28th October Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The importance of complete fishery records is an accepted fact and something that your committee is always striving to achieve. It not only helps to assess stock levels but also enables us to monitor fish growth. A case in point is last weeks capture of an 18.5lbs mirror carp from Sandiway Lake by Adam Whelan. It was reported at the time 'to be a fairly old fish' but on a closer check of our records it was only stocked in May this year at exactly 16lbs, an incredible increase of 2.5lbs in five months. The photos below show Adam's capture, and the same fish on the day it was stocked. The unique scale patterns on mirror carp make them easy to identify.

For the record a further 25 carp were introduced to the small lake on Friday last, 24 commons and 1 mirror, all in the 6 to 8lbs range. As a point of interest they originate from the Leney strain the same as the original Redesmere fish.

We also stocked 300 small tench in the 6 to 8inch bracket into Ackers Pit where hopefully they will add to the variety of sport in this small fishery when it is eventually reopened. Their introduction certainly generated local interest, especially amongst non-anglers, some of whom were children who I would think may possibly be members of the future. Who knows? More stocking will take place presently of roach, rudd, cruciens, perch, and gudgeon.

Despite the fact that rain stopped play on our rivers last week, members who were booked on the Mersey match on Sunday were not complaining when their event was flooded out and transferred to Appleton Reservoir. Thirteen anglers decided to make the crossover and were rewarded with a total weight of 184lbs using a variety of methods. Winner Martin Griffiths used an 8 metre whip to hand for a net of plump roach for 25-6-0, whereas Neil Buist was runner up with 18-5-0 caught on the feeder. The word is that some members would prefer the Mersey to be in flood every week.

A new mid-week member only Mersey match series starts today, run by Harry Morris the draw is 10am near the garages at Kingsway Bridge. Please respect local residents and park sensibly.

Talking to our local River Wye bailiff he reckons that the fishing this year has been better than ever with good catches of barbel to over 12lbs, along with some cracking chub. Anglers targeting the roach and dace have also not been disappointed with the additional excitement of larger species latching on to their bait and really putting their light tackle to the test.

The Bridgewater Canal is providing some pike action with good numbers of fish in the 8 to 10lbs range, but some larger fish have been hooked and lost. One worrying incident is that two anglers, probably not members and poaching, have been reported trolling behind a dingy using an electric outboard motor. Any information please contact me or the police immediately.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

21st October Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

There has been plenty of good sport for our members around the waters for those who target carp particularly. Adam Whelan has been putting some time in on small Sandiway recently in the hope of catching some of the elusive resident carp.

On Saturday his perseverance paid off and he landed a stunning mirror which weighed in at 18lb 8oz the successful tactics were a snowman rig with a size six wide gape hook and a 2.5oz lead presented to a drop off in to the depths of the lake at 80yards, Adam spoded a kilo of boilies into chosen area.

His resulting catch was a fairly old fish and possibly one of the original `test' stocking the NRA did in the 1970/80s there have already been fish to 25lb  that we know of from this original batch so potentially there are still bigger fish which haven't been caught. Adam has sent us some photos to enter his catch in the October Catch of the month the pics will be on the web site shortly.

Member Bernard Anderson had a good catch on Grey Mist recently while doing a feature which will be in the `Crafty Carper' magazine soon. Bernard applied to the Committee for special permission to do a two night session in order to be sure of getting some pics for the feature.

The residents of the `Mist' obliged he landed nine carp in the first twenty four hours which took the pressure off for the next day!  The first mirror of 21lb arrived within minutes of his first cast in and a 26lb followed soon after. The biggest weighed in at 27lb and the smallest 16lb. Bernard used a helicopter rig with new Nash bait which he is `field testing'

Bernard also had a good day on the river Dane last week when he went stalking and lost count of the chub to 5lb he had just on worm. Ron the bailiff reported lots of members down last weekend

Most catching grayling and chub to 4lb.James Clayton had 15 really nice grayling on maggot and his father had nine which bodes well for winter sport on this lovely little river.

Ernie Hutchinson was dismayed when he visited Cicely mill pool and found a large number of cormorants still feeding. The good news is that finally this Europe wide problem is being addressed and this species which was mistakenly added to the protected birds list is now set to be taken off as it would appear good sense has finally prevailed.

