29th December 2008 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Mersey Fur & Feather was as usual a sell out; on the day not necessarily due to the 'fantastic fishing' as bites were thin on the ground, but more due to the efforts of Cheshire Angling in sourcing prizes aided by a cash injection from WAA. The match went without a hitch the problem was that somebody forgot to tell the fish how the game should be played and Stu Hardman only needed 1-15-0 to win. Mersey devotee Gary Mannion  was runner up with 1-6-0. Thanks to Stockton Heath British Legion for looking after us and to all those that helped to make the day a success.

Mersey Match organiser Bob Campbell takes his fishing seriously borne out by the fact that whilst the vast majority of anglers were tucking into our traditional Christmas Day turkey he spent his day at Appleton Reservoir. It's not really as sad as it looks because his wife was working and they actually had their nosh later, but fishing on the sandbank he caught 10lbs of plump winter roach on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Bob was out the next day as organiser of the Mersey Boxing Day match, but unfortunately failed to make the frame, or to quote him 'from hero to zero'. The match was won by our friendly postie Bob Clough who was recovering from a dicky back after coming second in an argument with his own Christmas tree. On an out of sorts river his 3-1-8 of feeder caught roach did the trick. Runner up was Lenny Dutton with 2-5-4.

Top honours in the pairs match where one angler fishes the Mersey and partner the Bridgewater was won by the Andy Lewis and Ian Morrison duo with 5 points. Runners up were Ross Whiteman and Chris Parker on 6 points. Top individual was Dave Brooks with a canal  catch of 7-3-0. Best result on the river was just over 4lbs.

If you fancy a hangover cure Bob Cambell has organised a member only New Years Day match on the Mersey. Draw 9am Victoria Park.

Headquarters at 52 Parker Street is open as usual on Friday 2nd January, 2009 for new memberships, subscriptions, night permits etc. Any catch reports can be either emailed to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or you can telephone me on 01928 716238.

16th December Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The regular Mersey series was disrupted this week by floodwater which covered the pegs and was quickly switched to Appleton Reservoir. Andy Caddock took first spot fishing a maggot feeder to put 9lbs of plump roach on the scales. Trailing by just over 3lbs was second placed Martin Lenihan with 5-13-12. For the record anglers averaged 3lbs per man which considering the colder weather isn't too bad at all. Catches are the very reason that the 'Res' is proving popular as a reserve Mersey venue and I really cannot understand why more members don't visit the fishery.

Our internet members forum is proving popular with lots of new applicants registering, we even have had one angler from America trying to muscle in with a joey membership number. Well, after our experience with idiots using our last open forum he had no chance. Now members can freely exchange information and ideas about what our sport is about, simply fishing.

Anybody out there struggling to think of a suitable Christmas present could do far worse than snap up one of our memberships which are a bargain. Join and fish now and pay nothing until February 2010.

Tickets are now on sale at Cheshire Angling for our popular members only pairs match fished on Sunday 28th December. One angler fishes on the Mersey and the other on the Bridgewater Canal.

The unpredictable weather will throw up some surprise results.

The Disabled & Over 60's matches have now been suspended until in the New Year. Watch this space for the new dates.

Finally I would like to wish all the readers and members a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

9th December   Warrington Guardian Notes

The river Mersey has been producing double figure nets of prime roach all last week but conditions for Sundays match were absolutely dreadful.  The extra snow water in the river made fishing difficult added to that the river was badly coloured and certainly carrying far more distasteful matter than just flood water. Just a few ounces was Jimmy Gannon's winning weight, afterwards he commented that it was absolutely amazing how in all those millions of gallons of water his and other anglers tiny little hooks were able to collect condoms and other unpleasant items.

There must have been a serious amount of untreated sewerage entering the river further upstream I guess the result of thousands of new homes being built without proper infrastructure in place and the effluent has to go somewhere unless you are fishing you probably never think about where all that stuff goes to.
It's bad enough having to remove water borne detritus like this from your gear but  spare a thought for the youngsters from the rowing club innocently enjoying their sport, sadly at least one of whom fell in and hopefully suffered no adverse effects from the polluted water.

The match would normally have been moved to Appleton Reservoir which is the back up venue unfortunately it was covered in ice so on this occasion it was not  an option.

Tickets for the pairs match on 28th will be on sale from Cheshire Angling at weekend the match will be fished on the Bridgewater and the Mersey.

The National Federation of Anglers held an EGM last Saturday to finalise the process which will see the NFA join with the NFSA, ACA, SAA and NAFAC to become the ANGLING TRUST a single recognised governing body for the whole sport of angling.  The new organisation will be far stronger than any one of its constituent parts and avoid duplication of services.

The delegates present voted overwhelmingly to wind up the NFA and go forward into the new combined organisation from January 2009.

2nd December Warrington Anglers Association Notes

The November catch of the month competition saw the committee with a difficult choice with pike, barbel, and carp catches vying for the monthly prize of over £100 worth of BaitTech products plus a Korda carp care kit. It came down in the end to a magnificent mirror carp of 26lbs 10ozs from the Trent & Mersey Canal caught on the 16th of November by John Penlington. The fact that only four years ago the fishery suffered a massive carp kill made the capture special and should help restore anglers faith that where there is one there are bound to be others.

There was no junior entry, but December is already with us and so another chance to win the cracking prizes on offer. Send those entries in, remember, you have to be in it to win it.

On the Bridgewater Canal there have been plenty of pike captures from around Kelloggs and Brooklands areas. Fish are mainly in the 6 to 12lbs range but its good sport with always the chance of a real specimen. Terry Coulson caught thirteen in a few visits spread over 10days. Roach and skimmers made up the weights in our Warrington Local League with our chairman Chris Grehan being wheeled in from his sick bed to be drawn on a nest of bream, taking his second placed 8lbs plus net in the first two hours. Bread punch or caster accounted for the best catches.

Frank Ogden decided to give our C and D complex at Wigan a try on Sunday and settled his gear on the larger D pool. Having left his bag of casters on the top of his bait fridge he was left with maggot or maggot. Undeterred he alternated between the waggler and the pole with the former bringing the best results with almost a bite every cast. He failed to connect with any of the resident carp but caught roach in the four to 7ounce range and plump perch to .75lbs.

The River Dane gave some good sport on Saturday with most anglers catches made up of grayling and a few chub. Stick float and white maggot brought the best results. According to our local bailiff Ron Williams it could really benefit from a touch of extra water as conditions are gin clear.

Don't forget tickets for our member only annual Fur & Feather match on the River Mersey are now on sale from Cheshire Angling in Thelwall Lane. Tickets are non-transferable and will only be issued on production of your current membership book.
