28th April, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Worthington Lakes are really fishing well for roach, bream, and carp with Bernie Shorrocks reporting a catch of 14 bream to 4lbs plus roach taken on a small groundbait feeder and red maggot.

Rixton Claypits provided a good session for Andy Craddock who had an all roach catch estimated between 30 and 40lbs. The successful method was loose-fed caster using a small waggler. Good tench and skimmer bream catches also reported. We are currently looking at re-organising and rebuilding pegs on this venue so any ideas and volunteers would be welcome.

Cicily Mill Pool is bang on form and despite some members complaining in the winter of the fishery being devoid of fish Mike Thornbury caught tench and bream steadily all day on his visit last week. Bob Brander similarly had a good catch but was surprised when a 9lbs pike took a fancy to his luncheon meat.

The Macclesfield Canal produced some good results in the pairs event this past week with the winner Paul Murrin sticking it out on worm for an all perch catch of 9-12-1 with fish to 2lbs.  Doug Derbyshire and Roy Brown walked the team event with an impressive 5 points. Jeff Shaw was one of only a few anglers to target roach and put a magnificent net of fish between 2-3ozs on the scales for 6-14-0 and was way off the money. Still there was some compensation as with his team mate Bob Campbell they were the second placed pair with 8 points.

The Welsh Canoe Union is trying to gain unlimited access to all rivers in Wales and is using the same arguments as their British counterparts in that the government advised negotiations for voluntary access agreements have failed. I find this a bizarre sweeping statement because considering all the river fishing rights that we own in Wales and England I have never in all my years as secretary received a single request from either organisation. It goes without saying that for negotiations to be unsatisfactory they must in the first instance have been initiated.

However what I have witnessed is the arrogant disregard by canoeists of our lawfully obtained riparian rights. As both an angler and a canoeist I have no sympathy, for their plight is no different than that of an angler or angling club.  Quite simply in the first instance anglers must purchase an Environment Agency license and only then start the negotiation process to seek permission to fish. This can be by way of paying a day ticket, fishery rental, or outright purchase for the right to access the river to fish. Why should they have it for free?

If members feel as strongly about this issue as myself I would urge them to go on the Welsh Assembly website and using fishery postcodes contained in our map book find the relevant Welsh member to address your comments. Please email me copies. Best of luck.

21st April, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Wilson reports a good net of roach from Worthington Lakes where he legered double maggot using a ground bait feeder to catch 29 fish from 6ozs to 1lb. In addition he had a perch of 2-10-0 and two bream. But 10year old Luke Banks stole the show when on Monday he landed a stunning common carp weighing in at 18-4-0.

Martin Iredale gave the re-vamped Fosters Pool complex his seal of approval when on Sunday he fished 'D' pool, not only was he impressed with the transformation brought about by the hard work of our dedicated local volunteers, but the fishing wasn't too bad either. Using waggler and corn tactics he had a common of 8lbs, 12 smaller mirror and common carp, rudd, and roach.

Cicily Mill Pool has switched on after an unusually slow start with members reporting good catches of tench, bream, and quality crucian carp. John Sumner alternated double maggot and corn for a mixed catch of roach, bream, and tench estimated at over 30lbs.

Carp are starting to feed again at Grey Mist Mere with a few mid-twenties coming out over this past week. Tench to over 6lbs and quality roach have been reported by match anglers taken mainly on caster and pellet.

The roach at Appleton Reservoir have been conspicuous by their absence this past week and our match on Sunday was a pathetic affair which resulted in only a few fish being caught. I know that the fishery has been blighted by cormorants proof of which is evident from slashed and damaged fish. On Monday I went on a fish spotting mission and did not see a single fish until I came to the conservation area where there were thousands in vast shoals under the trees, obviously they were taking refuge from their attackers. Let's hope following the European decision on these pests that something sensible is soon resolved.

A number of poachers' lines have been found on our fisheries so I would ask members to be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious including vehicle numbers to the Environment Agency/Police immediately. Also please let me know so that our head bailiff can take action. These lines are cruel affairs consisting of large baited treble hooks pegged to the bank. In two recent instances at different venues dogs have become entangled resulting in considerable pain and suffering.

