31st May 2011 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

31st May 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Paul Floyd is a dedicated barbel angler and only joined Warrington Anglers in March this year to target our extensive river fisheries. However during the enforced ninety close season on these venues he decided in the meanwhile to try some of our stillwaters until he could get back to his favourite quarry. Of the five venues so far visited he has enjoyed good sport at each, had personal bests of roach and tench. On his latest visit to Grey Mist Mere he reports that eels are very definitely on the feed having had at least a dozen during the night ranging in size from 1/2 lb to 3 lbs. However a screaming run at 11-30pm resulted in one of the 'new mirrors' at 15lb 12oz followed by a tench of 5.5lbs.

One of the reasons why your reports are so invaluable is that they help follow members to make an informed choice of venue so making better use of their time available for fishing our waters. Tom Williams for example read Alex Egan's report on Wide Hole reported in my column last week so instead of starting his visit from scratch he was ahead of the game and using Alex's method, corn and waggler, was soon into the bream. Tom had a red letter day with nineteen fish to 2.5lbs.

There is more mystery attached to catches from the large lake at Sandiway than speculation on the whereabouts of Colonel Gadaffi  or who said what to whom at FIFA. So with my ear to the ground I have heard scraps of gossip regarding a few sizeable fish of late, no proof, just gossip; although I would dearly love anglers in a members club such as ours to treat it as such and not their own preserve or syndicate fishery. So here goes, a thirty four, thirty eight, and a forty. Any chance of a picture or two to show our members?  If you don't ask you don't get.

If any youngsters fancy having a go at fishing then our weekly Minnows Summer Series of coached events for beginners and improvers is just the ticket.  They are held every Tuesday draw 6pm on the Bridgewater Canal opposite Euclid Avenue. Our qualified coaches will be on hand to help and both members and non-members are more than welcome.

Please send me your catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for 2011 subscriptions, new memberships, and any queries.

24th May 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

24th May 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Recent new member James Gould caught a new personal best tench of 8lbs from Grey Mist Mere last weekend during a short morning session. He had three others, two of them just marginally under 6lbs and lost what he thought was an enormous eel.

Someone told me a gem a few weeks ago that large eels only feed once every two years, well if that is fact the capture of the 10 pounder in April was akin to a lottery win, furthermore the place must be literally crawling with them as quality eels are caught regularly from this fishery.

Alex Egan had a good bream session at our Wide Hole fishery at Poynton catching twenty three fish averaging around 2.5lbs apiece and a surprise carp of 16-2-0 which gave him one hell of a fight and broke his landing net in the bargain. The fish are obviously shoaling up ready for spawning as he hardly needed to feed and only used a small bag of sweetcorn during his early morning session. Successful method was waggler with a size 12's hook loaded with two grains of the 'Giant' corn variety.

One of our members who wishes to remain anonymous has been going to Moore Quarry after most of the weekend overnighter anglers have left and having some cracking 'dog roach' catches. He has been pole fishing the margin at the bottom of the shelf with either maggot or corn. Certainly good news as the cormorants in past years ravaged the once prolific resident roach population.

Reports from or Wigan fisheries bailiff team that Woodshaw Reservoir is really producing some outstanding catches with crucians and tench being caught in good numbers on either pellet or paste. However suddenly bream averaging 4.5 to 5lbs have come into the frame, but what puzzles me is on such a pocket sized fishery where do they vanish to for the rest of the year?

If any youngsters fancy having a go at fishing then our weekly Minnows Summer Series of coached events for beginners and improvers is where you want to start.  They are held every Tuesday draw 6pm on the Bridgewater Canal opposite Euclid Avenue. Our qualified coaches will be on hand to help and both members and non-members are more than welcome.

Both of our Monday events, the Disabled & Over 60's and Junior/Intermediate matches are cancelled due to the Bank Holiday but resume the following week on the 6th June. The junior event is the John Leigh Trophy Cup Match drawn 6pm under the motorway bridge at Preston Brook (pegs 1-30).

If you are fancying a session on the Bridgewater Canal on Sunday it would be wise to avoid from London Bridge to Walton Gardens as Warrington Disability Partnership are holding a fundraising kayak challenge event along this length from 10am until 4pm.

A minority of so called members have started recently leaving litter on both Sandiway Lakes and Grey Mist Mere. If those responsible are reading this quite simply either immediately change your ways or we do not want you as members.

17th May 2011 Warrington Gurdian Notes

17th May 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Following on from last week's phenomenal tench catch Moore Quarry is again in the news with the capture of a massive carp that weighed in at 34-10-0. I have not yet spoken to the angler at the time of going to press but I understand the fish was weighed and witnessed by one of our local depots on Friday morning. Hopefully the angler will contact me in due course because catch detail and a picture would be more than welcome for our archive.

New member Carl Johnson on only his second visit to one of our fisheries was more than pleased with his 21-8-0 mirror carp and eight tench ranging from 6lbs to 8.5lbs. Grey Mist was the magic venue where his monster crab boilies were obviously in great demand as at one time the baits were taken on both rods simultaneously, putting Carl under just a little pressure to successfully land both fish within seconds of each other.

Chris Pownall reports catching a PB 21-8-0 common from Cicily Mill Pool on Sunday on a chod rig using Nash boilies. He also had five tench to 4lbs on method feeder before switching to his carp gear when the fish showed some signs of activity.

