22nd Feb 2011. WAA weekly report

Ian Birchall fished a few sessions on the Ribble during the summer without a great deal of success so left it alone until after Christmas when sport just got better with each visit. Even last weekend with the river in flood he managed chub between 4 and 5lbs alternating between a block-end maggot feeder and meat with free offerings introduced via a PVA bag.
Similarly Kevin McArda found a fishable slack on the inside of a bend at our River Dane fishery at Holmes Chapel. Fishing maggot he winkled out two good chub around 4lbs apiece when most others struggled for a bite.
Our dedicated working party volunteers were out in force at Grey Mist Mere last Saturday and with a coordinated effort completed four new pegs. It doesn't sound much but these are the 'absolute dogs'.  As for the fishing, tench are more active, however a few of the carp stocked last year have been showing. From photo evidence I saw last weekend they look in excellent condition and more importantly are putting on weight.
If you want some hot pike action the Mersey is currently showing the best form despite the weeks highest tides travelling as far upstream as the Woolston Weir. It certainly has not put the fish off feeding with Bernard Anderson reporting fish to 15lbs on ledgered sprat. Grey Mist is producing a good number of small pike which is ideal for those who would like to try their luck at these toothy predators. Don't forget the essential tools are an unhooking mat, stout glove, forceps, and barbless hooks.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8.30pm on Friday, for 2011 night permits and new memberships. The latter can still also be purchased from Baileys Tackle, Cheshire Angling, and Challinors Sports in Warrington or at our other depots as listed on our website, or online at www.warrington-anglers.org.uk.

15th Feb 2011. WAA Weekly report.

The word that Ackers Pit is throwing up some decent catches is out with a good number of our junior members bagging up on carp and roach. Martin Egan on Sunday converted five of his seven bites into hard fighting mirror carp and my visit on Monday afternoon ended with a seven out of eight score. Neither of us had any silver fish but there were plenty topping towards the end of the short session as the light faded.
Warrington Anglers Local Winter League fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Broken Cross last weekend saw a drop in weights but Neil Buist (Cheshire Angling) had a comfortable win with 7-12-0 of roach taken on bread and caster. Less than an ounce separated the next three results with second placed Gary Mannion just ahead on 3-13-14. With three matches to go Warrington Red team have taken the lead with 108 points.
Dave Blears was the only angler who caught over the lb mark to win Mondays Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal with 1-7-0 followed by John Sharp on 15-2.
At Rixton Claypits anglers on night sessions are catching tench plus the occasional bream but no carp have been reported. Work will be starting shortly on the pathways and pegs where volunteers will be more than welcome as everything needs to be hand-balled from the car park down to the water's edge. Please let me know if you are interested.
The result of not locking our security barriers is currently there for all members to see on our car park at Moore Quarry in the shape of the disgusting mess left behind from a burnt out car. Thankfully the body was removed. There is no place in Warrington Anglers for such selfish so called anglers who by their actions expose a fishery and decent members to such threats.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

8th Feb 2011. WAA Weekly Report

Our Spring League match result fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal on Sunday saw match organiser Craig Richie take a comfortable win with 2.5lbs to spare. In windy conditions when most struggled holding any length of pole he opted for a waggler and caster approach for an all roach catch of 11-7-0. Second placed John Cartwright stuck it out on the pole for 8-14-0 which included a cracking perch of 2.5lbs. Nineteen fished with eleven weights over 5lbs.
Dogged by bad weather and a frozen canal match organiser John Dagnall finally got his 'Christmas Prize Match' out of the way on Monday and it was almost a full turnout with twenty eight anglers fishing. Ray Bowden put a mixed net of 4-11-0 on the scales to take the prize money and some late Xmas goodies. Match regular Lennie Dutton was runner-up with 3-15-0. Nice to see Graham Belton back in action after an enforced layoff due to ill health, and showing he has not lost his touch coming in fifth place.
It's rewarding when a plan comes together; I am talking about Ackers Pit where anglers are drifting back, no doubt encouraged by rumours of some action on this underused and once ever so popular fishery. Well I am pleased to say that in this instance the rumour mongers have got it right for once, the recently stocked carp are feeding so get down there for some action. Reports please.
Our memberships will be going out in the next couple of weeks so if anyone has moved address please get in touch to ensure that you receive your card. We have had no cause to increase prices which have been held steady since the present financial debacle.
At Grey Mist Mere there is more work being carried out to improve pegs and pathways than actual catch action although I understand a few of last year's new fish are being landed. Reports please so that we can continue monitoring growth and progress etc. Not a nice subject, but some disgusting member left the fishery toilet in a filthy state so what his home is like I shudder to think. It was really embarrassing for our club because it was a lady volunteer doing work for WAA who could not use it.

1st February 2011. WAA Weekly Report

Mentioned in last week's column the stocking of carp to help control the weed on Ackers Pit went without a hitch on Friday morning with the introduction of 600lbs of cormorant proof fish to 3.5lbs. They should grow well and soon be competing for the various breads and feed meant for the massive duck population. Meanwhile the marginal planting is ongoing and currently volunteers are on site every Sunday. The objective here is to strengthen the banks, provide valuable habitat, and also improve this popular place aesthetically.
Warrington Anglers Local League was fished last weekend on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green and saw Ross Wightman (Cheshire Angling) take a well deserved individual win with 7-9-1 of roach. Bob Clough (Warrington Red) was runner-up with 6-12-5. Top team on the day was Assi with 17points.
The Disabled & Over 60's prize match was cancelled on Monday due to the majority of pegs being frozen, however it is re-scheduled for Monday, weather permitting. As usual there were a few diehards who finding an ice-free area ran a match which was won by Steve Critchley with a net of small skimmer bream for 3-12-10 with over a pound to spare over second placed Jeff Clare on 2-5-8.
There is no change on the River Mersey where sport is terrible but a few grayling and trout are reported from the Dane at Holmes Chapel.
Work continues on Sunday at both Grey Mist Mere (pegs and pathways) and at Ackers Pit (habitat improvement). If you fancy helping at either please give me a ring or drop me an email.