As announced at our AGM we have now launched an experimental single fishery license to cover solely the Bridgewater Canal from Broadheath to the A580 at Leigh including the Kraft Arm. As we do not issue day tickets the idea is to give local anglers, especially youngsters legitimate access to our fishery for a modest payment with the hope in mind that they ultimately join as full members.

14th April, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Possibly due to the temporary Moore Quarry closure Sandiway Lakes have been busier than ever over the Bank Holiday weekend. The small lake has shown the best form with catches of quality bream, tench, and recently stocked carp which are packing on weight. Reports of a bream in the 14lbs bracket but no further details as yet.

Predictably Grey Mist Mere has also seen plenty of anglers on the banks with good numbers of carp and especially tench reported. Mike Johnson had a decent session catching three carp and a tench. The carp were mirrors of 21-8-0 and 15lbs, a leather of 20lbs.

Last Wednesday took us a step nearer to opening Ackers Pits when I joined the Environment Agency's dedicated seven member team who had planned the enormous task of planting up of the fishery with aquatic plants.  They even supplied the plants and clad in chest waders and life jackets it was no time at all before they were in the water planting furiously. All I can say on behalf of our members is a big thank you because without them we would still be thinking about the job.

As regards Moore Quarry we are still closely monitoring the situation of a number of fish affected by a light fungal growth and if all continues as at present with them apparently improving it could be re-opened soon.  There has certainly been an increase in members out fish spotting on this water who have been rewarded with viewing specimens not normally so easily seen. On the closure issue I must stress that fish welfare in Warrington Anglers will always take precedence over anglers sport.

Johnsons Pool has been producing chub and small carp to .75lb to pole and loose-fed maggots.  Anglers fishing from the newly constructed comfortable pegs have voted it a hit thanks to all the hard work put in by the 'Wigan Team'.

On the Fosters Pool complex anglers on 'C' have been catching lots of small roach whilst next door on 'D' plenty of small carp and dozens of suicidal roach with Ian Hannay reporting an average of 4 per minute in one hectic spell. I predict that these popular fisheries will vastly improve with more bait going in.

Lots of small tench and rudd feeding at High Legh Fisheries along with ghost carp to mid-double figures.

7th April, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

New member Barry Peers on his first visit to Warrington Anglers fisheries was well impressed with his catch of skimmers and tench from Rixton Claypits. Barry pole fished double red maggot over small balls of groundbait at 11 metres to catch steadily throughout his session. His light match gear approach paid dividends when other anglers were just catching the odd fish but the tench really stretched his 4's elastic to its absolute limits.

The large lake at Sandiway produced two of our Fish of the Month entries, one a tench of 7-10-0 caught by John Spencer and a bream of 13-8-0 caught by Dawn Preston. The bream won the day and comes with an interesting tale, not only did it beat husband Marks PB by 3lbs, but the bait came from Aldi priced at 2.99 a bag! The honey flavoured boilies scoffed at before the session by carp purist Mark, to quote, "They'll never work on Sandiway" were soon to become the must have bait. Somewhat gutted and with deathly silent buzzers he swallowed his pride and decided to 'lend' a boilie resulting in a tench of 6lbs; the 'loan' of another saw a similar sized tinca come to the net. He was feeling decidedly smaller than a boilie at this point with Dawn's sniggers adding to the indignity. Well done Dawn and you can feel even more superior when you collect your prize of £100 of assorted bait sponsored by Bait-Tech plus a Korda carp care kit.

Several reports from members of fish sighted with fungus at Moore Quarry were immediately passed on the Environment Agency who visited the fishery. The matter is being monitored daily and as fish welfare is of paramount importance until the situation improves the fishery is closed as a purely precautionary measure. On Tuesday I watched three groups of fish avidly feeding including affected fish so it could be a temporary winter/spring syndrome, who knows.

The recent stocking of our Wigan fisheries has certainly injected extra zest into the resident stocks as catches have improved dramatically at Fosters Pools and Woodshaw Reservoir. No reports as yet from Johnsons Pool.

Phoenix Park Lake is starting to produce a few tench and carp with local rod Darren Rananouski reporting catching a common weighing in at 19-8-0 using Mainline pulse dumbbells.

Carp and tench are starting to feed again at Grey Mist Mere with a few decent fish coming out over this past weekend.
