25th September 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th September 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Friday at Statham Pool Neil Plunkett faced gale force winds with tremendous gusts blowing branches off the trees, torrential rain showers, and then thunder and lighting to add a bit of drama. Following a lunch time start he caught four quality bream and three carp before beating a hasty retreat homewards during a lull in the weather. In spite of his damaged brolley and being rather wet he still commented, "What a great local venue." He also managed to fit in a trip to the Mount for the first time in ages last week  and in addition to a couple of nice low double figure carp he caught some cracking roach to well over 1lb on the slider float tactics.  Both venues worth a visit.

Mike Pritchard took his grandaughter four years old Amelia Rose-Lily Davies on the River Mersey on Saturday and fishing a whip and maggots she had caught two perch and seven roach even before he had set-up! Then her interest centred on attracting the ducks which were more than gratefull for the fed maggots. As for Mike during the short visit  he managed twenty roach, perch, and a couple of chub on waggler and maggot and caster.

Richie Baldwin enjoyed a session on the River Wyre a week ago where he fished two lines, one on the lead across the river and the other testing out his new 16ft float rod trotting a stick down the same swim. He caught chub on both methods and lost two good fish on the leger rod, the first one took off like a rocket towards Fleetwood!

Steve Alcock has highlighted that many of the pegs previously available to members on our stretch of the River Dane at Holmes Chapel are now virtually unfishable due to fallen trees and branches. He has kindly offered to take part in working parties so anyone who likewise values this gem of a river and would like to help please get in touch with me either by phone or email including your phone number and hopefully we can get the job sorted.

Our Saturday Mersey Match Series fished at the Kingsway Allotments stretch saw Derek Bibby continue his form from previous week to put an impressive net of nine bream to 5lbs together with ten eels on the scales for a weight of 40-13-0 which gave him a 30lbs plus buffer. He caught them allegedly on groundbait feeder and maggot. Neil Davies took second place with two bream to 4lbs plus roach taken on both pole and feeder tactics.

The Sunday Mersey Championship drawn at Victoria Park saw Derek Bibby clock up his fifth consecutive win on the river with a lower weight than the previous day of 14-2-0. He caught a bream of 3lbs plus roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place with 11-7-0 of roach and perch taken groundbait feeder and maggot.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton saw Jimmy Byrne with a winning weight of 7-4-8. He had a roach and perch catch taken on pole and maggot. Derek Bibby took second place with 5-10-7.

18th September 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our bailiff Andrew Hewson doesn't mind sharing information on his catches with fellow members. He reports a catch from his session on large Sandiway last week of three tench to 11-4-0, four bream with the best a real specimen at 16-9-0, and one carp 24lbs.

Two cracking mirror carp were caught at Moore Quarry on Monday this week weighing in at 28-4-0 and 32-6-0. Notably a hard carp water so a session to savoir, but for whatever reason members overlook the quality roach, tench, bream, perch, and pike in the fishery and set in scenic surroundings a few miles out of Warrington.

Lucas Procec not only carries out valuable voluntary work on our Phoenix Park fishery but finds time for a spot of fishing occasionally. He reports during a recent morning session he managed to bag a bream of 9lbs, five tench in the 4-5 pound range, and three carp just over 10 pound each. Great fishing and a just reward.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif The lilies at Grey Mist Mere were treated this week and thankfully the weather was in our favour giving the plants time to absorb the herbicide. Fingers crossed. We will be taking off the seed bulbs early next week to help prevent further spread. Whilst at the fishery I witnessed the mess left by a fly-tipper with a key, as presumably the gate would have been locked. We cleaned up a full tipper load the following day and there is still more to remove. As a consequence, from now on members musk keep both barriers closed at all times.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifOur Saturday Mersey Match Series fished at the Kingsway Allotments stretch saw Derek Bibby again put another winning net of roach and perch on the scales for a weight of 15-7-0. He caught all his fish using pole and maggot tactics. Match organiser Ray Boden also held on again to second place fishing the same method for 13-10-0.

The Sunday Mersey Series drawn again at Mersey Walk brought saw Derek Bibby clock up yet another win with a superb weight of 21-3-0 of roach, perch, and hybrids taken on pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place with 17-15-0 of roach and skimmers taken groundbait feeder and maggot.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge where Pip Woodier won with a weight of 4-9-4. He had a roach and perch catch alternating between maggot and caster. In what was a very close match Ron Durr took second place with 4-4-2. Nineteen fished.

