28th September 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian

Good news this week on the Grey Mist situation from CEFAS is that thankfully the carp deaths are not due to the dreaded Koi Herpes Virus. However in the interests of fish welfare and as a precaution the fishery remains closed with the situation being closely monitored and the awaited outcome of further tests.

Paul Edwards had a red letter day on Friday at our Association owned stretch of the Ribble . Whilst setting up his second rod the action started when the first buckled under a heavy take but he lost what looked to be a decent chub at the net. With both rods in operation, one on halibut pellet and the other on meatball he was soon into fish and ended his session with three chub, best 5-7-0 and three barbel the best being a magnificent 13-4-0 specimen. The only downside was he forgot his camera.

More barbel action on our stretch at Hay on Wye with member Ken Foxcroft and his three mates all getting into fish after taking valuable advice from our local bailiff Alan Jones which according to Ken made the difference of zero to hero. To date I have no weights but judging from the photographs there are some real specimens.

The Mersey Championship last Sunday fished well in the conditions with local rod Martin Lenihan taking top honours with 8-6-8 and a pound clear of runner up Paul Harding on 7-5-0.

It gives me a kick when any member who having known this river as a previously open sewer finally succumbs and casts a line into the once murky waters, so welcome Rob Kenyon to the 'Mersey converts club'.  Rob finally overcame his reticence on Thursday catching bream, roach, and perch. It is now firmly on his list of regular venues.

Please continue sending in your catch reports as they are valuable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

Over the last week the grim possibility that Grey Mist mere has been infected by the Koi Herpes Virus has sadly come to light. We have lost some of the older carp over the last twelve months period which has been put down to natural causes owing to the advanced age of those fish and no visible signs of disease.  Unfortunately a specimen found by our bailiffs last week floundering in the margins did display all the classic signs of having KHV. The EA responded quickly to our bailiffs' call by removing the sick fish for testing, alerting CEFAS, and arranging to net the water next day in order to obtain further live specimens of carp to send for analysis at the CEFAS laboratories in Brampton. Thank you to all involved. As a precautionary measure Grey Mist is closed until further notice and the water will be monitored by the bailiffs and the EA.

Test results should be with back within the next seven days and the best on going courses of action to safeguard our fish stocks will be considered. As always fish welfare is paramount and we would ask all anglers to follow EA advice to wash and air dry all nets, slings, unhooking mats etc between fisheries. Wet nets kept in `stink' bags is one of the best ways to transmit disease apart from illegally introducing fish into a fishery.  Please note there are outbreaks at other fisheries country wide and an up to date list is available on the CEFAS website please be extra vigilant.

On a happier note Dave Statter had an excellent day on Cicely mill pool with good sport all day, quality tench, bream, crucians and roach all responded to his pellet tipped with hair rigged plastic corn bait. He said conditions were perfect and to top off the day he had common carp of 5lb, 13lb 2, 15lb 6 and as he was packing up the big common took his bait at first pretending to be a bream then powering off to give Dave a proper fight and weighing in at 30lb2oz .

Ron Williams reported some good chub being caught on the Dane last week end he had five between 4 and 5lb himself.

Antony Jolley has asked that all members visiting the Ribble take extra care on the paths and boardwalks along the river one of the bridges is also broken, also the path down from Dewhurst Farm to our downstream limit which is part of the Ribble Way the rangers have been alerted to the poor condition of the route.

14th September 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian

Two of our members Helen Dagnall and Wendy Locker both from the North West have been selected to represent England again this year in the Women's World championships in South Africa at the end of October.

Although the Angling Trust Ladies England team has secured some sponsorship for the team to take part in the event all the team members still have to each pay £1000 themselves in order to go. Helen and Wendy have organised two events to help them raise the necessary funds but time is short so hopefully with help and support from as many of us as possible they will manage it.

The first is an OPEN match on the River Mersey here at Warrington on Sunday 18th September price £12 all in the pegs are being donated by WAA (see details below).

The other for the less energetic amongst us is a Race Night on Friday 8th October to be held at Grappenhall Ex Servicemen's Club, Grappenhall tickets £6 including a Hot Pot supper. If you can support either event please do as we want them to bring another team medal back for England. For further information please ring Helen on 01925 635486.