Grey Mist Mere is really up there with the best for tench fishing, in fact when the Environment Agency carried out test netting last year they were amazed at the quality and numbers of this popular species. Biggest I have heard of this past week was 9-4-0 whilst Ian Edwards had a catch of sixteen fish on dead maggot using a balanced rig. James Gould sent me some real quality pics of his fish from both the Mist and the small lake at Sandiway. The fish from the latter were several shades lighter and really pretty fish.

On the match scene Barry Owen made it his second successive win with a cracking 9-8-0 net of roach taken on bread and caster. Pegged at Moore he doubled the weights of the other three anglers in the frame.

It was petticoat power that led the way in our weekly junior event with Emma Bellis absolutely battering any opposition with a net of 7-13-12 of skimmers and roach. Adam Harman came in second with 2-14-11. Only 3 drams separated the intermediates with Luke Bowden taking the top spot with 3-15-5.

Our Minnows Summer Series of coached events for beginners and improvers start on Tuesday 24th May draw 6pm Euclid Avenue. Our qualified coaches will be on hand to help and both members and non-members are more than welcome.

10th May 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our April BaitTech/Korda 'fish of the month' senior prize was won by Gary Bristow with a really stunning looking linear weighing in at 23lbs from Sandiway 'Small' Lake. This fish was stocked in October 2010 and despite overwintering in the worst conditions for many years has gained 1lb. The junior prize was won by 14 year old Andrew Lamb with the famous Cicily Mill common that weighed in at 30-4-0.

A cracking brace of tench has been reported from Moore Quarry by Harry Minshull who had fish of 10lbs and 9-3-0. Sadly new member Bernard Healey visiting the water for the first time blanked, but as a consolation Harry allowed him to be photographed holding his ten pounder. A few carp showing, best reported a 24lbs fish taken on Friday.

Brian Callands enjoyed some good bream sport on Woodshaw Reservoir with fish to 5-8-0 taken on quiver tipped 4mm pellet. Our bailiff reports another angler catching thirty seven crucians on pole fished paste. John Sweeney struck into a good fish which had his elastic at full stretch on numerous occasions during the fight. Visions of a massive crucian or tench were dashed by the eventual appearance in his landing net of a 10lbs pike which had taken his single grain of corn.

The carp are definitely starting to feed at Grey Mist Mere and a reasonable number of both older and recent stocked fish have been caught. Tench are still suicidal with fish to 9lbs featuring in catches.

Our Junior Summer Series got off to a good start on Monday with Tom Oliver getting maximum points with skimmer and roach catch of 3-4-0 taken on pole fished pinkie and maggot. Jack Bellis won the intermediate event with 3-10-0.

Our Minnows Summer Series of coached events for beginners and improvers start in two weeks time on Tuesday 24th May draw 6pm Euclid Avenue. As usual our qualified coaches will be on hand to help and both members and non-members are more than welcome.

Many thanks to the PAC members who staged a successful pike teach-in event at Grey Mist Mere on Sunday. Twenty-seven anglers attended and benefitted from the expert tuition and wealth of knowledge on hand. A pike was even caught right on cue in order to demonstrate unhooking techniques! The sheer variety of lure fishing also attracted a lot of interest. Another is planned on the Bridgewater Canal at the end of the year so watch this space.

3rd May 2011 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

3rd May 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

New member Jack Emery was ecstatic when I spoke to him on Friday, having only joined that morning he headed straight to Cicily Mill Pool. Literally before the ink on his membership card was dry he had landed a 20-8-0 common.  Along with 'old' member Paul Whiteman who also had a brace of smaller carp, they also caught tench and bream steadily all day using mini-boilies.

Gordon Ashton called into our HQ to collect his BaitTech/Korda 'fish of the month' prize for his 13-8-0 barbel from the River Dee caught in the last weeks of the season. He was over the moon with his bags of goodies worth over £100 which will come in handy as he has turned his attention to Grey Mist Mere during the river coarse fish close season. Gordon has been regularly catching quality tench each session on combinations of maggot and pellet. His best session this past week amounted to eighteen tincas to 6lbs plus.

Last week saw our volunteers release thousands of roach into The Mount Fishery at Buckley to improve sport on this water. We have further stockings lined up from various sources which have been put on the back burner due to a combination of the 'early summer' and believe it or not an aggressive swan. Local rod Daz Jones reports that the increased competition from the new fish has stirred up the resident stock and anglers are reporting good catches of roach and perch plus a few tench.

Have you ever fancied a crack at pike fishing but are put-off because you feel it's too complicated, or perhaps those sharp teeth make you think twice. Well here is the answer to your prayers, get down to Grey Mist Mere on Sunday 8th May between 10am and 2pm for our popular Pike Anglers Club teach-in event. Come and meet the professionals, see how it's done with live demonstrations and have a go yourself. There is no charge and it is open to non-members.

Spring League match organiser, Craig Richie tried a new venue between bridges 80 and 81 on our stretch of the Macclesfield Canal. This has not been used for contests in the fifteen years or so since we have leased the fishery so it was a brave move. As it turned out this coincided with high winds which did not help, however Phil Matthews put 6-3-0 on the scales to take the money and maximum points. Jeff Shaw, runner-up and current series points leader was over 2lbs adrift on 3-11-11.