The lack of fish at sea through over fishing which has driven this marine species inland for easy pickings, should never have been allowed to continue for so long. It is shameful that this very efficient predator has been left virtually unmanaged to caused huge damage to inland fish stocks and native inland species through depriving them of their food, mainly because the `powers that be' in Europe have taken so long to rectify what was in fact a slip of the pen!

The cormorant through no fault of its own has become a fishery manager's nightmare simply because it has been pushed out of its proper environment by man kinds greedy over use of marine resources.

14th October Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Bridgewater canal between Edge Lane and Brooklands Bridge at Sale which previously was not covered by our license has now been added and completes the stretch from Preston Brook right through to Morley's Bridge Leigh (A580 road bridge).

The two mile stretch is now open for members to fish and match bookings are being taken.

As on the rest of the Bridgewater canal `members only' is the rule, bailiffs will be giving the area extra attention. The only exception is pre arranged match bookings where non members may be included on payment of a day guest member's fee.

Last weekend the river Dane gave a good indication of potential grayling sport this coming winter although quiet earlier in the week the river hit form when there were a few anglers there to enjoy it. Best catch of grayling fell to Ray Newton who had nineteen all around the 1lb mark trotting maggot. Paul Edwards on the same method had 5 chub to 4.5lb Nigel Anthony had nine chub to 4lb plus grayling on small pellets.

The Mersey was on good form for the Sunday match too, when 19 anglers put 85lb of fish on the scales only eight members out of the 27 who drew tipped back and didn't bother to weigh in.

For members enjoying tackling the Worthington Lakes at Standish a bit of good news this week in that  the use of ground bait in feeders is now allowed. This should make connecting with the large bream shoals a much better prospect.

Although Ackers pit is looking great and the paths and outfall are completed please note it is not open for fishing yet. More tree work and construction of pegs is due to begin, any members willing to volunteer to lend a hand will be most welcome. If you are interested in being involved please get in touch. Stocking will be continuing gradually throughout the winter when the right fish become available cruciens, roach, rudd and tench are all on the wish list. We will be adding some tench which I have just ordered in the next few weeks….they are coming from `down south' and are health checked fish straight from the fish farm…. expensive but we want good healthy stock for Ackers.

We could have moved tench from some of our other waters but in order to do so and comply with Environment Agency rules we would need to kill a sample batch of fish for health checking because Ackers Pit has an outflow into another watercourse. For this reason alone it is imperative that the fish are from an impeccable source with minimal chance of spreading any new disease or parasite for the future wellbeing the fishery.

7th October Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The river Mersey was in flood on Sunday so match organiser Bob Campbell took the decision

on safety grounds to use the reserve venue of Appleton reservoir. The result was a very productive match with good nets of quality roach taken on feeder and either single or double maggot. Alan Faulkner was almost 6lbs clear of runner-up Jimmy Byrne with an impressive weight of 17-2-5.

Our junior members swept the board in the September Bait Tech catch of the month competition the main prize of over £100 value has been won by 16 years old Dom Radley with a stunning 10lb 3oz tench caught from Grey mist. The olive green beauty fell for a tiger nut flavoured boilie topped with sweetcorn and hit the bait only seconds after it had reached the bottom. It beats his previous personal best by over 4lbs and the picture will be on our web site shortly.

The £50 value junior prize goes to newly joined member Edward Parr for his 15lb 4oz mirror also from Grey Mist Mere. This was a short lived personnel best as a 16lb mirror followed in the same session. Edward submitted the 15lb 4oz fish because he judged it to be a more attractive fish albeit slightly smaller. Both anglers also receive a Korda Carp care kit to enable them to apply treatment if required to any of their future captures.

Thanks to all those who submitted their pictures and don't forget keep those entries coming in for the October competition. You've got to be in it to win it!

Good news from our growing on pool is that all species are thriving, especially the carp which are the protegeny of Horseshoe Lake fish. They are now well past the pastie size but it will be a few years until they will be ready for stocking into our other fisheries. Hopefully we will be taking out some of the tench and roach which have thrived on their high protein diet for introduction to Ackers Pit. The whole project is a joint partnership with Ineos Chlor.

Prior to this past weeks monsoon conditions some quality chub and barbel have been showing on our Association owned stretch of the Ribble. Brian Percival had a personal best chub of 5-8-7 and barbel to just over 9lbs. I have had a few reports lately of anglers encroaching on others swims, either by wading or in the case of coarse anglers simply setting up too close.