Please note there will be no access to Grey Mist mere which will be closed from 8pm Wednesday until 5pm Thursday 16th while some important work is undertaken, members will need to use alternative venues just for the day.

WAA have been contacted by Manchester Ship Canal Company this week with a request to pass on to anglers in the area the following information regarding people fishing from Woolston Deposit Grounds and Guard Weir.

They point out that the fishing rights there belong to MSCC and fishing is not allowed from their bank and that they have the right to prosecute anyone found trespassing on their land and will be forced to do so if the problem continues.

Can all minnows, juniors and inters make sure that you get your forms back to us this week so we can complete the arrangements for the special match and presentation on 9th October. Please return them to Cheshire Angling or HQ.

7th September 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian

The Dee again grabs the news as confirmed reports have reached me of another 11lbs barbel caught from one of our stretches. Simon Loyley of Tackle Locker had his first barbel experience ensnaring two of the creatures from our Almere Fishery where I understand lots of small fish around a pound are also showing. Roach and dace sport is also exceptional. Nick Donald took a fresh run salmon of 14lbs after five frustratingly threw the hook, several almost at the net.

A member asked me yesterday about rumours he had heard of  new fish for Grey Mist Mere to replace some of the ancient stock that are now sadly suffering age casualties. It would appear the rumour machinery is at full tilt so to set the record straight it's no secret that we have fish on order for the end of the year. They are the same strain as last year however any introduction is always subject to S30 permission being granted nearer the time.

Our Sunday Mersey Series saw Lennie Dutton put a mixed net of 12-0-0 on the scales to pip Ray Bowden by just 3ounces for a win. Ros Wrightman was third with 8-6-0.  Versatile or some say lucky Lennie followed this the next day at our weekly Disabled & Over 60's canal match at Hilltop by taking top honours with a roach and skimmer net of 5-1-7 taken on pole alternating caster and maggot. Third placed Billy Pickles showed his mastery of the rod by catching his 4-1-0 on waggler and pinkie.

Our website is now fully functional after its recent difficulties including the member's forum. The re-vamped site should make alterations/improvements much easier in the future.

This week we have banned a member for leaving litter after he showed complete disregard for our rules.  Litter is something that all decent anglers hate with a vengeance and we all have a collective responsibility to help stamp it out.

31st August 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian

This morning a member rang from the river Dee at Caldecott Hall where the calm was shattered by a power boat ploughing through at speed with no regard for him or the wildlife along the river. The Dee is navigable as far a Shocklach however the upper areas of the river come under the auspices of Chester Council who were very quick to reply to the information passed on by the EA regarding the incident.

The upshot is that any member experiencing similar problems from inconsiderate boaters should note the type and style of boat i.e. outboard motor or inboard, colour and name of boat and any other identifying features and report to either Chester city council or me and I will pass the information on.

Sandiway small lake has been fishing well with decent tench catches reported as well as several carp to 20lb. There has been some work carried out this past week to complete the high bank at the old ski-slope. Also a new access gate has erected on the lane at the start of the centre track which must be kept locked at all times.

Mark, Barry and Luke Chambers were enjoying a nice days fishing on Grey Mist until it was spoiled by a disturbing catch. Luke was practising his feeder fishing while Mark an experienced carp angler waited for a run after a couple of strange indications he decided to reel in and recast when it  became apparent that there was something attached to his line.

It turned out to be a large quantity of someone else's line with a 'death rig' end tackle to which a decent carp still attached. Fortunately Barry and Mark were able to hand line the fish in and were able to treat the damage to its mouth weigh it and nurse it in the margins until it recovered sufficiently and swam off after its ordeal.

On a much happier note water bailiff   Keith Hayes was very impressed by a young member Chris Moulton who fished next to him last Wednesday and witnessed the youngster hook and land  his first ever Grey Mist carp. When he went to assist him Chris's legs were shaking but he played the fish perfectly and more importantly, handled it with total care. The fish was one of the older fish and weighed 15 ½ lbs. He then went on to catch another fish of 14 lbs again one of the old ones. To cap it all he then came to our bailiffs swim and told him where he should be casting!!... Brilliant!

Chris well done there is a Korda fish care kit with your name on it waiting for you to pick up at HQ