11th September 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Reports are filtering through from anglers' visits to Cicily Mill Pool since its recent reopening following a mainly bream fish kill due to the hot weather and low water conditions that combined to cause the oxygen levels to drop. Thankfully tench, crucians, and skimmers have been feeding with roach providing a bite every cast on maggot. Ted Small fished Cicely on Tuesday morning and had roach after roach around 3-6 ounces all morning, some skimmers/hybrids up to 12ounces, plus one big crucian not far off 2lbs. He started on maggot but caught a good number of his fish on corn.

I have however heard a disturbing rumour that the large common was caught during the closure; if so and details materialize I can predict the result!  There was an expected absence of the larger bream which were quite old fish and will be difficult to replace.

Graham Briggs enjoyed his session at Appleton Reservoir when after setting his stall out for roach with a groundbait feeder and maggot his first two fish were tench around 3.5lbs apiece and he lost the next fish. Then after beefing up his hook-length the tench vanished and chunky roach moved in on his feed. Graham reckoned that he ended up with a weight around twenty to thirty pounds.

Members have quite rightfully pointed out the problem of lilies growing on several of our fisheries, notable Grey Mist Mere. We carried out a spray treatment on this water last year and have already arranged for repeats. The problem is that it is a slow process as the only herbicide now legally available is not as successful as that used previously but now banned by a Brussels edict. Removal by dredging is not an option due to the discarded rusting tar barrels that are in various places on the bed. Any member out there who is licenced for aquatic weed treatment?

He caught all his fish using pole and maggot tactics. Match organiser Ray Boden was in second place fishing the same method for 11-11-0.

The Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Mersey Walk brought out the big guns, no other than Ant Higham, AKA 'The King of the River' who fished on the tip and groundbait feeder for a winning weight of bream and skimmers for 16-5-0. Ray Boden was again in second place with 13-14-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick where Jimmy Byrne won with a weight of 5-4-4. He had an all roach catch made up of small fish. It was the same for second placed angler Graham Belton with 3-12-12.

4th September 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th September 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Martin Harrison has shared the results of his five visits to the River Alyn this current season where fishing the fly in a variety of water conditions, but mainly low levels due to reportedly the hottest summer on record, he enjoyed sport with a mix of species. They were made up of eighteen grayling, ten brown trout, and four chub. Angling is more than just catching fish and the surroundings play a great part, Martin saw plenty of fly life, kingfishers, herons, and a shoal of (perhaps several hundred) 2" fry in early July. Successful flies have included, Griffith's Gnat, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Klinkhammer, Pink Tag, and Hare's Ear Nymph.

Good catches of roach, skimmers, and carp reported from Statham Pool where Jeff Richards last Thursday enjoyed a brief two -hour session. It wasn't intended to be so short but after realising that he had left his bait at home he was forced to improvise by using his sandwich lunch. He caught roach on bread and two carp on a rolled-up piece of salami. As for Jeff never has crusts tasted so good!

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifOur Saturday Mersey Match Series again fished this week at Kingsway Allotments saw Dave Brooks in winning form and a buffer of over 3lbs from second placed Martin Kettle. Dave fished the pole and maggot for an all roach catch of 15-9-0. Martin, who started fishing our junior matches a good number of years ago fished the same method for a weight of 12-5-0 made up of roach and perch. It was great to see ex-English International Kevin Ashurst back in the UK again and yet again in the frame.

The Pairs Sundays match fished on Sunday on the Victoria Park stretch of the river was a much closer event catch-wise. Match organiser Ray Boden led the field with an individual weight of roach and perch plus a bonus 2lbs bream for 19-6-0 taken on his favourite method, pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with 18-3-0 and fished both pole and groundbait feeder methods. It was a lottery for the secret pairs where luck played a great part in who you drew, well, both Ray and Jimmy came out of the hat as an 'item' and were easy winners with a combined weight of 38-3-0. The pair in second place were Ade Green and Baz Chambers with 27-15-0.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. Derek Bibby repeated his win of the previous week with a weight of 4-12-2. In fact, it was the same for second placed angler Jimmy Byrne who also kept his place with 4-0-0. On a more general note this past few evenings on the canal I have spotted good numbers of fish rising in the evening, something I have not seen in any quantity this year.

For those members who have not seen the announcement on our Warrington Anglers Facebook and Home Page Cicely Mill is now open for angling. The water is back to summer levels, wildfowl are back, and on my visit last week there were fish topping everywhere. Any current information please.
