24th August  2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The River Mersey is currently on top form with 142lbs being the total catch taken between 24 anglers in our Sunday match series. Top honours went to Mersey regular Gary Manion with a mixed net of bream, roach, perch, and dace for 11-9-0. Neil Buist was runner-up with another mixed bag which included some cracking perch for 9-12-4.

Our local fishery team report that WAA Wigan waters are providing good mixed pleasure catches. Mowpin and the Carp Pool regulars are having good sport with crucians, rudd, tench, chub, and carp to 6lbs; whilst at Woodshaw Reservoir quality crucians and tench are feeding well on either pellet or paste. Worthington Lakes are providing steady sport with roach and bream to feeder or pole tactics but the carp are not feeding as well as usual.

Ian Simpson had a good pole catch of small tench, rudd, bream, and three carp with the best at 12-4-0 from High Legh Pools. Ian reckons that he had well over 35lbs of fish and he lost two carp at the net on his light tackle. He alternated between home-made paste and maggot.

Last Saturday saw our senior team competing on the River Trent in the Division 1National Championships.  Their 28th final position saw them come in the top third beating many good teams. Our best individual result was by Martin Griffiths who came second in B section with 8100. In total 10 teams were relegated.

17th August  2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I can only begin this week by saying a sincere `Congratulations' and very well done to local angler and WAA member Bernard Anderson on his recent record breaking mega catch which will shortly be reported on in detail in all the major angling publications.

On a trip to Church Lake in Essex Bernard decided to do some good old fashioned stalking using a rod, centre pin reel and lob worm after spotting some decent carp cruising around.

He tempted what turned out to be the biggest carp to take his bait and was eventually the proud captor of a beautiful verified 61lb 6oz British mirror carp.

The catch is particularly important as the former British record carp  a fish called Two Tone which as reported on today's ITN Lunchtime News has died and will be buried at the weekend.

Bernard's catch is therefore all the more important as his 61lb 6oz mirror carp could be the new British record and certainly I am told that he has broken several records with his achievement.  It is the biggest recorded stalked fish capture, biggest caught on a centre pin reel, biggest on lob worm and is also an Essex record as well as making Bernard the youngest angler to catch a British carp over 60lb.

The whole process was filmed and photographed by the Nash TV company who were on the lake at the time and able to record events for posterity some of the footage and pictures will soon be on view at Baileys tackle shop at Woolston.

In contrast the news from around our fisheries this week has been pretty scant  reports of a few nice tench and carp to 17lb from Rixton Clay pits, Grey Mist very iffy with just a few tench caught and sadly a couple more of the old carp being found dead in the margins.

Decent numbers of good roach being caught on waggler and red maggot or caster from Wide Hole, the Mersey fishing it's socks off on Sunday only to be in a dire mood for our young anglers on Monday nights match/coaching session.

Incidentally thank you to the `Mersey regulars' who turned out to chaperone and coach the junior members on the river.

Best of luck to our senior team competing in the Angling Trust Div 1National Championships on the river Trent this Saturday sorry got it wrong last week!

10th August  2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The final match in the Woodshaw series for our young members was held last week, this annual series run by our local water management team who  provided prizes for all taking part and a barbeque for competitors and their families after to wind up proceedings.

The new John Mark Cullen Memorial Shield was presented for the first time to the overall winner of the series Shaun Gaskell. Thanks must go to all involved.

Also in Wigan please be aware on Sunday the Haig Aspull & Blackrod Agricultural show will be held on the windmill field near D&C waters so they will not be accessible to fish next weekend.

Mark and Rob Burdock found Cicely Mill pool on form last  Tuesday Rob fishing waggler and maggot had a roach a chuck including a few decent ones from the off and a couple of nice bonus bream. Mike on the next peg fishing feeder with worm on the hook got the crucian carps attention, included in his catch eight or nine around the 2lb mark.

River catches have  improved dramatically the Mersey match on Sunday saw most anglers having good nets of dace, perch and roach with winner Lennie Dutton `gob smacked' when he pulled his net out and saw the 8lb or so he had estimated was in fact over 14lb of small fish!

I had a trip out to the Dee last Tuesday with committee member Dean Barlow, a born and bred `Trentman,' Dean who like me would probably put rivers as his first love had never fished the Dee. He was impressed with the beauty of the area and the river as much as the quality of the fishing and his catch a stunning net of over sixteen pound of pristine dace, chub to 1lb and some beautiful grayling around the 1.5lb mark with a better one lost at the net as well as twenty salmon parr and some trout all on stick float and bronze maggot. Yours truly had a nice day but the best catch was certainly Deans.

Chester tackle dealer Wendy Locker reported the Dee at Almere Ferry was also fishing well, her partner and lifelong Dee angler Simon Loyley had his first ever barbel there last week and will undoubtedly be back after its bigger brothers!

Best of luck to our senior team competing in the Angling Trust Div 1National Championships on the river Trent this Saturday

3rd August  2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The rivers are still very much a lottery some members finding them just spot on and having good catches while others blank.

The Mersey match on Sunday was like two separate events with all the weights coming from above the suspension bridge whereas below everybody was struggling for bites. My first outing for ages and no prizes for guessing where I drew, although with a dozen fish it could have been worse, whereas in contrast our venerable chairman Chris Grehan came second in the match from a nice end peg.

Paul Edwards paid a visit to the Ribble at Hurst Green on Friday tackling the walk early to be settled on his chosen swim before sunrise, brolly up kettle on he settled down to a nice cuppa before starting to fish. Later while watching a mink on a nearby log he almost missed his first bite which turned out to be the first of a brace of 4.5lb chub these were followed by three barbel weighing in at 6lb 3oz, 8lb12oz and 9lb 4oz respectively. The method hair rigged halibut pellet on a size 12 hook with PVA bags of pellets for loose feed or swim feeder filled with crushed boillie and brown crumb.

Ron Williams reported mixed fortunes for members on the Dane member George Lally hit it just right last Wednesday when he had several nice chub to 4.5lb and some bits while members over the weekend found the river running high and fast with only a few dace and odd small trout for their trouble.  Ron also reported two broods of kingfishers on the stretch which is always good to see though he got a shock when he came face to face with a huge stag which calmly turned on its heel and ran across the river and into the woods.

The canal fisheries are still providing decent sport although the roach have been spawning late or for a second time in some areas; anglers on Mondays match were dismayed to see some of their roach were rough and bloody underneath however EA fisheries officers attended and confirmed it to be due to cleaning off after spawning and no cause for alarm. This could explain the low numbers of roach in the Manchester open match catches on Sunday too where perch, decent tench and skimmers made up the bulk of catches on punch, caster.
