27th July 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The ` dynamic duo' Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham have been on their travels again this week and with some excellent results. Their first report was from Worthington lakes where the best method on the day was waggler and feeding caster or maggot which produced good mixed bags including quality perch to just over 1.5lb.

Sunday saw the pair at another of their favourite venues, Association owned  Widehole at Poynton. Surprise, surprise, no poles here, traditional skills only with waggler and caster/maggot being the method of choice for bream to 2.5lb and roach around 8ozs . Highly recommended for a visit.

Local water bailiff Mike Burdock had a day off from pruning and strimming at Widehole and found Cecily Mill pool in good form and despite getting a good soaking he caught lots of bream and tench to 2lb plus three beautiful pristine crucians the best was 2lb all caught on good old worm.  Neil Sutherland also enjoyed some good sport there and was delighted to include a 17lb lovely common in his catch. The carp took his prawn bait during what Neil describes as a horrendous downpour! It feels like summer has deserted us already but it seems to be suiting the fish!

The Mersey is still fishing well as the Sunday match proved twelve anglers who weighed caught over 54lb between them and good mixed bags were the order of the day on pole tactics.  The river also provided good sport for our junior match squad on Monday when they had the chance to fish the river thanks to our coaching team and local members who gave the m one to one tuition.

Veteran Stan Charnock managed to wrestle a tricky 2lb 5 eel into the net during Mondays D&o60's match at London Bridge but the next two he had beat him.

National fishing month is now in full swing with organised coaching events all around the country. The aim is to introduce newcomers of all ages to angling it is an ideal opportunity to try angling and would be especially useful parents or Grandparents who don't fish themselves but have a youngster who is keen to try. See www.nationalfishingmonth.co.uk for events in your area.

Please continue sending in your catch reports as they are valuable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

20th July 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It may have been seventeen years since Rob Fellows last went fishing but catching up on past memories and back on the re-vamped Ackers Pit he has definitely not lost his touch. He has updated his tackle somewhat but fishing a waggler and loose-feeding maggot he had a roach every cast. This fishery is not yet back to its former stock levels but is still worth a visit. As to the future it really is looking good with massive shoals of fry everywhere.

You cannot keep a secret forever in angling circles and the latest tit-bit filtering through is that the River Mersey is producing some phenomenal catches of bream to 4lbs from our stretch behind Grey Mist Mere. I am informed that several well known carp anglers have made it their second home, must be something there that attracts them.

Jimmy Byrne showed his mastery on Sunday's rod only match on the Mersey when he put 11lbs on the scales almost trebling second placed Craig Murris on 4-14-3. Jimmy, who for the record had a second place the following day on the Bridgewater fished a quiver tip and started catching small roach eventually taking some better fish including a perch of 1-8-0.

Our Dane Bailiff Ron Williams showed he knows a thing or two about this popular river when on Sunday he spent a few hours actually fishing and had four chub to 4lbs. Obviously he first checked the licences of members Trevor Holliday who had five chub the largest an ounce under 5lbs and Keith Daintith who was also into chub on a slightly coloured river. Earlier in the week Paul Edwards moved swims several times fishing bank side eddies on a swollen river for four chub around the 3lbs mark taken on meat and pellet. He then raided natures larder for his fifth fish using a juicy black slug which was snapped up immediately it hit the water. Quite a number of small trout also showing up in catches.

One of our small bands of volunteers was out again this past weekend on this occasion at Grey Mist Mere. Whilst some of you fished and watched they completed and opened up four superb pegs. I just hope you all appreciate the dedication of these guys to their fellow anglers. As regards the fishing there is not much change, quality tench continue to come out in good numbers however the carp are not so easy, only a few upper doubles with our 'stockies' providing a some welcome runs.

13th July 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Chris Cullen's week started badly when his car exhaust broke but it definitely improved over the weekend when he caught a mirror carp weighing 28lbs from Grey Mist Mere. The fish beat his previous personal best by 6lbs. He also had one of the new commons at 10lb plus ten of the quality tench this water holds that have grown fat on the endless supply of boilies. The weekend was made even more perfect when on Saturday evening he won £100 in a local pub sweep.

Both Warrington Anglers and the Warrington Rowing Club were concerned last weekend when the River Mersey levels were down and fixtures for both already planned. However thanks to the prompt action by the Manchester Ship Canal Company everything is back to normal. The fishing is still phenomenal with an explosion of perch, dace, and skimmers featuring in most catches along with the occasional big bream. Pole or waggler methods still reign supreme over the feeder. Congratulations to Ray Bowden (the current Mersey 5 hour match record holder) who won the Challenge Shield Match on Sunday with 9-2-0.

Lots of small tench and suicidal rudd are taking any bait thrown at them on High Legh Fishery which makes it an ideal water to take beginners because they cannot fail to catch fish. John Goodlad went for the carp that you can always see cruising the surface but which frustratingly refuse most bait, however in his case he managed to snare four, the best a koi weighing 16lbs which fell for floating corn. On being hooked the fish almost circled the island but obligingly retraced its steps after a few anxious minutes.

Pleasure anglers on the Bridgewater Canal have been enjoying good catches of roach, skimmers, and bream throughout its length but the match weights have been really low for this time of the year. Our junior members fishing at Preston Brook recorded the best weights, beating the more experienced senior members in their matches on other lengths. Mind you they are receiving top tuition from our coaches.

£500 of BAIT-TECH bait up for grabs in a great competition exclusive to Facebook fans called 'The Name Game.' For further information check out BAIT-TECH's group page on Facebook.

6th July 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Hay on Wye stretch has been producing some cracking barbel according to my friend and previous owner of the fishery, Alan Bashford. So far this season he has heard of a 14lbs fish with a fair number over 10lbs. Alan's best fish since opening day is just over 10lbs but he reckons that he lost a really huge one on Saturday which took 50 yards of line on its first run, unfortunately just as he started to gain some line the hook pulled out. This Association owned stretch also holds quality chub, pike, roach, and big dace, plus of course salmon trout, and shad.

The carp at Grey Mist Mere are keeping their heads down with bailiff and regular Steve Kemble only managing two of our recently stocked mirrors over the weekend. However it is a different tale for the resident tench stocks as they have really got their heads down on the feed.  Lots of fish between 4 and 6lbs.

I paid a brief visit to Statham Pool on Tuesday to find the water level way down from the almost unfishable flooded winter conditions. There were fish topping everywhere and father and son duo Phil and Rick Chung were making the most of the bonanza with a fish every cast. Both were fishing the pole, Phil on bread punch and his son using pellet saw them catching skimmers, roach, and hybrids, with the best taken by Rick, a hybrid of 2lbs.

Our Wide Hole at Poynton is producing some decent catches of bream, on Sunday Ian Roberts from Salford had 25lbs during his visit and also reports landing a 17.5lbs carp on his 2.5lbs line in a previous bream session two weeks previous. Worth a visit.

Paul Edwards reports that although the River Dane at Holmes Chapel was running low and clear last week his evening visit was definitely worthwhile. Spotting chub under an overhanging willow he was soon into a fish which almost snatched the rod from his hands, the result a chub weighing 4-14-0. He had already baited a second swim and was immediately smashed by a sizeable barbel, one of a brace which along with large chub were feeding on his bait. He ended his evening with seven chub and the memory of a lost barbel battle.

Our junior squad groundbait sponsors are offering all anglers a chance to bag a net full of their products with £500 of BAIT-TECH bait up for grabs. They have a great competition exclusive to Facebook fans called 'The Name Game.' For further information check out BAIT-TECH's group page on Facebook.
