our coaches who were kept busy on the day. All the children taking part, some being first time anglers, caught a variety of species including carp, tench, roach, rudd, perch, and a few skimmers. Who said the fish were hard to catch at this venue?

Our bailiffs at Phoenix Park Lake report that the lake is currently producing some good sport, with lots of roach showing to over the pound mark to maggot and quality tench to 6lb 8oz. on sweet corn. The bream have spawned and are now spread throughout the lake but starting to get down to some serious feeding.  The large carp are currently spawning but small carp have been showing that must have bred here so that is good news for the future.

There is not too long to go now until the 16th June when our river fisheries open their doors once again to coarse fishing. Some good news is that I have successfully applied for a 'maggot dispensation' order for our River Wye fishery at Hay on Wye. Maggots are normally banned on this river until September, so enjoy the opening day, although like myself I am certain that most of you were blissfully unaware of this restriction.

Fosters Pools are really on form according to regular Brian Lewis who fished both the Carp Pool and 'D' last weekend. On the first he had a fish every cast on 4mm pellet, mainly crucians, rudd, and roach, but included eight carp, best about 6lbs. The carp on our 'D' pool were similarly in a feeding mood where after catching quality roach using the same pole and pellet tactics he switched to running line when the big fish started swirling and landed four carp, the best a common of 16-12-0 fell to paste.

On the match scene the John Leigh Trophy held at Preston Brook was won by Tom Oliver with a net of tiny silver fish for 3-9-0. Runner up Ryan Brown included a tench of 2.5lbs in his 3-5-0 catch.
